That's a legitimate concern in my local area (check the location under my avatar). :D

This "deal" has now been posted on Quicken's customer support site:
One wonders whether they've been hacked, or maybe a disgruntled former employee still had access to edit the web site.

^^^ :)

To those asking about the renewal price, my email says:
Thank you for your Quicken purchase. Your Quicken Premier has been successfully activated on 2/4/2018. You have an active membership to Quicken Premier that will renew automatically on 2/4/2023 at the then current price (plus any applicable taxes).
I have auto-renew disabled. I wonder which takes precedence?

How about free for 5 years?

This is probably an error but it works, at least currently. Note it's a ~275MB download.

Yes, it's probably a price mistake. Yes, the person in charge of pricing probably will get fired. And yes, we know you don't trust the cloud.

But for the rest of us, a nearly $60 or $70 annual purchase for five years at the price of $0 (free), the upside is pretty sunny. Didn't charge my credit card either. Use a virtual card, turn off auto-renew, yadda yadda.
Thank you!!
Worked for me, also turned off auto-renewal of subscription in 2023 on my account.
Like LadyGeek, I am a Money Dance user, but this zero-cost Quicken will serve as an insurance policy or backup in case of problems in the next 5 years.

I'm not sure why that matters. Auto-renew disabled doesn't imply auto-disconnect.

If auto-renew is disabled I'd expect them to send a notification at least a month before the subscription ends. Likewise even if auto-renew is enabled but the credit card no longer works I'd expect a notification.

Note too that with a 5-year subscription it's quite likely that the credit card you use today will have expired by 2023.

I bet come Monday they either cancel all of these orders, or shorten the subscription significantly...

Good point. That's another reason to stay with Moneydance. There's no reason change back until I know for sure what Quicken is going to do with this offer. (If I want to change back...)

Yabbut the CVV will change on renewal so auto-renew will probably fail unless you also update that.

There is essentially zero chance that Quicken will allow this. I have created two accounts and received confirmation numbers that are hundreds apart from each other in about 3 minutes. That suggests that people are creating thousands of accounts per hour and may result in serious loss of revenue to Quicken...

With the SAAS (Softwear as a service) model it is very easy for Quicken to turn this tap off once they realized the mistake was made.

So, don’t get your hopes up...

I'm betting they all get reduced to 1-year. That way they can say you have nothing to complain about because you still got something for free. Meanwhile, the execs will be doing a Snoopy dance because they will have added a few hundred thousand people to the annual subscription treadmill.

I’d buy the service of downloading the data I have to a spreadsheet, plus store all my receipts annually.

The software to manage the data doesn’t really impress me.

Agreed. That would be the most professional way to do it.
Meanwhile, the execs will be doing a Snoopy dance because they will have added a few hundred thousand people to the annual subscription treadmill.
Their owner [HIG] should be asking those execs why they didn't do that from the get-go, i.e. offer new users a free 1-year subscription. That would hook those new customers on the Quicken drug, so as to greatly increase the likelihood that they'd renew the following year.

("Drug" because once you've got a year's worth of data in the software and have become "hooked" on it, it becomes very painful to "withdraw.")

I just installed 2017 Premier very recently, to kick the subscription question can down the road, so to speak. But it seems like I should also order and download this offer (but not install it). I can't see any downside to doing so.

As others have noted, the "my account" information related to the "free" five-year subscription oddly refers to a 1-year period already.

I actually like Premier 2017 compared to 2016 (mostly just the more modern look), and so I think I'll just keep that for the time being, until I see how this 2018 issue shakes out.

The only offer I've seen previously for a Quicken 2018 subscription was for not more than 2 years, if I recall correctly. This incident was the first time I ever saw a 5 year offer. I wonder if that was posted with malice intent. If so, it may provide grounds for Quicken to reverse it somehow.

All of this is pure speculation, of course.

No software means 2 things:

1. You have no backup and will have to purchase the software if you need it.
2. The subscription may be crippled or disabled by Quicken. It might work now, but wait a day or so from them to recover from the mishap. There's $$$ involved and it will be fixed.

Being in IT, my bet is that they did what they could do on Sunday to stop the immediate problem. In the days and weeks ahead they will comb through their data to identify who obtained these subscriptions and develop some sort of plan to roll them back to one degree or another. I'd like to think that people will have their subscriptions reduced to 1-year, but then again Quicken isn't known as being particularly customer-friendly, so maybe we'll get nothing.

They may let it go...depending on how many people grabbed it and what the financial impact would be. Many Quicken customers are already unhappy with the changes. Stopping the deal (which was their mistake) wouldn't help morale with Quicken.

It had changed to $67 when I checked, but I am good until April 2020 so I didn't really need it anyway.

