31 (me) / 32 (wife)
401k's = 37k + 8k company matching
Roths = 11k
HSA = 3k
Pension plan = 7k (wife's)
Taxable account = 24k (approximate goal for 2018)
Total ~90,000/year
We also do regular 529 contributions setup for $5k/year currently. Daycare if costing us about $21k/year so hopefully in a few years more funds will be allocated towards investments. We have about $650k invested and $230k cash sitting for a home purchase in 1-2 years.

30/32 DINK (for now), moderate COL area
Joint income $164k (both got new jobs this year!). The biggest difference for us financially has been hitting the steep part of the career growth curve in a location with plentiful jobs at a time when wages are rising. Income has more than doubled in 5 years. We have been very fortunate.
We'll save ~30% of gross for retirement by maxing out two t401ks and getting some company match and maxing out 2 rIRAs.
We are also paying extra on our mortgage and it will be finished in 7 more years after 15 years of payments.
This year about half of our increase in salary is being funneled to short term taxable savings for deferred house updates, next car, vacation and some expected medical expenses. Next year we'll likely open a taxable retirement account for the first time.

Question for those putting away so much in retirement - are you actively looking at passive income making opportunities like income properties?
Absolutely not.
I house hacked for the first several years that I owned and I don't ever want to be directly exposed to rental risk again. The potential of a malicious or just indifferent person to damage the ability to make money with the house is significant. Also I don't like to work more than I have to and have a full time job already. A management company could buffer these concerns, in return for most or all of the profit margin that would make a rental attractive.
My real estate play is to pay off my own mortgage to reduce my predicted retirement expenses.

Agree completely
Dealing with a lawsuit for “inadequate heat and hot water” for our rental property and the saga is still ongoing after 4 months. All over a $250 fine
I make that much in the first fifteen minutes of my work day
Cannot wait to sell the rental property, savor the property appreciation (gotta love SF, property value has nearly doubled over the last 5 yrs), and focus on working hard at work and then spending time with family at home (quality time, not time spent arguing over how to word emails to housing lawyer)

DW and I are 34 and 32, respectively. No kids, though we want kids soon. Gross salary combined is about $140k.
Yearly Savings:
401k/TSP with employer matches: $45k (Balance: $200k)
Roths: $11k (Balance: $100k)
Taxable: $9k (Balance: $100k)
TOTAL: $65k (Total Retirement Balance: $400k, though realistically some of the taxable balance will be rolled into a 529)
This generally leaves us with roughly $1,000 per month in excess after we pay all our monthly bills, etc. By the time annual expenses like property taxes, homeowners and auto insurance, plus unforseen expenses like home repairs and the like come up, it doesn't hurt to have that extra monthly cushion. I am hoping that when we have kids we are able to keep our current savings in place. If so, the plan is for my wife to retire at age 55 (21 years away) and for me to retire at age 59 (27 years away) when I will be pension eligible, which will pay roughly 30% of my highest 3 years of salary.
Cheers!

But don't want to spend any more either, don't feel like buying anything at this point in life. Living like the Jones' already. We donate a lot of time and money, that's the only other thing really important to us at this time. Maybe will make time for more travel.

37 yo/DW 36. We max 2 401k's, 1 457 and 2 Roth IRAs. Also contribute extra to 1 pension to the tune of around 14-15k per year that grows @ 8.25%. Plan is to withdraw any excess contributions at retirement from the pension and roll over to an IRA. Annual total saved is $55,500 pre-tax, $11,000 Roth IRA, a small annuity fund which my job contributes around $1,500 per year into and about $15,000 excess contributions into the pension for a total of around $83,000 per year. I started saving late, I was in my early/mid 30's, so I have to kick it up a couple notches...

I guess about $19-20K, about half of which is matching. We both contribute just enough to match in our 401Ks.
Combined with DW, in percentage terms, we used to save 10-15%, with our employers throwing in another 4-5%. So, a total between 15 and 20%.
Now we save about 6%, with our employers throwing in another 6% or so, for a total of around 12%.
We have prioritized away from saving. After matching, money goes to health care, kids, and paying down debt - Heloc and business loan, primarily.

