Quicken Premier 5-year subscription $0 (free) on quicken website

Post by donfairplay » Sun Feb 04, 2018 7:58 am

Yes, it's probably a price mistake. Yes, the person in charge of pricing probably will get fired. And yes, we know you don't trust the cloud.

But for the rest of us, a nearly $60 or $70 annual purchase for five years at the price of $0 (free), the upside is pretty sunny. Didn't charge my credit card either. Use a virtual card, turn off auto-renew, yadda yadda.

Wow, that's an amazing deal. The link worked for me, too. Either it's a pricing error, or they are trying to get some of their customers back after drastically changing their pricing model. I double checked after the purchase, and my account now says that the "duration" of my Premier account is from Feb 04 2018 to Feb 05 2023.

Just as a heads up, there have been crazy prices for Quicken before where Quicken honored the mistake. Some years ago they had deluxe for free (2 years, boxed software back then) through a referral link that they couldn't/wouldn't stop. But that was way back when Intuit owned it, not a PE firm.

This is a different animal because its now a subscription service. Guess we'll see.

This worked for me too, with the same results in My Account. I have downloaded the software to my computer, but think I will wait a while to install it; in case they decide to remotely rescind their probable mistake, I don't want to lose access to my existing Quicken 2017 information; Quicken installs typically overwrite prior versions.

I also completed this deal, but will wait to install for a bit.

It may be motivated reasoning, but I don't think this is a mistake. The email confirmation lists my purchase as QUICKEN PREMIER 2018 DIRECT DOWNLOAD 5YR FREE" They had to put references to the $0 price in more than one location, both in text and numerically.

Just ordered. They did want the credit card information which I provided. However, I'm in the same boat. Downloaded but holding off on the install until this all settles out. I like Quicken 2017 Premier now and have another two years of support on it that I don't want to break if this turns out to be an error that the company tries to correct later.

Same here, I'll wait to install, but probably not too long. For the required credit card number, I used a Citibank Virtual Account Number with a $50 limit, in case they decide to charge me anyway. ($50 would be the limit I'd pay for the new version of Q.) They didn't pre-authorize the card for anything.

Heads up --- it sets your "Auto-Renew" to On --- It's easy to turn off auto-renew in your profile settings though.

How about free for 5 years?

5-Years Quicken Premier 2018 (PC Digital Download)

This is probably an error but it works, at least currently. Note it's a ~275MB download.

Hah! I just spent 2+ hrs yesterday trying to transfer Quicken 2016 to a new computer, with no luck (wouldn't accept my old Intuit ID nor my newer Quicken ID). Lo and behold, this download installed flawlessly! I agree their intent is probably to expand their subscription user base.

It's certainly a great deal for those still using Quicken, and leery of upgrading to the subscription model.

I do not want to provide any account information to my bank or brokerage.
Without that, what can Quicken is used for or provides ?

First you "buy" the free version, then go to My Account and download either Windows or Mac version.

BTW I was able to "buy" this using a zero-balance prepaid Visa card. Auto-renew won't get too far with that.

Interesting, on my account page, under purchases it says service ends in 1 year. Also, please note that there is no "download" link (unlike my older purchases, which have them). This suggests this may not be easily transferable to a new computer. You'll want to save the setup program. Also, backup your data file in case Quicken reverses this and you need to revert to the old version.

Image

Edit: There is a download link, but in a different spot on the page. Also the "Duration" on the account page conflicts with the image above. Very confusing.

Thanks for the the link! I have a mac, but was able to buy the $0 windows version and then download the mac version.

I'll wait till tomorrow to upgrade... I don't want them to come back and say it was a pricing error, and then I get stuck with the yearly upgrade fee's in order for me to use the software.

Also, after the purchase, I went into my account and turned off "Auto-Renew".

I notice the exact same thing - duration shows through 2/5/2023 but service ends 2/3/19. I’m wondering if it’s set to annually renew at $0 for 4 years. If that’s the case, maybe leaving auto renew set to “on” is best?

Why are people waiting to download? Once it's downloaded there's nothing they can do. They can't go ahead and charge you the price it should have been if it's a mistake. You agreed to pay $0, not whatever it normally is.

I notice the exact same thing. I am currently using the Quicken for Mac 2016, so I will wait to be sure there is not a problem before installing since it is good until April 30, 2019.

Update, for what it’s worth. I had disabled auto renew, but then re-enabled it. It took me to a page to enter a cred it card number and shows my renewal date as 2/5/2023. I also received an email with invoice for $0 for the five years and an another confirmation email stating my renewal date is 2/4/2023.

