How much do you donate?

Post by Roarindino » Sun May 05, 2019 5:52 pm

What percent of your paycheck do you donate every month (or year)? I’m going part time at work and am tempted to decrease our budget for charity.

The amount I donate is the same as a percent of my paycheck and as a percent of my TNW.

50% of MY take home income (part of a dual income family).

Have been doing this for 9 years (up from 25%, which I started 15 years ago). Use appreciated assets to donate.

Best decision made.

Depending on my performance bonus, 10-12%. I’ve been fortunate and hope to help others.

About 25% + 7.65% + 6.75%

I’d say that’s about enough donations

I do not have a fixed amount of money set aside to give to other people, that would indicate that I have over-worked.
But I give money to people in need, including some of my relatives, quite often, when I see the need.

I donate when someone I care about is raising money for a good cause. For example, if one of my friends starts a Doctors without Borders fundraiser on Facebook, I'll donate $50 or so.

This ends up being a very small % of my income.

Basically about 10%. It might be a little higher/lower but that's the neighborhood. This is after tax.

Some years it's quite a bit more, but it goes to DAF and that years contributions might be dispersed in future years

Why would you want to base what you give on what others give? Their priorities, goals, etc. are likely very different from your own. How much other people voluntarily spend on X should have no bearing on what you choose spend in that area.

Give what you believe you should.

Historically I have not donated, or donated only rarely. I'm planning to start donating 10%, beginning with the bonus I received last week.

I'm using Charity Navigator to select charities based on their efficiency and transparency (and mission, of course). Seems like the best way to avoid giving to a scam or just enriching some non-profit CEO.

Giving / donations is usually very subjective to your 'perspective - of wealth / how much is just enough'.

I've just tried to always donate more than I spend on myself. (I drive a 40 yr old car, by choice, so I can give more to others. )

Wish I could donate 90% and live on 10%, but I was an hourly night shift factory worker, single income family, farming by day (expensive hobby) so "Micro bucks" budget / std of living. NEVER saw wage income over 80K (that was with a LOT of overtime!!! 50%)

Donated all my bonuses (for 32 yrs employment) to unsuspecting neighbors with financial or material needs (Firewood / heat bill, car...)

Set up a DAF while on our 30's to 'fund' charities to perpetuity. Was a good tax planning tool, should cover all our charity needs (at inflation adjusted peak amounts) during next 50 yrs of retirement. Then our estate goes to DAF. Kids will be managing the DAF gifting instead of getting an inheritance. They are doing fine.

Some large charities CEOs make so much money it makes my donation money look like an atom. I mostly donate to small local charities like animal shelters where I know the money is used well.

I take a little different approach. I base my donations on my spend. 15% of spend is allocated to charitable contributions. For example, if I buy a $42.5k car, I will donate $7.5k.

I give 5-8 percent of my income -- will be able to do more as I get my financial house in order over time.

I'm a fundraiser for charities and want to thank you all for your decisions to give!

I've raised more than 100M for charities and still am astounded at the generosity of the American people. Our country, time after time, tops the list of generous nations.

Just 3%, but I hope to increase it in time. Since I'm not maxing out my tax-deferred account, I have some conflicted feelings about giving even that much -- I'd be happier if I could afford to give 10%.

We are probably only around 1% or a little less. But I was out of work a few years back for almost 3 full years so we're still recovering and catching back up. Would like to get up to about 3% over the next 5 years.

It varies, usually 2%, but up to 10% some years. But I believe my greatest donation is the time and expertise I give, which is substantial.

I consider the ~36% of my gross income that is paid in taxes (federal/fica/property tax/sales tax/local levies/etc) to be more than enough of a donation.

About 6-7% a year, that we keep track of.

Goes to scholarships at the local university, for 2 freshman coming from out of the area or even out of state, that wish to study environmental and physical sciences. If they stay for the following years and maintain academic eligibility they receive a somewhat smaller grant. Essentially providing the opportunity for 4 years of assistance.

3% of gross income but 50% of the unearned gain on our condo sold in DC.

Bought for $330k in 2012 and sold for $485k in 2018. We maybe put $15k in to upgrades. We moved back to the midwest but are donating $10-20k a year to DC charities for the next few years.

I feel like I should donate all of the gain. Its bizarre to me that if you are rich enough to take out a bunch of debt you can essentially be paid $20k a year to live somewhere. But if you're just slightly not rich enough (or your parents aren't rich enough to give you $) you have to pay $20k+ a year to live in the same building that I do.

10% of gross wages, including bonuses, is automatically moved to a separate account on payday which I use for charitable giving. I've been doing this since 2001.

Definitely no less the amount I would spend for myself on clothing, shopping, discretionary expenses, etc.

More important question is donate to whom.

I donate what I believe is appropriate to a good cause when I see one come my way. Some years these causes come more than once a year other times not as often. I will likely be starting a DAF soon so that it becomes easier to donate appreciated shares.

DAF's are indeed a screaming deal.

I regularly donate appreciated shares from my taxable account into the DAF, and then replenish my taxable account with money from my dedicated charitable giving account I described a few posts above. Tax on the donated shares' capital gains is then (legally) washed away.

Gotta love fungibility! :beer
