How many companies have you worked for?

Post by BradJ » Tue Mar 12, 2019 7:16 pm

I’m 34, currently working for my second company (10 years at the first, going on 3 at my current)and currently mulling making another move. I actually don’t like moving around, but my current company has a rather slow culture and I’m looking for a more fast paced environment. Out of curiosity, how many companies have you worked for?

I've just worked for two in my 30 year career as a teacher. Perhaps three, if you count the company my wife and I started on the side...

Over 11 years have increased total comp from $75k to $250k. Job hopping pays off!

37 and I'm on my fourth "real job". Between ages 15-29 I worked at probably two dozen different companies as I put myself through school. 4th year with my current employer and I fully intend to retire from here.

Started Post college life with J C Penney's in 1978. (Many pre and college era jobs). Switched to Mega corp in 1979 and worked there 33 years. In retirement I've worked for 2 real estate companies.

In 10 years since graduating with first degree - 5

In 4,5 years since second degree - technically 3. One was six months. Was too boring.

Second degree is completely unrelated from first so really the only data points meaningful are the ones post secobd degree. Fully anticipate I'm not done yet

5 up to the end of first college degree
4 as a technician
2 including co-op during Bachelors
10 Masters onward
21 total not counting work/study, temporary jobs while in college, or running my own businesses

I'm 62.

I’m 35, on job #5.

To maximize comp in big companies, you have to switch jobs every few years.

5th company since age 15, now 37. Been a contractor for the last two corps, so the jobs themselves have been pretty varied.

I'd like to make it to 10 years somewhere, but that's fairly uncommon (and some argue means the company is taking advantage of you - like trustquestioner says).

I'm 44, and on job #8 post-college (#1 and #4 were with the same company, #2 lasted 3 months).

Changing jobs is often the best way to boost both your career and your income.

For those who have had multiple jobs before 40, have you ever left a good paying, safe job for another opportunity that was riskier?

Does it count if you stay at the same desk and they keep changing the name on the door?

If not 8, if it does about 17, depending on how you count names that only existed while I was on vacation , and temporary names during mergers.

Age 55, 4 companies.

Every company I have ever worked for experienced either a merger or was sold while I was there.

Six. I started at the last one 31 years ago. The last three companies were in the same sphere of business.

Young folks - get those *paid* internships and relevant work experience when you are in college. It helps you focus, know your own likes and dislikes, and results in a better match when you finally go look for that perfect job. I've worked with people right out of college who have never worked and their usual problem is that they don't know how to work.

The least stressful of the six jobs was long ago: being a janitor in a phone company building. Such good people - the employees never made a mess. I came in after hours and was mostly by myself. Swept the floors, dusted, sanitized the phones, did minimal bathroom cleaning, and marveled at the equipment in the subbasements. Emptied a lot of trashcans with pizza boxes one week when the President came through town (they were from his communications team). Saw the box that the Presidential Seal is kept in. It has its own box, a very sturdy one.

I'm 51. 24 different companies. Sometimes as an employee sometimes as a contractor. I found it was the best way to increase my salary.

Started current job after a short Navy stint. I am still with it after almost 49 years. I did retire 17 years ago, but continue working part-time, and love it. Work in IT.

Congratulations.

I actually believe I work with some people who have had exactly your experience. One in particular started right out of college as a front line Sales Dev Rep, cold-calling prospects. 5 years later he's the Chief of Staff to the Head of Sales, and the company stock is now 8x what it was when he started.

A lot....earlier in my career I switched more (sometimes to advance, and sometimes to because a contract I was on switched hands).

I am about to start with my 15th company in 24 years of work experience (starting with a new company/job on March 25th).

Age 29. One company, 10 years. Started at 44k, now making 127k. No college degree (working on fixing that, as I do realize how incredibly lucky I have been).

I'm 51, on my 7th job (more if you count being acquired as a new job). I've joined risky opportunities each time (software startups). Of the 6 previous jobs, 3 basically ended in liquidations. I left a Fortune 1000 company three of those times to join the startup.

It helps that my first two jobs ended up in successful outcomes. I'm sure I would have been more risk averse with a different start to my career. For me, the return compensated for the risk and I never really had to struggle financially. On the other hand, I never thought that I couldn't get a good-paying safe job if I really wanted to, so I feel like I had a safety net.

Long retired. Three after college, but one of them twice.

edit: OOPS, male that four. I forgot EDS. But I only was with them eleven years, so how could I be expected to remember that?

5 jobs, 29 years old.
I worked the same job during college for 4.5 years. I include that one because it was a real job and I could have continued to work there after graduating. I'm on my 4th job after graduating.

I'll be 58 in a couple of months. I've worked for 9 companies since college. This includes working for one company twice. It's not atypical in my industry and the need to change jobs wasn't always voluntary.

I retired at age 66 having worked for 4 organizations: 13, 1, 5, 27 years respectively. That was a different time. It probably would be more in today's work environment. BTW, I have a great pension from the last job of 27 years.

5 since I graduated from college (currently age 45) and I've been with my current employer for over 12 years now. On a side note, I've also been in same home for over 12 years now.
