Compliments for Vanguard?

Post by celia » Sat Jun 23, 2018 11:53 pm

There have been several threads recently complaining about Vanguard. I agree with someone who recently commented in an ongoing “complaint” thread that maybe it’s time to say what we like about them instead. So here is the “compliments” thread.

...you don't know how many people have had good experiences with Vanguard because the few complainers drown out those who've had positive experiences (or those who have good experiences don't comment, but those who have bad experiences do)...so it may appear to be a worse problem than in reality simply because of an availability heuristic.....
I'll start:

I have called them several times this year about upgrading my accounts. I understand that accounts held by trusts can be harder to upgrade because of the legal paperwork required by trusts. But they patiently walked me through the various forms, linked to our checking accounts again, and transferred the assets from the old to the new accounts all while merging the correct mutual fund and brokerage accounts on the old platform.

After reading a recent thread, I was worried about my old accounts disappearing before I had time to back up the history of my accounts. (The history of assets you no longer own at time of transfer does not carry over, but I want to save that on my own.) They re-assured me that the old accounts won’t be purged for at least 12 months, but you can delete them yourself, if you want.

At the end of the last call I had about upgrading accounts, I ended up asking how Vanguard was doing over-all on the upgrades. Were 90% of the accounts upgraded yet? Was there a point where everyone would be forced to move? The agent responded that about half of the customers still have at least one account on the old platform. And “No”, there will never be point when you are forced to move. As time goes on, new accounts will only be on the new platform while accounts will close on the old when customers die and their beneficiaries move the assets to new accounts.

Not only did I like all the answers, but the agents were accommodating and would go find an answer for me if they didn’t know it. (Of course, I tend to call after the markets are closed so things don’t seem so rushed. I assume they have fewer calls then.)

What good experience have you had?

Did a rollover to Vanguard this past year. All went well. Outgoing custodian insisted on sending me the check, but Vanguard sent me a FedEx label to forward the check to them. Couldn't have gone more smoothly.

Things went similarly smoothly a few years ago when I moved some stock over from a DRIP. That required some fussing with a signature guarantee, but no hassle.

So no gripes here. Perfectly satisfied.

I'm a little embarrassed to say I'm a new Vanguard customer - it's a move I should have made long ago.
Compliments:
  • I'm happy with the website design - very easy to open accounts and to execute a backdoor ROTH.
  • I have called in several times and spoke to a human with little or no wait.
  • They were happy to verify funds on incoming ACH transfers so I could trade with the funds immediately, rather than having to wait several days for the funds to clear.
Only drawback: On my second transfer, the Vanguard representative assured me that I would have trading rights for the funds immediately and that no verification call with the outside bank was required. When my trade was rejected, I called back in and the verification was quickly taken care of. It was frustrating at the moment because I originally called in to make the transfer (rather than doing it online) in order to take care of the verification. The rejected trade and subsequent call to verify funds went quickly, but if the markets were moving fast, then I may have been more sensitive to the problem.

I am so completely satisfied with Vanguard, i would quit my job tomorrow and work for them if they offered me a job. I have probably called them a dozen times through the years, and i have had a couple of times where i was put on hold a little longer than it should be, but one of these times it was on a Tuesday after a three day weekend. This company has revolutionized the industry, and has put billions of dollars from fees into the pockets of individual investors.Thank you Jack Bogle and the thousands of employees who work and have worked there.

Vanguard is great for my simple setup: 2 funds in a taxable brokerage and a target fund in an IRA (401k is elsewhere). The automated investment works well and I don't have a problem with the website. Besides that they leave me alone and I leave them alone.

I’m a new Vanguard customer this year.

Everytime I call I’m amazed how fast I get to talk to an actual person! For a company this humongous the short wait times are impressive.

And the reps are very helpful and always friendly never short and uninterested and never try to sell me.

Without context any feedback, good or bad, for any company is not that useful.

A Vanguard customer with $22,000 gets different support than a Flagship customer with $2 million...

Every company has pros and cons. Reps can be good or bad. I find Vanguard's backend lacking, but my rep bulls his way through things on my behalf. This year I moved virtually all non-Vanguard holdings to Vanguard after Fidelity screwed some things up and didn't own up to it or provide timely restitution.

