Help Me Spend $900.00 Unused FSA Dollars

Post by coupleofcents » Fri Jan 19, 2018 8:57 am

Hi Bogleheads,

I had $1,125 reserved in my FSA account for 2017, which equals my families annual deductible through my work health insurance. With the birth of my first son in late 2016, I thought having more medical expenses but it turns out nearly everything was covered by my health insurance for the doctor check-ups and stuff.

I now have about $900.00 left and I am eligible to use it until March 15th this year, but I'm not eligible to roll over anything after March 15th, 2018.

I've stocked up on some first aid supplies. Neither my wife nor I have glasses. I'm running out of ideas with how to use the money. I recently talked to my dentist about redoing 2 crowns on my teeth that are 9 years old.

I did not elect for FSA in 2018 given it seems like we barely spend anything out of pocket.

Any other ideas?

My employer allows us to carry over $500. Have you asked about that possibility?

Maybe go get a bunch of massages?

Checkup with bloodwork

Feel blessed.

We always opt for the max and use it up by July.

Can you buy things considered preventative using the FSA, like sunscreen?

Checked with that and they only allow you to spend through March 15th, but you can't roll over anything after that.

A massage sounds good. Maybe I should go to a chiropractor... if i could find time.

Perhaps those designer sunglasses you've always wanted?

Edit - you might need to purchase these at an eyeglass shop (LensCrafters, Pearle, etc.) to qualify for FSA.

Mileage to/from Dr appointments could add up, especially with newborn. Parking, tolls, etc.

Anything with shoe inserts, podiatry? Baby care items may be covered, there should be a listing to reference. Baby formula looks to be if stated to be necessary by doctor - not latching for breastfeeding could be a reason.

A quick search on Google shows many lists with ideas.

This happened to me too. I did the following:

1. Massages/acupuncture.
2. Designer glasses.
3. Store credit where I bought the designer glasses.

Make sure the credit card terminal at the place you want to use the FSA money is labeled "health or medical."

Does anybody in the family have any dental related items? I have found that nothing eats up my FSA balance quite like a trip to the dentist or two.

Everything at fsastore.com qualifies. Time to stock up on thermometers, heating pads, sunscreen, blood pressure monitors, overnight underpants for your toddler (I'm not even kidding -- those are FSA eligible), etc.

Not to get too personal but we bought condoms, first aid kits for home & both cars, sun block and bug repellant when we had leftover FSA dollars.
We rarely have medical bills beyond a $319 for a replacement crown in 2017.

Use to have FSA. Biggest scam. you either use it or loose it. I end up loose it. tax saving scam. Plus, the money is sitting there earning nothing. The earning loss would exceed tax saving. People have to make unnecessay purchase to use the money left in FSA. Big waste.

Great resource, though their prices may be higher. You can probably buy same items at Walmart, Amazon or elsewhere for less, but have to submit receipts for claims. But I couldn't come up with $900 to spend there.

If you're planning on some elective surgery, you can time it so it's done after you fund it. Since you have the funds, ever consider plastic/cosmetic surgery? (check the list above for what is allowed)

I tried it a couple of times, and came to the conclusion it wasn't worth the trouble unless you have some chronic medical condition.

What about vitamins and supplements? High protein bars and drinks? We tended to have no trouble using our FSA but having to submit the paperwork was tedious. Dental work did get it used up pretty quickly, as well as sunglasses, eyeglasses, contacts, travel to see our out-of-state MDs, blood pressure monitor, all the copays, allergy control barriers like pillow encasings, air cleaner and replacement filters, they all added up. Generally we’d put aside the max and use it up by July as well.

Now that H retired we no longer qualify to have FSA. It should be allowed to rollover rather than be taken!

If you use it correctly, you'll save 25% (marginal tax rate). Do you have a budget and know where your money went in prior years? Project your medical expenses this year and elect the correct amount.

OP:
1. Visit your doctor/specialist, do an annual check-up.
2. Submit receipts of prescription drugs that you did not charge your FSA card in the past year.
3. Buy things that you're going to need later at https://fsastore.com/
4. Save $500 to rollover to next year, if your FSA plan allows it.

I always put in large amount and I used them all. There was not a single year that I lost on anything. It’s not a scam.

You need to project your health spending then budget FSA. For me, I can't project.

I've never lost anything, I typically put in an amount that I know I will spend and am done with it by mid year. Typically a couple big dentist of vision items wipe it out.

