OT: Ideas for Detroit Downtown visit

Post by jlm411 » Mon Jun 10, 2019 2:34 pm

I am looking for the ideas to spend 8 hours in Detroit downtown. We live 4 hours from Detroit. I will be driving my daughter and her friends to a concert on Tuesday last week of June at Fox theater. I will be dropping them at 2:00PM and picking them at 10:00PM. I am looking for the ideas to spend about 8 hours by myself.

Is it safe to walk around Detroit downtown area during the late evening hours? People who are familiar with Detroit Downtown area, Can you please suggest some activities for me? I will be by myself(male in 40s).

If you can make it to the Ford Rouge tour over in Dearborn, the last tour leaves at 3PM. Other than that, it's a lot of time to burn in downtown Detroit. It is safe to walk around, just be mindful to not wander away from the main downtown area.
An idea may be to catch a movie and kill some time.

My wife is from Dearborn, so I'll second the Ford tour. I would highly recommend The Henry Ford Museum/Greenfield Village.

You could spend a couple hours at the Detroit Institute of Arts, until they close at 4. Too bad. (I'd drive there.)

It looks like there might be a Detroit Tigers game going on that night - right downtown. Or you could go to the Casino if that is your thing. I believe Greektown and MGM Grand are pretty close/downtown.

May be an hour drive, walk around and have dinner or go across to Birch Run Outlet mall if that interests you

When you/they are at the Fox theatre, remember to pay your respects to the late Mr. Chris Cornell, who passed after his final show there 2 years ago.

Check out Windsor, Ontario which is just across the river. Just be sure to bring your passport with you.

You can leave your car in a garage in downtown Detroit (there's probably one not far from the Fox Theater) and take the Tunnel Bus which loops through both downtowns. It runs every half hour until about 9:30pm, then hourly until about midnight.

If you like Motown music, check out the Museum on West Grand Blvd after you drop em off... Pretty cool...

Or the Detroit Institute of Arts is nice...

After that, if you like cars, the GM HQ has a nice display in the bottom of the RenCen... Watering holes abound...

Greektown Casino is a good place to spend some time...

Then hit the Elwood for a beer.... The Fox is a walk from there....

Detroit is like any other city when it comes to safety...

Just my $0.02....

Check out the lobby of the Guardian Building if you are walking around downtown. One of the most artistic art deco interiors in the world.

Get the Park Detroit app and load it in your phone. Parking is $1/hour on the street. Downtown is very safe in the core area these days. Preload your license plate and credit card before you get there. Two hour limit per spot. But new session can be started on app. Parking enforcement does not appear to be tracking whether you move you car, but they do track expiration times closely.