It may also have been an honest mistake. Somebody made a change and simply missed it when they tested the update. Or, they didn't test the update and it got out. In either case, it now has upper management attention.

If they want to keep customers happy, they'll make a small gesture of good faith and allow the subscription to continue for a short time.

If my subscription is extended for a year, I'm not switching back unless I have to. (I'm using with Moneydance.)

I suspect I am not alone in grabbing the “deal” because it was in front of my nose, but I have no concrete plan to actually use it. I haven’t used Quicken in many years. If they don’t rescind it and a rainy weekend comes along, I might give it a try to see how I like it and how much effort it would be to re-enter (or load) all my data. I doubt I would cause them a lot of cost because I tend to not use human support channels.

If they rescind it, no big loss other than 5 mins spent to generate a $1 Visa card and buying it.

I think their greatest “risk” may be annoying customers who did recently pay for it and now after the fact learn about the “deal.”

I was too late to the party but who needs it? I'm perfectly happy with my Quicken 2000 CD that I received free from Citibank in 2000. I've used it on half a dozen computers or more.

My Quicken is $0 cost every year.

I see few of you use moneydance. From their website cost is $50. Do they support automatic downloading from banks/brokerage/mutual fund firms/credit card etc? It seems quicken will become 75+ every year which is way more than I was used to paying them.

They support automatic downloading for some websites. For the rest, you have to login and manually download the Quicken QFX file. Automatic downloading works for Citicorp and Vanguard, to name a few.

The cost is $40, see my post here: Re: Is Quicken 2017 worth it? Please help Consider posting in that thread, as it's more relevant to your question.

I've heard positive reviews from others but Moneydance doesn't work for me. I use a Fidelity Investments CMA account as my primary checking account. Fidelity really isn't a bank and the routing number on checks points to UMB, NA. I imagine they subcontract that service.

Moneydance won't let me connect to my Fidelity account for online banking, as Quicken does. (At least, Quicken connects to it as an investment account but allows me to characterize cash transactions as being in a separate checking account. I don't do online billpay through Quicken.) Moneydance also doesn't seem to support online connection to investment accounts, so I can't connect to my main checking account either way. For me, that's a deal-killer. I'd like to use it but that's just too much of a disadvantage.

How to download a quicken file from Fidelity

Vanguard allowed to download portfolio and transactions in quicken.

Still working in Fidelity for the download file.

I was too late to the party but who needs it? I'm perfectly happy with my Quicken 2000 CD that I received free from Citibank in 2000. I've used it on half a dozen computers or more.

My Quicken is $0 cost every year.
Just to be clear, while you can use an older Quicken forever (my sister is using 2003), you don't get access to most of the features that drive us to Quicken--online access/downloading.

It's free forever, and doesn't meet the needs of the vast majority of us.

It should end up being around $20-$30 a year, based on discounts from Amazon and others. Not $75.

I still use Quicken Deluxe 2008, and have no plans to upgrade ever.

Am I the only one in the free world doing this?

EDIT, I see the post above me talks about a 2003 user. so guess not.

Until this morning I was using 2004. I stopped years ago but then decided to start up again. Went back and entered several years worth of spending transactions and investment data on a couple of funds going back to 1987 and a few years of some others. With all of my free time now I am debating whether I should try to go back further, just for fun. I'd have to convert the data, but I think I've got backup files from the early 90's forward.

Anybody want CD's for Quicken 2004, or 2000, or 1995? I might even be able to dig up floppies from earlier versions. :D

Now that Quicken has changed/fixed their site and free is no more then I would expect something as the following. Quicken to honor the free subscription for the first year as indicated in the above image - (free subscription)Service Ends: February 3, 2019. But don't be surprised that Quicken will charge you normal subscription pricing in years 2-5 to allow access to services that are not local to your computer and requires Quicken servers or Quicken authorization of a paid subscription.

My 2 cents.

A participant on Reddit (/r/churning) reported that customer support is saying that Quicken management plans to honor the 5- year subscription for those who got one. I have no other sources to confirm that.

I imagine Quicken will say something today. Then again, they may remain quiet to let this just go away.

Edit: my Quicken still says it expires in 2023.

Mine too. There seems to be some confusion about this on Quicken ID, My Account:

1. The PLAN DETAILS section shows "Duration: Feb 04 2018 – Feb 05 2023."

2. But the Your Purchases section shows:
QUICKEN PREMIER 2018 DIRECT DOWNLOAD 5YR
Platform: N/A
Date Purchased: February 4, 2018
Service Ends: February 3, 2019
Not available for Download •

Just want to say thank you for the link. I spent all day yesterday on this new software. I have to say I like it much better than YNAB. I got 5-year subscription for $0 but after yesterday I will pay for it if I have to.
