FreeTaxUSA website down

Post by ThriftyPhD » Mon Apr 15, 2019 7:39 pm

When you try to login:
Site Maintenance

We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience. FreeTaxUSA is currently undergoing scheduled maintenance and upgrades to provide superior service and usability.

FreeTaxUSA will return shortly.

Thank you for your patience.
Others reported being kicked out as they filed. Yikes.

Yet another reason to do this earlier.

Same. I had it done, but wanted to look it over in detail before submitting and give myself time to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything.

I used them yesterday, up the whole time.

I'm shocked people would wait til Monday and not the weekend before, but I guess everyone's on today, crashing it. Dear lord lol.

With their promo it was only $13.50 all in, not a bad deal.

Credit Karma is completely free - and completely awesome.
Used it last year and this, very pleased.

I recall how much was due, so I just did a free extension thru TurboTax and paid my estimated bill to the IRS to avoid penalties. The site FreeTaxUSA site is still down.

I'd use another service but all my depreciable assets are already loaded in freetaxusa.

If someone happens to be affected by this, do an extension payment if you expect to owe, or file an extension with no payment if not. Also, LOL, do your tax return or at least file an extension sooner.

I tried using Credit Karma two years ago, and it had errors on my return. I couldn't file with it. Of course, last year I tried to use FreeTaxUSA and I found it had calculation errors, confirmed by their customer support. Oh well, FreeTaxUSA did work for me this year.

I couldn't get my CK results to match HRB and Freetax - not even close. There was one omission I noticed - I think it said "taxable amount not determined" was not implemented when I tried to input a 1099. I didn't pursue it and probably could have gotten it to work eventually.

It does not import my scandalous number of 1099-Bs. That's an important feature to me. I usually get TurboTax free from Fidelity.

Do they import investment data yet or do you still have to do it manually? Free with imported investment data is the Holy Grail...

Might be the support people are in India and they blew their no change blackout date time instruction.

2:30 EDT 4/15 = mid-night 4/16 India time.

When my company started using Indian IT Services, this happened several times. The solution: we stateside people enlarged the blackout period sent to India by one additional day.

I had to enter it manually - but I didn't have that much to enter.
I find their modern no-nonsense interface very refreshing though.
They make the whole affair seem like it's not a big deal - and in our case, it really isn't.
But yes, those that have more complicated situations may find they still lack some of the features of the more mature providers.
I wouldn't automatically assume that being the case though.

Yep. I was on the final page when it crashed again at ~10.

I jumped to a different tax software, finished my federal and was about to start on State when FreeTaxUSA came back online and I was able to submit around 11. I saw on facebook/twitter that it went back down not long after I submitted.

It seems like tax software would be a case study in the 'bursty' demand model for a website. I just assumed they would use something like AWS which would provide unlimited demand. And it's not like they're streaming video or hosting big downloads. It's a text entry form... I'm surprised this would be an issue in 2019.

I don't think it was actual Scheduled Maintenance. I think that is their default "We're down" page. Their claim was unexpected demand.
