1040x - fixing wrong ssn for 4 years

Post by michaeljc70 » Fri Feb 22, 2019 1:26 pm

To make a long story short, I have to fix my spouse's ssn on our 2015, 2016, 2017 and 2018 (just efiled them before catching this) taxes. Unfortunately, with efiling and stuff carrying over in the tax software, this went unnoticed. Surprisingly, by the IRS also. Anyway, my question is, do I have to fill out the numbers on the 1040x (lines 1-22)? My understanding is that if none of them are changing, I don't. I want to verify that though so I don't have to fix this fix.

I essentially just changed my spouse's ssn and noted that in the explanation section in Part III. I will obviously be filing 4 1040xs. Is there a problem mailing them together? Seems like it makes sense to me.

I've sent in the 1040x's for the Federal. Now I am working on the state. It isn't clear to me if I need to wait for the Feds to accept my amended return before filing the state 1040x. That section of the return (Illinois) looks like this:

For the first option, the instructions say:
"federal changes that resulted in a tax increase is the date you filed
your federal Form 1040X and paid the tax due. Failure to provide
this date could result in an assessment of a late-payment penalty."

Changing the SSN doesn't result in any change in taxes owed. Can I just make it a "state change"? Or do I need to wait for the Federal amended return to be accepted and include that?