Yes, I actually did get a few of those personal items. Well I just found out the insurance has approved 2 crowns so that will be about $450 I can use. So now, I just need to order $450.00 of condoms:)

Thanks everyone for the replies. I just found out I will redo 2 crowns at the dentist for $450.00 and my wife is going for a dentist check up so we'll see if any work needs to be done.

Otherwise, I will hit up FSA store for more essentials come early March before my March 15 deadline.

Agree, I always found FSA to be very inflexible.

HSA is much better, at least you get to keep the money and optionally invest it.

I had to empty an FSA before the end of last year to get my employer's HSA contribution, so I spent a lot of time on www.fsastore.com. There are a lot of things you need when you have little kids that are FSA-eligible that you wouldn't necessarily think of:

1) Hand sanitizer
2) Band aids
3) Sunscreen
4) Boo boo bunnies
5) Saline nose sprays, nasal aspirators
6) Thermometers (get a nice forehead scanner one)

Granted, you're not going to spend $900 on those, but it can help to use up $ on things you're going to buy anyway.

Have skin/blood samples tested for chromosomal telomere length. Tests range from $89 to $800 depending on the lab. Real quick and easy and can be done at home.

Vitamins & Supplements are disallowed by the IRS unless you have a prescription (and a past FSA administrator even required some very specific language on the prescription before accepting it).

Contact lens products count. So do things like wrist, back, or knee braces, that high-tech stick on tape you see athletes using.

Most FSA administrators have a list of allowable products.

Edit to add: eye exams are a good idea, even if you don't wear glasses.

Lots of good ideas. Two specific instances of general categories (orthotics and sunscreen):
1. Superfeet foot beds (inserts). ~$50 each for the green ones and I think they're great.
2. Fancy Sunscreen. I spent $50 on "Jack Black Double Duty" SPF 20 (so it qualifies) and a facial moisturizer ... livin' the 1% life! :) It is nice stuff.

The dentist will allow but your third party FSA administrator will probably not reimburse you for the prepayment. It is better to call the administrator.

"Whereas IRS rules generally prohibit reimbursement for prepayment of expenses (including one-time lump sum payments for medical services not yet incurred), the current regulations include an exception for orthodontia that allows participants to be reimbursed for prepayments for qualified expenses."

I was in the same boat a few years ago and scored a killer set of Oakley's at lenscrafters. After that, I hit Amazon to see what they had in medical supplies that was FSA approved. Stocked up and made sure every penny was spent. Felt like a kid in a candy store.

This is never a problem for us but here's a list of possibilities I can think of:
- Ongoing prenatal vitamins for your wife (if you are thinking of more kids)
- Any nagging issues that a physical therapist could help with? Depending on the state you might be able to "self-refer" and pay cash.
- Either you or your wife have braces as a kid and like a new set of retainers (or to get retainers, invisialign, etc)?

I'm in Atlanta area. That's my price after my insurance. So the total price is a lot more I'm sure. I've been told I have pretty good insurance from both doctors and dentist.

Too bad you don't need prescription eyewear, that always takes care of mine...

To tack on to the condom suggestion: if you're finished having kids, vasectomy or tubal ligation, if they aren't covered 100% by insurance. Although good luck getting them scheduled before the end of March.

Dental work is probably your best bet. Tooth whitening supplies might do it, with the crown being replaced already

Get a good blood pressure monitor if high blood pressure might be a problem now or in the future.

Massages are good if you can get your doctor to write you a note for medical need, I believe you're supposed to have it for massages, at least I was required a few years ago. The company that does compliance for my FSA (ASIFlex) is incredibly militant about charges, even going so far as requiring documentation for substantiating using the supplied debit card. I hated dealing with them so much I stopped using the FSA after that year, the hassle just wasn't worth the savings. They constantly denied valid charges for nit-picky reasons making incredible work on my part to get reimbursed.

I liked using the fsastore.com to find valid purchases, but then I made the purchases at Amazon. The prices were better and I didn't seem to have any problem with Amazon's itemized receipts (a seeming miracle).

Custom orthotics and inserts for your footwear can run up quickly, as can allergy control barriers for bedding. We have allergy control barriers on all beds and pillows in our house as we are ALL allergic and it has made a world of difference. HEPA air cleaners have also made a huge difference and your MD could write an Rx for them. All of this was deductible.

What about a cardio-monitor for exercising? FitBit or similar to record your steps and heart rate? Blood pressure machine? Gym membership?

AED should kill most of it. We bought ours from Costco when they were on sale and we found ourselves in your situation. I think it was around $900-$1000 all in. If it isn't on sale I think it is like $1200.
