Amazon says TurboTax 2018 will be released November 12

Just checking on Amazon I see that they say that TurboTax 2018 will be released on November 12. CDs are available for pre-order now. I imagine that the downloaded version will be available on or about November 12.

In case anybody is wondering, H&R Block 2018 will also be available on November 12. You can preorder now but the rate is full price.

I would not be surprised if many forms are not included in the beginning. Even in a "normal" year there are missing forms.

As always, check the calculations in the early releases. One year, our "professional" software used for TaxAide had a missing link between Schedule D and the 1040. Schedule D worked fine but the final result never went anywhere.

I am going to be interested to see how they handle the QBI calculations for the deduction for businesses and individual REITS.

The download versions seem to be available (although Deluxe is not available on Mac, it is on PC)

Amazon's version has 5% refund bonus on the Amazon gift card. Last year, the price was $19.99 on Black Friday for the deluxe version.

last year used home & business - tempted this year to just get deluxe. Receive income from S corp main job both W2 and K-1, also income via distribution from a partnership, small sole proprietorship (with a solo 401k). But most deductible expenses are handled on the S corp 1120S (which I don't complete) so personal taxes aren't all that complicated. Deluxe enough for me?

Yes, the deluxe version will handle all that, no need for home&business.

If you want to prepare the 1120s and K-1 you'll need the business version (not home&business) but it sounds like you have that covered.

I purchased and it's obvious the software is in the early stages. Error right away, can't connect to the Update site. Home deductions section (mortgage, property taxes) not yet open. Nothing at all about the §199A QBI deduction.

Intuit automatically charges my credit card each year for the home/small business edition. I received an email last week that stated:

"You should get delivery of your software on or before November 21, 2018. Thanks for being a valued member of TurboTax Advantage—we appreciate your business and look forward to serving you again."

They charged a few days ago and the download link isn't working yet. I never have received a physical media for the software, so I'm assuming the 11/21 date is when the download link will become available.

They've charged you before the product is released. Okay. Are you getting a discount, at least?

I pre-ordered a download last month. My CC was charged yesterday. When I log on to my Intuit account it says downloads will be available on the 7th (yesterday). I called Intuit and they said they were having problems making the downloads available. So, I guess I'll wait. Obviously, some forms will not be available, so I'm not expecting a finished product. For example, last year the education forms weren't even in the software until early January.

Not sure what's going on with Amazon right now. I pre-ordered Macintosh Home & Business a week ago. I was charged a few days ago with the email saying it would be available on the release date (which when I ordered was stated as 11/12) - I thought pre-orders won't supposed to be charged until the ship or release date. As of today, that product says "Available Now" with the "You can access this item in Your Software Library" note but it's not in my Software Library. I'll give them until Monday (since that was their stated release date) and then follow-up with them.

I really want it sooner rather than later so I can do some year-end planning related to IRA conversions.

I normally wait for a discount but wanted to pre-check some new (to me) tax situations. Yesterday I successfully downloaded Turbotax '18 Deluxe from Amazon and did a workup on my federal taxes for the year. Some extended/unplanned time off work had forced me to deplete my emergency fund and a chunk of my 401k.

To counteract, I set my withholding to zero when I went back to work mid year. I have several dependents. Happy to be not owing anything and actually receiving a small refund.

Amazon has complaints that the Deluxe including State isn't actually including State and wants you to pay again for the state. Anybody had any experience? I want to do some end-of-year Roth planning as well.

this is very helpful to know. so many changes in the new tax law, nice to be able to get a sense of the impact while there is still time left in 2018 to make some year end tax moves possibly.

cheers,

TurboTax was available on Intuit's website earlier this week. I downloaded the Premiere version and it works fine, although several of the feeder forms are not updated (like the HSA forms, for example). Still, it's pretty valuable in planning and has already made a significant difference in our withholding for the rest of the year.

