Late 30s. In 2016 I saved about 85% of after-tax income (mid six figures), trying to hit 90% this year.

I'm an American living in Japan and I an banned from making 401(k) contributions. Or, I can make them but Japan will tax them because Japanese people save too much as it is. So all my money (except for my old IRA that I can't add money to) is in taxable stock accounts, plus three investment properties in San Diego.

I'm 40.

I don't know the answer to the question though. Max my 401k...whatever is left over after spending gets saved, but it's different every year.

I will post combined for my wife and myself because what is mine is hers and what is hers is hers

I have a defined pension, she has a 401k. I am 32 she is 31. We just finally got up to full steam.

I max out my 457 at 18k +5% of my salary city matches 15%. I also put 5500 into my Roth.

She puts 18k into her 401k and megacorp matches the first 4.8%. She also puts 5500 into her Roth.

We also put around 20k into our taxable account. We plan on upping this every year.

Our forcasted investing in 2018 should be around $80,000 if all goes well. Our goal is save 50% of our gross income.

It's funny. Talking to people at work I feel like I'm the only one in the world saving for retirement. Reading on here I feel like I am not doing nearly enough.
This is sooo true! I joined this forum about a year ago and read it almost every day. It is such a good source of motivation and keeps me focused on my savings goals.
Yes my wife calls you my rich folk friends. As much as I get advice from the people here it is very nice to have people to talk about investers plans about without the stigma of being well off.

30 years old and I save around 40% of my take home pay per year. If its a good year i try to hit 50%. A year with extra vacations or home maintenace, i fall down to about 30% savings rate. I max tax advantaged retirement accounts and HSA. Extra goes into taxable.

My daughter is 27 and she’s lucky to save $5k for Roth and $5K for SEP IRA per year. But I keep telling her to save. However, she pays for everything now and I’m really proud of her. She is not a high earner but she loves being her own boss and she loves her job. What more can I ask. No debt too.

My other daughter is 21, but saves $18k for 401k, $5k for Roth. This is for retirement only per year. I’m sure she saves more out of her retirement.

I am 44, wife is 39.

We save:

$36,000 401k(s)+ 4% match and variable profit sharing (me) and 3% wife
$11,000 Roth
$3,400 HSA (me)
$36,000ish taxable (usually $3,000/month sometimes more, sometimes less depending on bills/spending)

Total $86,000 + employer match + variable profit sharing amount and whatever my wife gets in her defined benefit pension.

We make a combined gross W-2 Income of ~$169k.

My wife and I live in a VLCOL area ($34k median income) with a paid for house, can't have kids, never take vacations, have no life and fret about spending $10 to buy a video game.

Last 12 months we spent ~$36,000 total including hitting my $3,000 deductible my HDHP.

I am 34 and my wife is 37.

Her 401K: $18,000 + a match of 125% up to 6% of her salary
Her Roth IRA: $5500
His Traditional IRA: $5500
HSA: $6750
With employer match it works out to just over $40,000 a year

We have 529's set up for both our children as well
Son: $5200/yr
Daughter: $5200/yr
We keep those separate but do keep up with the total on the chance they don't go to college and the funds roll back to us (with the penalty of course)

do the best you can. I had ZERO savings at 34. STAY FRUGAL AND NO TRADING OF FUNDS. You will be fine. More you can save now, better in long run.
+1
My first dollar in retirement savings was contributed when I was 36 in 2011. And I didn't know anything about personal finances and was only saving a paltry 3% of my income. It took me a full 4 years before I learned much about finances and started maxing out my 401K. All to say you will be just fine. Just keep at it, stay consistent and save the best you can. You will be ok

I'm 33 and wife is 32.

2017 is the first year we'll both max out our 401Ks, ROTH and my HSA. Our combined income could have allowed us to max these out sooner, had we not spent all our money on WANTs.

All together, we should achieve our goal of 72K saved for the year. It's a great balance for us. Hoping we can save at least this much moving forward.