Just sharing for those who have questions. The Slickdeals discussion contains 384 posts as I write this, so you'll probably find answers there.

Quicken is now a subscription service, and it is my understanding that the program by itself is pretty limited without the subscription.

I just downloaded it as well for $0.00. Got confirmation email, with expiry date 2-4-2023. I did go into my account and cancelled the auto update. I'm quite satisfied with Q2017 that I have now; and will hold Q2018 in reserve until I have reason to install it.

I am long time user of Quicken; and as a curiosity, logged into my account to view products. Was offered Q2018 at price of $67.49! So, whatever they're doing, I'm taking advantage of it.

While it does seem like too good to be true, it seems odd that they also have the word "FREE" in the description. I could see if someone just accidentally messed up the price, but to have the word free in the description seems intentional. I wonder if maybe it was supposed to be for 1 year instead of 5 years?

I received two emails. One was an order confirmation. One was titled important changes to your quicken account, with the subscription being upgraded from Deluxe to Premier and the 2023 expiration. I was a Deluxe 2018 subscriber, for what its worth.

I think at this point, Quicken's website, subscription service, and pricing policy can be best described as the shrug emoji:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

IANAL but they made me an offer, I accepted it and I "paid" for it in full. That's a "done deal." They may have a loophole because the amount of "payment" was $0. If it had been $1 then they'd have a harder time to cancel the transaction.

Well just browsing quickly through the Slickdeals forum, it sure does seem like a mistake. People on there are reporting making the "purchase" multiple times to extend their subscription for 5, 10, 15, or 20 or more years. No way quicken is going to allow that.

If this is the case then they can just take the subscription service away if its an error, not charge you the amount it should be without you agreeing.
IANAL but they made me an offer, I accepted it and I "paid" for it in full. That's a "done deal." They may have a loophole because the amount of "payment" was $0. If it had been $1 then they'd have a harder time to cancel the transaction.
I think there are state-by-state laws related to mispricing, and California (where Quicken is headquartered) is very consumer-friendly. The class action attorneys (if it comes to that) may argue that Quicken is deriving value from the future revenue stream of new subscribers.

People on there are reporting making the "purchase" multiple times to extend their subscription for 5, 10, 15, or 20 or more years. No way quicken is going to allow that.

Well just browsing quickly through the Slickdeals forum, it sure does seem like a mistake. People on there are reporting making the "purchase" multiple times to extend their subscription for 5, 10, 15, or 20 or more years. No way quicken is going to allow that.
Some of them are jokesters. Some are trying with multiple email addresses/accounts.

However, there is a slight loophole if you purchased a two-year subscription (mostly through Amazon), and then upgraded, it will tack on 5 years after your 2 year subscription ends.

Benway, I tried the same thing which initially looked like it worked but when I clicked on "my account" at the top of the screen the page reloaded and showed the same expiration of 2019 as before.

The good news is that the duration is still showing good through February 5th, 2023:

Interesting. I haven't used Quicken in years, but I "bought" the 5-year subscription.

Thanks, donfairplay. I also used a virtual card with a $1 limit, paused it afterwards, and turned off auto-renew. The best I can tell, they didn't even authorize the typical $1 against the card.

Will Quicken survive 7 years, or even 5?

I think at this point, Quicken's website, subscription service, and pricing policy can be best described as the shrug emoji:

¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Slightly off-topic, but the forum software supports emoji's, like 🤷
^^^ You beat me to it. 🤷

I just downloaded the free 5-year subscription, but I won't install it now. Maybe later, as I've switched over to Moneydance and going back to Quicken is not a sure thing.

I consider it a 5-year term life policy on Moneydance. If I really need Quicken, it's a zero-cost change until 2/4/2023.

The auto-renew feature in my user profile has been disabled.

YMMV, but mine has the license extended in the actual software.

Click on the Help menu, then click on About Quicken

As with "lifetime" guarantees it's important to know whose lifetime they mean ;)

This "deal" has now been posted on Quicken's customer support site: Quicken - get your ducks in a row and don’t mistakenly offer your software free for 5 years. Of course with today being Sunday, the powers-that-be may not see it until Monday. And even then that assumes they're not hungover from SuperBowl celebrations.

I double-checked the license agreement, which seems to be more flexible than earlier versions. Can I Install Quicken On Multiple Computers?
2018 Release of Quicken (All versions)

With these releases, there is no limit on how many computers Quicken can be installed on. However, you will need to sign in with the same Quicken ID on each computer as the membership is linked to your Quicken ID.
One copy is all I need.