From reading the threads, it seems the offer does not show up at the same time for everybody.

I usually get mine in late January. I looked at my downloaded files, and see that I downloaded last year's version on Jan 25.
I keep a pretty close eye out for it, so it was probably first made available to me on or near that date.

I do recall some people mentioning on the thread that they had received it about a week prior to that.

I use H&R Block's software on a Mac, and the 2018 version was available and I downloaded it last night. I think all the forms I need are there. I'm sure Intuit won't be far behind.

Looks like Amazon has cleared all questions and reviews. A review I saw earlier is now gone and all TT 2018 products have no reviews or questions.

Yes - me! I bought the Deluxe plus one free state and free federal efile for five submissions download version from Amazon for $59.99, compared to $69.99 at TurboTax's web site. When I installed it a TurboTax window said I would need to buy my state version separately for $39.99. Amazon refunded my purchase price and now I am waiting to see when the "real" product will be available at Amazon. I note another post said this product was greatly discounted last year on Black Friday. I have entered a price watch in Camel3.

I wanted to buy it early to get a better handle on my withholding.

Update: I ended up buying the Premier version and state seems to be included okay. However, it was pending for a while before Amazon let me download it, and the 200+ MB update took about 10 times as long as it should have to download.

Update to update: Nope, state not included; it says my state will be available mid-December.

Does the H&R B software include a "what if" worksheet? Turbo Tax includes it and it's great for doing many what if scenarios for 2019.

What corresponds to Turbo Tax Basic and to Turbo Tax Deluxe.

Thanks

In view of other comments, I ended up contacting Amazon this morning and they allegedly cancelled the order for me without explanation as to why it says Available but it's not. Once I see confirmation of the cancel and see that people have been able to download it, I'll re-order.

Yes, I thought I had this problem as well. This morning I called TurboTax support. I learned that if you go ahead and choose to "purchase" the State, you will see a price of $0. So, yes, you do get a free State download.

But, I'm ready to send TurboTax a bill for the frustration it caused. :annoyed

It's annoying that they changed the interface with nothing up front to let you know.

Seems like a lot has gone wrong with the roll-out this year. As I mentioned earlier, my Amazon pre-order was charged but not fulfilled. I did re-purchase it yesterday and all seemed to go properly other than the usual start of season bugs. One of my reasons for wanting it early was to play with Schedule C and the QBI deduction. My first attempt has shown it's not automatically creating the needed QBI worksheets but if you manually open them (search for all forms with QBI in their name), it works.

I can't imagine buying TurboTax before 2 things happen.

First, all the people on the bleeding edge need to buy it, complain about what it does or doesn't do, and document for me how Deluxe, while claimed to not meet anyone's needs, in fact is fine as it always is.

Second, price drop to $39.99 plus tax. :D

I see no reason to pay more or buy sooner (usually sometime in January) because you can't file before brokerage forms come in mid-February anyway.

Lots of folk want to have the software by early December so they can use it to play what-if games with their year-end investments, medical costs, and tax payments. I have found that tax preparation software is never working properly until January, so you need to find a different way to play what-if games. In an ideal world, final versions of tax preparation software would be ready in September, and users could fine tune their financial lives long before the tax year ends. I doubt that will ever happen.

While there are always things waiting to be finalized into January and sometimes even February, I still find the early versions useful for planning. I can do a lot of it manually but some of the phaseouts can be tricky to do manually. This year, I wanted to see how the QBI deduction worked and make sure it wouldn't have any unexpected interactions with self-employed insurance deduction or solo 401k deduction.

But, I've found that sometimes these early versions leave "crud" in your data file that you can never get out (resulting in TT showing a warning or error you can not clear). So I do a draft return for planning and then start over from scratch in January or February once the software is close to final (I don't think it's final until 10/15 - just this past summer I opened TT2017 to check something only to have it download an update).