Having an assigned rep at Vanguard really makes a difference.

I have completed two rollovers with Vanguard and all went well and timely. In my 12 years of being a Vanguard customer I have rarely needed to talk with someone but when I do it has been handled to my satisfaction.

Vanguard's handling of my accounts has been flawless for 36 years and counting. I will be annoyed if all you johnny-come-latelys so overstress their systems that my record gets truncated.

I was very impressed with their service when it came time to roll over my wife's workplace accounts. She had 401a, 403b, Roth 403b, and 457b, all with different custodians. VG assigned a specialist to handle the transfers. She knew how to satisfy every custodians unique requirements. It all went very smoothly.

I've had my portfolio in Vanguard for almost 30 years. I've had my paycheck, and now pension check direct deposited into my Vanguard money market fund for probably twenty years. I call Vanguard a few times a year with usually simple stuff (ETF conversions). Never, not once, had a problem. They've earned my trust. No plans to go anywhere else.

No complaints here, either. A small glitch this spring was quickly taken care of and getting a human on the phone is quick and painless. I will continue being a happy customer.

Every company has its strengths and weaknesses, some being factual, some relating more to the perception of the customer. This exists in every life area, for example choices involving politics, religion, profession, etc. Vanguard is not perfect but finances definitely demand a dependable degree of honesty, disclosure, results and response to error. Vanguard does that quite well for us, though we do not have all of our assets with the company.

We have been with Vanguard for over thirty-five years, having moved our early savings from MLPFS in the late seventies when we got tired of unrequested sales pitches. We have had a variety of Vanguard reps as our account balance has increased and we have received excellent service from all of them, including from reps we reached when our regular reps were not available. Along the way our two children added their own accounts and now their spouses have also established accounts. All have benefitted from the services of our Vanguard reps as members of our "family" of accounts.

When I served as DPOA and executor for my aunt some years ago I worked with her and our Vanguard rep to consolidate all of her savings in one Vanguard account, with check writing privileges. When she died I used her account to pay all of her final expenses and then write checks to her heirs that brought her account to zero. I am now DPOA and executor for my father. Again, I have worked with him and our Vanguard rep to consolidate all of his savings in one Vanguard account.

When my wife and I set up a joint revocable trust our Vanguard rep walked us through the steps to set up the account and then bird-dogged Vanguard's process of moving our individual taxable accounts into the joint trust's account.

Over the years we have rolled over many employer retirement accounts to our Vanguard accounts and our Vanguard reps have been very helpful in coordinating our rollovers. The only major problem I ever had was caused by my employer's nationally-known custodian's failure to properly separate and identify the pre- and post-tax portions of a large rollover. Vanguard refused to un-do the rollover, despite extensive efforts by our rep to request Vanguard's IRA office to help us. Ultimately I was able to escalate my problem to the custodian's senior counsel, who directed their responsible office to make me whole.

This year I will do my first IRA RMD and QCDs, with tight timing that all needs to happen during the last few weeks of December. Our Vanguard rep has already offered to help me in detail with these transactions, bypassing Vanguard's automated RMD and QCD facilities to assure everything happens before December 31.

In total, we have received excellent support from Vanguard, in addition to benefiting from their zero account fees and very low mutual fund ERs. I also use and greatly appreciate their outside accounts facility, which lets us track our BoA, Marcus, and employer custodian balances all on one web page along with our Vanguard account balances.

I've not had any problems and the website does all I need it to do. I've never called them except for when I transferred my accounts there 10 years ago. That was before the customer service issues appeared.

I am glad to hear the wait times problem seems to be fixed. In general, it does seem the complaints have died down.

I have been a Vanguard customer for 38 years. I have made three 401k transfers. My customer service experience has been excellent. The money I saved due to Vanguard's low fees over those years has helped me to achieve a comfortable retirement. I recommend Vanguard to anyone who asks, and sometimes to those who do not ask.

I sometimes wonder if some of those who post complaints are connected to one of Vanguard's competitors. Those who have to compete with Vanguard hate its existence. Vanguard has taken a lot of money out of their pockets in two ways. One, they have lost customers to Vanguard and two, fees across the industry have decreased to compete with Vanguard.

