SSA Do-over; form 521

Post by SHU76 »

My wife applied for her SS benefit this past April. We've submitted form 521 in early November to stop benefits and repay them. Our situation has changed and she will defer until her FRA. Question - We've called the SSA phone number and were advised that they haven't "scanned" the form into the system yet (it's 12/10). We mailed the form (return receipt) and know they've rec'd the form. So......if they don't process the form until 2019 we'll have to pay income taxes on the benefits she received in 2018. Once the dust settles in 2019 and we return the funds she was paid in 2018 can we deduct that income from our taxes in 2019?
