How much did you contribute to your 401k in 2017?

Post by miamivice »

Two questions:

1) How much did you contribute to your 401k in 2017?

2) What is your current age?

I'll start.

Age 38. 2017 employee contributions are $14,000. Wife contributed maybe $12,000.

Not a 401(k), but a 403(b): I will contribute $24,000 plus my university's contribution. I am 52.

The year's not over yet, and we still have two paychecks left (this Friday and Dec. 29), but I will hit $18,000 on my last paycheck of the year (plus match). I'm 47.

My wife, also 47, has not had a 401(k) this year. She's been working in a contract position. We're hoping she'll be hired and be eligible after the new year, in which, we would try to max out hers as well.

By the end of the year (need to contribute every pay period or lose the match), $24k in 401k, $6500 in Roth, wife $6500 in Roth (she has no 40x anything). Taxable about $83k. This was a great year for bonuses, RSUs and employee stock program gains. I'm 60.

Age 52.

My actual contribution is around $35k. The rest is employer match.

36 - would have been $18,000+ match but just found out a few minutes ago that they took 401k contributions out of our bonus and my last check of the year will take into account my annual review raise (two things which they did not do last year), so I am going to have to do some quick math to not overcontribute. Nice that I received another check with a match and a few extra dollars on the year's last paycheck, but it screwed up the plan.

wife (31) - $18,000+ match. Her employer allows set/flat contributions and not percentages so it was very straightforward. I am so confused as to why this isn't an option for every 401k program, even more confused because the 401k provider for both our employers is the same company.

457: Approx 13k for the entire year
401: Approx 1.5k for the entire year
IRAs: Approx 3-5k
Age 49 and Married

I feel like the under achiever in the group but I know that I am a freak at work. We make 90k+ before taxes. One guy hit 250k. Even still most are amazed that I save so much but to me it is normal. I have a nicer house than most, decent cars, the toys that I want, kids do scouts & music lessons. I do separate savings for the kids college funds. I have some really cool toys. I am not depriving my family of anything so why not save. I just get blank stares most of the time.

My 401k: $18k pre-tax, and approx $13K post-tax (will hit $54K total limit with employer contributions). Doing the mega-backdoor Roth thing with the post-tax money in the 401k.

Wife 457 - approx $10k, started in September. Will hit $18.5K next year provided my wife stays employed and tax laws on 457/403b contributions limits do not change. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Wife 403(b) - approx $3k. Started contributions in November. Will also hit $18.5k next year on this too, same stipulations as above.

Both of us are mid-40's.

My wife and I are both 43. I'm a public school teacher and she works for a small business. Neither of us have a 401k available but here are some contributions toward retirement we had in 2017:

457b: $18,000
403b: $4,900
Roth IRAs: $11,000
Taxable Brokerage Accounts: $4,300
Brokerage Bonuses (for account transfers): $2,000
SEP-IRA (contribution made fully by wife's employer): $6,800
Pension contributions (me): $10,500
Pension contributions (my employer): $14,000
Pension contributions (state): $9,600

Gross income: $154k. We contribute just enough to stay in the 15% tax bracket. Last year, we had $14 left to spare in the 15% bracket. This year should be about the same.

I'll hit the $60K all sources plus catch up on the last paycheck of the year. The breakdown:
$18K+$6K deductible contribution
$12.5K employer match
$23.5K after tax and mega-backdoor'd to Roth IRA

I'm 59 y.o. It takes 25% salary deferral to make those numbers happen.

I also did a $6.5K backdoor Roth, $4.4K HSA, $2K into solo 401K and $15K into taxable brokerage.
2017 was a good savings year. This is the 3rd year in a row of max'ing everything tax advantaged available.

I'm probably the real underachiever, but in my defense I didn't take a specific interest in investing until a few months ago. I've just been putting in 6% pre tax for the past 18 years with 80% match, which was only about 10k overall. I'm in good shape at 38 and I have a pension coming as well, but I wish I took more interest in this stuff 10 years ago. Hopefully next year I'll have a better answer to this question.

Both my spouse and I contributed the max to our 401k. We are both 46. Both of also received (just like in past years) a large amount in employer contribution to our 401k’s on top of the money we contributed ourselves.

Did pretty much the same thing, though I worked till Apr 1. Maxed 401K, HSA+catchups, and spousal IRA. Started maxing my 401K in my early 40's when the cash flow situation got easier.