We're longtime customers, or as Mr. Potatohead said on another thread: sycophantic devotees of the cult. :D I've never had a problem with them and have always been grateful for their low-cost leadership in the industry, as well as their stewardship of our money.

I recognize some posters have had unsatisfactory experiences and air them here, but my experiences over 20 years have been excellent.

I called them a few weeks ago for the first time regarding transferring my ComputerShare account to them. I was nervous doing so, with all the complaints on here about them and account transfers, but their customer service on the phone was very fast, and my transfer was done in less than a week, including mail time.

I must say it is really nice to see all the positive posts about Vanguard.

It seems there is a lot of bashing of VG here, and probably deserved so.

But, no firm, not Vanguard, not Schwab, not Fidelity, not TDAmeritrade, are perfect.

They all have their pluses and minuses.

I have accounts (at least for now) with all of them.

I do like the simplicity of Vanguard’s website. But, to the opposite, I wish they would modernize it.

For technology, of the ones listed, TDA is the best IMHO. But I no longer do a lot of trading to use the Think or Swim platform.

I do like Fidelity and Schwab real time chat system.

I like Fidelity’s bond platform the best.

All in all, they are ALL good firms. Which is best? Depends on what you want as an investor.

I must say that I TRUST Vanguard the most...and that is because I trust Jack Bogle the most.
His footprint, I hope, will be everlasting on VG.

Have a great week ahead,

Don

I have posted a few reviews/status of transferring Retirement accounts. Overall I have been pretty impressed with the interactions I have had. Some people review a company without having interacted with their help/support department and I don't think you can really evaluate a company unless you have dealt with that part of the company. I've used both the phone and email support systems and I really like both of them. I also have been impressed with the change to the transition system. The first few times was a little bit cumbersome but the last two shifts were all electronic and pretty easy to make it through the GUI. It is very easy to buy, sell, and exchange funds.

When i have called my wait time was probably 1-3 minutes. A few times I called during busy time and they offer the automatic call back service which is AMAZING! When they answer it is someone that speaks my language which is always a plus. They have always been either able to answer my question or get a hold of someone who could. Along with providing any links that I needed.

The email system usually gets a response within 2-4 business days and I've been pretty happy with that as well.

As far as overall value I think you would be hard to find a better company for what they provide at the cost they provide it.

Disclosure: I have only been with them around 2 months now. But I have been transitioning my retirement accounts over so therefore contacted them a LOT more then probably most long term users do.

35+ year Vanguard client, started before a web presence when Vanguard went online the only ISP that Vanguard would let you connect with was AOL.

I have nothing but praise for the company, born out by my early retirement at age 54.

Every problem has always been a transfer, and always by the firm doing the transfer.

I've been with Vanguard since 1982. There was a minor glitch more than 20 years ago that was quickly resolved. I've also provided informal "advice" to six other account holders for up to 30 years without any issues. We are pretty low maintenance folks however.

My husband's 401k is with T. Rowe Price. Without any doubt, our Vanguard website for our IRAs and taxable accounts are far superior to the T. Rowe Price website.

Also, if we learn how to navigate the Vanguard website, we can find many articles and white papers issued by Vanguard, although I'll admit they can be hard to find. They need easier access buttons or drop-down menus to find their goodies. But T. Rowe Price has a skimpy website, as though it caters to those who don't want to know much about their investments and don't want the "clutter" of information.

I've not experienced the issues others have with Vanguard customer service. I can make an appointment with my Flagship representative, and he's always timely in his calls. I can email him with questions, and receive answers in a timely manner. If he can't answer, he refers me to someone who can, and does. I've only experienced one "bad apple", and she was someone I hope I won't ever have to deal with again, and that is when my mom passed and we were having to split her accounts between her beneficiaries..if she'd worked for our business, she would have been fired.

I've been happy with Vanguard transferring our accounts from two other brokerages; I've been happy with their RMD service; I'm happy with the ease in buying, selling, exchanging funds and individual stocks (inherited) via their website.

I like Vanguard, my DH likes Vanguard, and my daughters like Vanguard. And I do recommend them to others.

