printing 1099s

Post by samsmith »

I am using TurboTax Business to prepare 1099s. Does anyone know if I have to use the red preprinted forms to submit to IRS (and if so how can i get Turbotax to print with these forms)? Or can I just submit the black and white 1099 form that TutboTax produces?

That's a good question. When I have had employees I always used the red pre-printed forms. I assume as long as you report they will accept it.

Sorry not much help but an excellent question of process.

It's been a while for me, but I remember something about having to send the red ones. I had to buy the red ones at Staples and it came with software for printing (maybe the IRS will send you some for free??)

Not authoritative IRS pub, but first Google hit addresses this:
TurboTax website wrote: You do not need to use the red forms (government filing copy) to file your 1099-MISC and 1096 forms.

The IRS will accept these forms even if the are not printed in color.

You also have the option to e-file these forms using TurboTax (Home & Business edition for desktop or Self-Employed for online).