Yes, 30-40k spending.
We paid 95k for our unit (50k rennovation). Half the housing expenses are expenses for the other unit we rent. Single family homes are very expensive.
1 car with a short commute helps. Cars are very expensive. Living in a city where housing is affordable and it's not necessary to have a car is important to us.
We eat out a fair bit and buy what I would call luxurious food (diet mainly berries, avocados, nuts, meats, dairy). We don't buy cheap food like refined grains, sugary fruits, beans.
Since we travel frugally, trips to Africa, Sweden/Denmark, Spain, Ireland last year didn't hurt our savings rate much. We credit card churn and tack vacations onto work trips (Spain/Ireland).
No kids yet, but we do have a dog which is our biggest inefficiency.

Things get out of control quickly on this group for this type of question. Just saving something puts you ahead of most. We've not maxed retirement options every year, some good years we have, most we have not. Do what you can and avoid compares to different people - especially here - is the right approach.

This is spot on. My mantra (when working), was "Save until it hurts. And then just a little bit more..." But it's a very individual thing. Again,
do the best YOU can and you'll sleep well at night knowing there's nothing more you could have done. Don't worry about others, it could have the opposite effect and instead of encouraging you, you get discouraged because you feel you're not measuring up.
[/quotsave 300K if you're making $125K gross, so what is the relevance of what others are saving?
+2 Be yourself. No need to compare your saving rate to others. Live within your mean is the point. Save 15% to 20% is generally fine. Teat yourself nicely. Never be a miser. Live a happy is more important than to become a miser.

38 years old. Have a wife and 5 rather expensive kids.
I have a full-time job at a nonprofit and am also separately self-employed (I employ my wife as well), so lots of opportunities to optimize. I got started saving very late thanks to several graduate degrees, two of which went long, so I have a lot to make up for. Moreover, it's very likely that my future earnings will be lower than what I currently make so I'm trying to seize the day.
$18,500 - elective contribution to my solo 401(k)
$9,000 - nonelective contribution to my solo 401(k)
$23,959 - nonelective contribution to my 403(b)
$18,500 - elective contribution to my 457(b)
$18,500 - elective contribution to my wife's 401(k)
$5,500 - my backdoor roth
$5,500 - wife's backdoor roth
Total: $99,459 per year.
I don't save anything to speak of in taxable accounts. Just a basic 2-month emergency fund.
I also hire my daughter to clean my home office for $5,500 a year, deposited to her Roth. That's her saving, though, not mine.

34 years old, wife 28.
Income ~350k, with wife's being about 2/3rds of that. We live in a high cost of living area.
For this year we're looking at saving around 163k, with about 114k of that being aftertax.
I'm lucky with my wife having a job that has nearly tripled in salary in the last several years. Meanwhile we haven't drastically upgraded our lifestyle and could live off my income alone if needed. So this means a lot leftover for saving. It hasn't always been easy to save such a large amount though - since she does the majority of the earning, she rightly wants to enjoy it. I just try to bump up our spending much more slowly than our income might otherwise allow!

We got a late start on saving (4 kids, college, procrastination) but luckily both incomes have moved up nicely over the last 10 years so we are getting close.

HSA: $6850
401k employee: $18500

Roth IRA: $11000

Looks like we're only par for this forum with a 35% savings rate which is just fine in my book. We prefer to spend rather than save more in taxable.

early 40's couple, single income until this year. This year will be $123k, barring any further promotions, but with spouse going back to work brought child care costs. Live in Very HCOL area and rent currently.
401k - 17k (incl match)
Spouse 401k - 4k
principle pay on rental house - $7,500 (15 year term).
Total - $28,500 / 23%
Adding in a few other small savings buckets and we are at 26% savings rate. This does not include small amounts of stock grants which would put total savings to 30%. It's hard to compare to most on here but this is an accomplishment coming off a one income hh the last 5 years and living in a very HCOL area + having two young kids at home.

Him (29 years old) and her (27 years old)
Him:
401k - 20k (includes match)
After tax 401k - $12k (mega back door)
Back door roth - $5.5k
Taxable - $12k
Her:
401k - $22.5k (includes match)
Taxable - $12k
Back door roth -$5.5k
Total: $89.5k
Not entirely retirement because the taxable accounts will be used to purchase a house.

Both 32:
Her 401k: 18k
His 401k: ~$29k (employer match)
IRAs: 11k
HSA: $6k
Pension Cash Balance Contribution: ~$12k (automatic percentage of salary)
529 (not technically a retirement account I suppose): $30k
Taxable (more variable than the above- any excess after above funded): $50-100k
"Stretch" goal is $200k/yr savings.
Right now we both make very good incomes, but I know it may not last forever. Life happens. We may cry uncle balancing childcare with two full time jobs. Hoping to hit FI before life happens
