^^^ Clicking on the "Can I still claim these expenses?" link under the entries will explain exactly that.

This is my first year using H&R Block. Does anyone else think the H&R Block forms are hard to read? (My glasses prescription is up to date.) The forms font seems to be smaller than TaxAct or TurboTax forms. With several schedules attached to the 1040, mini-worksheets interspersed, some text in italics and some not, cells in grayscale; it’s hard to keep track of which schedule I'm on. For other tax software, I've spent most of my time on the forms, entering and editing there. HRB forms are not as accessible it seems.

I use Control+ to increase the text size in the interview, but this does not increase the size of the font on the forms. I found the Cleartype tool which helps increase the contrast, but it needs to be reset each time I open it up. I’d like to scale up the forms to 150% like I can do in my word processor. "Scaling" changes it some, but not nearly enough. Has anyone found "zoom" for the forms?

With Windows 10, you can use the magnifier, which I think is one of the accessibility tools. I just typed "magnifier" in the "type here to search" box, then clicked on the magnifier app that came up as the search result. Works great.

It defaults to 300%, full screen view, but these are easily modified. I kind of like 200%, lens view. I hadn't thought about using this till seeing your post, but I've now pinned it to my taskbar, as I think I'll find it useful.

Window Key and Plus will start the magnifier
Window Esc will stop the magnifier
Ctrl-Alt R will allow resizing the lens using the mouse

Pinning to the taskbar is a useful tip; I hadn't thought of that and will probably do it because I don't always remember the shortcuts.

There's no excuse not to have a zoom function in the HR Block app, though. Major nuisance.

Thanks for tips. Motivated me to look at the settings too. Changed the zoom increment from 100% to 25% for finer resolution of zooming.

Also, Windows key and + or - zooms in our out once magnifier is running.

Thank you Kevin M for the Magnifier suggestion and MisterMaster for the fine tuning tips. I got Magnifier running and docked on my toolbar. I am still trying to figure out if this helps much because the scrollbar often seems less agile than without magnification. The magnifier makes the text less crisp, despite my having asked it to “smooth out the edges”. Magnifying 25% is too much. It seems like the text font size is about 10 or 10.5 on HRB, whereas TaxAct’s 2017 font size on forms was bigger, at least 11, if not 12.

I did look back at TaxAct’s forms from my 2017 software. They are much easier on the eyes. They have a faint gray vertical bar separating the left-hand text from the right-hand data column. HRB’s grayscale cells are so dark that the contrast of the text appearing on top of the gray cells is not sharp enough. When I adjust brightness control, it also makes the white areas brighter which also strains the eyes. I think I will contact HRB and ask them to please make the gray cells lighter with their next update.

TaxAct changed the visual appearance for 2018, but I’m not sure if they changed forms because the free online version doesn’t display any forms. At any rate, I wasn’t going to pay twice the price for TaxAct’s self-employed download version versus the self-employed online version. TaxAct does not include Schedule C at any of the lower price points, only at the highest price point.

In praise of HRB, Schedule C is included at every price point. This is appreciated since SE income for us doesn’t clear $200 annually any more, yet Schedule C is required even for small amounts. At least with HRB, the cost to file Schedule C doesn't eat up our profit.

Good eyes. The price varies by product. For example, the "Deluxe + state" version is $22.49.

I just received an email "All tax forms are now final":
All forms are now final!

This includes the form for the qualified business income deduction. If you were waiting on this form, you can now finish and e-file.

29.95 is not bad but I'll wait until BF again. Who knows it could be $18 again. Sure won't need it before then.

My email said $25 off Deluxe + State, $29.95. Weird that they send different ones to different people.

What ‘version’ of H&R Block and TurboTax is needed to accommodate rental income (Schedule E) and investments/capital losses (Schedule D / Form 8949)?

All versions of H&R Block (including Basic) have had all forms and schedules in previous years. I use this site every year to check:
https://www.hrblock.com/tax-software/up ... lable.html

TurboTax in previous years has locked some of their forms/schedules inside higher-cost products, but it appears they've gotten away from that as long as you're not using their "Free Edition."
https://turbotax.intuit.com/personal-taxes/irs-forms/

Both products will upsell you with promises of "advanced guidance," but if you generally know what you are filing, any version of H&R Block will work.

There's also a newer thread for this tax year's release.

EDIT: One potential reason to upgrade: I have personally found value in the DeductionPro product for valuation of goods for charitable donation (H&R Block Deluxe and higher).

Just to avoid confusion since this was a 2018 thread. Let’s move this discussion to a 2019 thread.