I had 3 IRA accounts transferred from other mutual fund companies. The lady I worked with did all the paper work for me and stayed in contact with me the whole way until the accounts were in my Vanguard IRA brokerage account. I was very very impressed. We know Vanguard is growing rapidly and it may have been difficult for them to keep up their customer service at a high level for a while. But my experience has been very very positive. I was actually confused with the paperwork but she filled out the sections for me based on my answers to her questions. All I had to do was sign it and submit it.

Vanguard's set up facilitates simplicity. Meshes perfectly with a subtractive philosophy of effectiveness. Subtractive minimizes issues. And complaints.

I have been a Vanguard investor for around thirty years. I started with them when the company I was working for used them for their 401K. When I left I rolled my investments out of the company sponsored plan but stayed with Vanguard and opened a rollover IRA. Since then I have changed jobs 3 times and each time rolled over my 401K funds into this account. My wife has also consolidated her accounts at Vanguard and we are now both Flagship Clients. The rollover times were typically based on the company the funds were being moved from, not Vanguard. I have received a check on occasion and others were able to make the rollover electronically. Recently I opened a taxable brokerage account. This was done online in a few minutes. I also was able to connect with my bank account electronically where they debited and credit a few small transactions to verify the account. A couple days later I was able to transfer funds into the account electronically. No issues whatsoever.

I have also had Vanguard develop a financial plan for us looking at how our portfolio would hold up to our planned retirement. It was a very thorough using all our assets not just those held with Vanguard. They then used a Monte Carlo analysis to determine the probability of success with the plan over the remainder of our life expectancy. All this was at no cost and with no pressure to accept the offer to sign up for Vanguard's personal advisor service. We are in our late 50s and I am not ready to have them manage my assets but at 0.3% of assets it would be a cost effective approach as we age and are not capable of managing our investments.

No complaints. It was a vanguard rep who suggested a Roth to me when I realized my prior year ira contribution would not do me any good as a deduction. He suggested recharacterization, which I'd never heard of.

Thank you for starting this thread, Celia. I've been with Vanguard since I started my pathetic little $2K IRA 20+ years ago. Now that I'm well into Flagship territory, I've nothing to complain about. I trust V 100%. They've steered me through several botched issues (all my fault). They're always there when I need them, promptly and expertly. And to their credit, they respect my DIY desire and don't bombard me with marketing offers to sell more of their services. My rep. checks in about once a year if we've not been in touch, but doesn't try to "sell" or "upsell".

I'm simply grateful that back in my early-investing days I stumbled on Vanguard first. I'm a bit shocked at what some others on this forum have been sold by various shysters. That easily could have been me, given how clueless I was in the early days. Better to be lucky than good. Thank you, Vanguard!! :sharebeer

Edit: Another thing I appreciate about Vanguard: They treated me just as well when I had only $2K with them as they do now. I never felt like I was "less important" in the early days. Maybe that's because from a customer service standpoint, they "stay the course" too: They know that a $2K client they can persuade to stay the course will eventually become a seven-figure or more client. ; )

Thank you celia for your wonderful idea to start this thread!

Ive been a Vanguard customer for a long time and have been a happy customer overall, with no major issues. This year, I had an intricate issue (nothing panic-worthy), and their service was steadfast and kind through it all. At the end of it all, they even sent me a hand written note thanking me for my patience as they resolved the issue. I hadn’t received a hand written note in the mailbox from anyone in years!

I've been with Vanguard for over 22 years, and have had no problems with them. Of all the mutual fund firms, I trust Vanguard the most to lower costs and not raise expense ratios. They've won my trust as the firm most likely to put their customer's interests ahead of their own profits. From what I've seen and heard, they can be trusted.

Unfortunately, when I first started working at a hot tech company around 2000, I let myself get talked into splitting my money and placing a portion w/ an advisor at UBS. That was an expensive lesson, but on the other hand, I saw first hand the name dropping, ego-stroking, suave marketing, and veiled bragging hinting about what they can do for high-dollar investors, which I was not. In retrospect, I eventually reaized those hints were probably their illegal swiss-bank tax evasion scheme (https://www.reuters.com/article/us-ubs- ... CF20090812) and possibly Bernie Madoff (https://www.law360.com/articles/1011066 ... n-2nd-circ). As it was, the funds they put me into eventually got sued by investors for being such poor investments. That alone was expensive tuition.

