FIRE book recommendation request.

Post by ofcmetz »

I'm about to take a little four day cruise out of Tampa, FL and am looking for some good books on FIRE that I can download onto my Kindle Paperwhite. I believe that FIRE is the the correct acronym for Financially Independent Retire Early. I'm a year from turning 40 and a year or so from being able to retire if I decide to do so. Please make your recommendations.

Thanks

Congratulations on considering retirement! Best thing I've ever done in my life.

In my usual fashion, I read a bunch of retirement books just before retirement. I guess they helped me psychologically prepare, but the reality is I haven't based my 3 year retirement (as of yesterday!) on any of those books. Retirement sort of took on a life of it's own and I somehow fell into a rhythm.

This stated, I found these books very useful pre-retirement:

1) What Color Is Your Parachute For Retirement?: (highly recommend! contains lots of resources and great information);
2) My Next Phase;
3) Retirement Comfort Zones;
4) The Joy Of Retirement;
5) Thinking Smarter: Seven Steps To a Fulfilling Retirement

A classic / the bible for the FIRE community seems to be Vicky Robin's "Your Money or Your Life". I have not had the time to read it, but I did read that she is working on a new updated edition. Mad Fientist had her on one of his podcasts, and she also features prominently on the cover of the most recent Money magazine (does that make her the "cover girl"?).

I would say you are better off collecting blogs and podcasts.

The new version is out. I have read the original version 1992.

OP - if you are already a boglehead and one year away from FIRE, you may already know most of what is in this (atleast the 1992 version) book. Nevertheless, it may worth reading to cover angles that you may not have spent time on before. It also helps that many other FIRE-friendly people have read this particular book - i.e. it provides a baseline of sorts for conversations.

Thanks - I looked on Amazon and only saw the 2008 version. Or what I thought was the 2008 version. Looking again, that seems to be a mistake - the title is

"Your Money or Your Life: 9 Steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence: Fully Revised and Updated for 2018 Paperback"

and shows a publication date of December 10, 2008.

Yeah - there is something funky about the title as listed on Amazon. I suspect the publishers are attempting to update the "Edition in place" so as not to split the audience among multiple versions.

He recommends just VTSAX, Vanguard Total Stock Market. I took it a step further and use VTWSX, Vanguard Total World.

If you believe in International investing just replace his recommendation of VTSAX with VTWSX.

I'd hope that the OP, a long-time BH, is already far along on the path to wealth if he's considering retiring early in a year or so ;)

So is that really the book he should be looking for? (I haven't read it, so asking for myself as well)

I was thinking the same thing.
If the OP is stating he can retire in a year if he wants he has already reached FIRE so why read about how to get to FIRE?
Perhaps more of the "I'm about to retire" variety.
