My Father passed-away mid-2017.
He received a $500 monthly Pension payment in June after his death.
I knew they would want their money back sometime.
December 19...I get the invoice...I owe $500 (fine).
I send them a check back in the mail on December 20.
The check didn't clear the bank until January 9, 2018.
The 1099-R is naturally showing the over-payment amount.
I know better than to adjust line 16 on my Dad's IRS Form 1040 for 2017 for the money I repaid.
Do I claim the $500 re-pay then as a Credit further on down the tax form?
Also...I re-paid on a joint account my Daddy & I have.
Would I claim the Credit on his taxes...or on mine?
Any input would be greatly appreciated.