So Vanguard hasn't screwed up for me, and I've seen nothing but integrity and an emphasis on saving customers money while providing quality investments. UBS was a bad move for me, but luckily the damage was slight, unlike some of the other advisor stories I've seen shared on this site and on other financial sites. Thank you Vanguard, and thank you Jack Bogle!

Thank you Celia for starting this thread.

We have had a Vanguard mutual fund since 2001, but we finally wised up and dumped our other mutual funds in 2011 and consolidated a lot of our accounts at Vanguard. They held our hand and made the transfer painless.

We are flagship clients, and could not be happier with the service we get. Our rep (2nd one in 7 years) follows up and makes sure everything is done to our satisfaction. We also have accounts at multiple other institutions including but not limited to Fidelity, Merrill Lynch, and Wells Fargo (for various reasons). But Vanguard is the company that I trust the most. I don’t see a real difference in the customer service level. Actually, I have to say that the Merrill Lynch reps are really savvy, but they are also savvy at pushing options to make ML money instead of me. I don’t get that from Vanguard. Their computer interface is fine for my needs, and there is always a customer service rep available to help with cleaning up the odd stock issue I inherited, or making a contribution to my kid’s ROTH, or walking me through pushing the buttons for a back door Roth. As it makes sense, I’ll be rolling Fido, ML, and other accounts to Vanguard to simplify my life. Will probably keep WF as our bricks and mortar bank.

No complaints. There are employees are human, and so not perfect, but provide consistently excellent service. Vanguard is one of the best companies I've worked with.

I have been a Vanguard customer for 38 years. ....
I am envious when I read the time people have been with VG. And a little painful.

While life is good, and I am better off than most, I can't help but think how much better off I would have been if I had discovered Vanguard & Boglehead knowledge 38 years ago. I have been with VG maybe 15 years. I guess when I think about it, the last 15 years have been the most important due to higher net worth (relative to the previous 20 years). But the 80's & 90's were a missed opportunity for me.

Having said that, nothing be good experience with VG since I joined. I still remember transferring my account from Fidelity to VG in the 2003 time frame. Vanguard & Fidelity were both on the phone with me for the transfer. The guy at Fidelity was almost begging & grovelling with me with respect to the transfer, with the VG rep listening on the phone. I was embarrassed for the guy. Best move I ever made.

Excellent service with VG, never any issue. IRA to 401k transfers and back, separate pretax and after tax contributions & earning. Roth conversions & re characterization. I don't require frequent service, but the service is a little more complicated than typical (deposit, withdrawal, buy & sell funds). Flawless so far.

I too would like to thank Celia for starting this thread. I'm finding it reassuring. I've been with Vanguard for 18-20 years now, and I've never had to contact them. My portfolio is pretty plain vanilla... it's a simple three-fund portfolio spread across an IRA, Roth IRA, and taxable account. It's really good to know that there are many Bogleheads out there who've never had customer service problems with Vanguard.

+1 on all the above.

This thread has been a real eye-opener and a pleasant one to read.
So many times people, myself included, are ready to start with the complaining when something doesn't go right.
Understand that I am not absolving VG, or any firm for that matter, when something gets screwed up.
Depending on what the circumstances are, mistakes can be very very annoying.
I thank the OP for staring this thread; and I thank all the posters for their "2-cents worth"; it has been very good to read.
Like the others above, I too wish I had discovered Vanguard and Jack Bogle a long, long time ago.
I can't undo the past, but I sure can right the ship on its current and future course.
Thank you to all the BH's; and a hearty Thank You to Vanguard and the venerable Captain of the good ship Vanguard...JACK BOGLE.

Have a great week,

Don

A poster said that there's a difference in service between the regular customer with several thousand versus the customer with several million. Not in my experience. I have always gotten through to a representative quickly; their instructions were clear and their execution prompt. When I became a Flagship customer the only differences were: 1) I was told about the portfolio review service (but by then I was satisfied with my AA); and 2) my assigned representatives have built a pleasant rapport with me.

The few complaints about Vanguard I've seen on this site over the years have mostly related to complex and esoteric transactions in which the poster thought it would be straightforward, but it wasn't. Responses to these posts often indicate that Vanguard needed to comply with certain regulations that may have been the source of the frustration. I've seen less than a handful of instances over the past decade in which the poster claimed Vanguard erred.
