Perhaps because Veteran's day actually was on Sunday, even though it's observed today? Of maybe that applies to the bond market. I read something like that over the weekend.

It’s always open on Veteran’s Day and will be in 2019 and 2020 also. Banks are closed but not the stock exchange.

Years ago when the nation switched many holidays to Monday (Washington's Birthday, Lincoln's Birthday - those now combined to Presidents Day, and I think maybe another), there was a big complaint by veterans who did not want to change Veteran's Day from Nov. 11th. (That used to be Armistice Day). So now most folks observe it on the real date, and if needed, some agencies who would not otherwise observe it all, observe that Monday. Bit of a muddle.

This isn't quite true.

The NYSE closed on Veteran's Day in 1918 and again on 1921.

From 1922-1933 it didn't close but observed a 2 minute trading halt.

From 1934-1953 it closed.

From 1954-2006 it didn't close but observed a 2 minute trading halt.

So dm200's question turns out to actually be a two-part question:

Why did the NYSE stop closing in 1954? And why did it stop the 2 minute trading halt in 2007?

1954 was when "Armistice Day" was expanded and renamed to "Veteran's Day". But why did that change cause the NYSE to stop observing it?

And what happened after 2006?

It's so that bears can do their clawing.

You sure did your research! In any case, it hasn’t closed in recent years.

NYSE, and in consequence all US-based exchanges, operate on 11 November. Also on the 12th. For their own reasons.

"The" stock market, if we're speaking globally, given the wide range of weekend customs and the curvature of the earth never closes. In maintaining financial services industry systems it's never Sunday. It isn't even ever midnight anymore.

You propose we run it 24-7?

Well, CME SP500 E-mini futures trade nearly 23 hours per day, from Sunday night till Friday afternoon.