It probably gets easier for me next year when my wife turns 63 (I'm slightly younger) and we'll want to avoid going over the $170,000 IRMAA limit. That's a much simpler manual calculation than I'm working against this year.

Is it always this way? This is the first year I've purchased and tried to use Turbotax to help with end of year optimization. But so far finding the product frustrating. Obviously lots of tax changes 2017 vs 2018. Complexities with the QBI deduction. I get that all that may not be "ready to go." But even something like the adjustment for the significant changes in the child tax credit changes seem not yet updated in the 2018 product.

Yes, it's always this way. But this year probably worse than usual due to all the changes.

I noticed it still has the 2017 HSA limit so my play numbers I've thrown at it with a max. family contribution is triggering a $150 over contribution. But it will get there - it always does.

Speaking of Mac, supposedly the 2018 versions of Turbotax need an upgrade to Sierra. But I've found it seems to run fine on ElCapitan. So far, at least. Turbotax support's answer is predictably CYA ("maybe it's working for you, but we can't guarantee that it will continue to" and the like).

Downloaded my TT yesterday. I always buy it early so I can play around with the numbers and do the appropriate Roth conversions at the end of December. The main thing that I've noticed (about my tax situation) that is not ready is the $500 "other dependent credit". Oh, that and the education credits - but those are always well into January.

I've got to tell you - I just love the simplified taxes this year! Not! Page 1 will indeed fit on a postcard (front and back) - it's just all of the other new schedules you have to fill out now. [OT comment removed by admin LadyGeek]

Today is Nov 15th. Can I buy Turbotax Premier from direct from Intuit, online/download, and also can I buy what I need to do a Trust tax return Form 1041? I tried to play with what I think is the Intuit site and it's just not clear.

I was looking at the Fidelity ‘discount’ page, not the not-yet-available free offer, and saw that I could “start now” and not pay until I file. Does this mean I can do all the analysis now on TurboTax and just wait to file until I have the free software later?

Queue the thread about free copy from Fidelity :happy
I am waiting for that as well. Do you know when Fidelity has traditionally announced the availability?

Jut bought and downloaded Turbotax Premier $45 price deal online, found it on a web search. Expect a lot of TT upgrades before final filing.

I did a search and found a place selling Premier online for $45, a good deal, too good actually for initial rollout. On their website Massachusetts was spelled Massachusett, that made me pause. Doing a little research the address given is a single family home in Ma. and the BBB has alerts on it. The red flags were there so needless to say, I didn't order from them. I'm just saying , be cautious.

I am almost certain that when it says start now and pay when you file, it's for the online version. And with the online version, I don't believe you can see forms until you pay. All you'd be seeing is their summaries, etc.

I've never used the online version - being able to see forms as I work is important since that lets me catch a lot of mistakes (both my own and things that are missing or incomplete in the software). Plus lets me do a lot more fine-tuned what-if planning.

I put the TurboTax Premier PC download in my Amazon cart yesterday along with TurboTax Business download, intending to buy them later. This morning the TurboTax Business price had gone down from $149.99 to $119.99, and the Premier download was "currently unavailable", although the disk version was. I downloaded TT Business with no issues. But that's weird, why would they take down the download versions of Basic, Deluxe and Premier? :confused

I bought Home & Business Macintosh Download earlier this week. Amazon now has CD unavailable with no price and downloads not even offered.

The only thing I see as available are the federal only products (no included state). I wonder if the complaints of the Fed+State version telling you you need to purchase a state (although if you continue, you find the purchase price of the first is $0.00) led Amazon to pull it because they're as confused as the customers.

Building on what I posted above, Intuit really blew it by changing the interface for downloading your included State without providing any advance hint that the first state purchase price is $0.00 (a simple "your first state is included" on the screen that says you need to purchase the state would be a big help).

I got a camelcamelcamel alert today showing that TurboTax Deluxe 2018 Fed Efile PC/Mac CD version was on sale for $39.99, $10 off list.