37 years old. 10% of gross income into 401k (includes employer match), 5% of gross income goes into Roth. Started when I was 25 years old. For me this amount has provided me the balance to feel good about what I'm saving for tomorrow while still having money to enjoy today. IF I make it to retirement, I'll adjust my lifestyle accordingly to work with the amount of money I've saved.

Age 56 and around 35% of gross salary per year saved for retirement which includes maxing my 401K plus at least 75% of any bonuses and/or RSU sales.

I'm 40. Max 401k, 2 Roth IRAs, and employer contribution is about $40k. Anything I have in taxable I consider to be used for vacations, new car, etc.

I'm 34:

26k a year in tax advantaged accounts

Every year I accrue an additional year for terms of my Federal Pension. By my math it will equate to about $1700 a year, every year, after I retire (and my wife gets half when I die). Of course the value of this will depend on how long I stay, what my high salary is, how long I live, and what Congress does to me. But considering I took a major paycut in the private sector for this job, I do think it should count as saving "something" for my retirement in any year.

My wife is a few years younger than me and she saves 18.5k in her 401k. She needs to save A LOT more going forward... but baby steps.

I'm 36, wife is 31. We both max our 401ks and Roth IRAs, so in the neighborhood of $50k/yr (with employer matches). The rest goes directly to paying extra principle on the mortgage, which we hope to have paid off in full within the next 5yrs (so, 7yrs total). By then, we'll no longer have two children in daycare and my wife's full-time school tuition so we can really ramp up the taxable investing, probably proportional to our current tax-deferred investing.

Due to disastrous first marriages and divorce, we were both essentially broke when we married 4yrs ago. We are well on our way to FIRE now.

Alright, coming in to represent the lower end...

Nearly 50. This year between 401k and SEP-IRA I am going to manage about $13k, plus $5500 into Roth IRA. My spouse has saved $5500 into Roth IRA and $0 into 401k. Between us we got maybe $2350 from our employers into our 401k's as well.

Next year, I'll only have the SEP-IRA . Maybe it'll be $3k into that and $6500 into the Roth IRA. We'll see. Hopefully another $5500 into spouse's Roth IRA and who knows into his 401k. Maybe $1000.

34...max 401k and roth ira...the other couple grand gets spread around in taxable and savings.

wife 33...she maxes tsp and roth ira

So retirement only...we save $47,000/year. Taxable varies each year.

Age 36, saving $56K per year.

Max 401K, Max HSA, Max Roth x2 (non-working spouse) and then after-tax for the rest.

This is >50% of Gross.

Lack of vacation time due extended family health problems. Since my wife and I can't have kids, every time someone in the family has a medical problem, we are the ones that go to stay with and nurse them/stay with them in the hospital/make final arrangements.

As a matter of fact it is kind of a morbid joke between us. Every time one of us decides that we are going to plan a vacation, someone will get seriously ill. We currently have plans to go to Colonial Williamsburg next Spring. We are wondering who will be the unfortunate victim of our vacation this time.

35. Saving about $12k per year in 401k and Roth IRA total. Started 401k at this job 5 years ago and only putting the minimum that they match. Only started Roth IRA a year ago... sadly.

Part of me feels like I am not saving enough. Another part of me wants the money to venture into other investments. I am conflicted.

Me: 48. Save 401K max, $18,000 and have been doing so for past 8 years (I contributed before but it took me a while to wise up and put in the max). When I turn 50, I'll add catch up funds.
Husband: 56. He saves the 401K max, plus the $6,000 catch up since he turned 50. He's been contributing the max for a while.
So between us, that's $42,000/yr.

Our total goal is $3 million - one million saved for each of us, and another million that we'll get in inheritances. Husband is getting close, with $785,000. I'm still way behind at $330,000, and I'm not exactly sure I'll make it. Still, we're in the 2 comma club, have no debt, a solid emergency fund and are able to save cash for home renovations/cars.

Me early 30:
22,000 401k including employer contribution
5,500 Roth IRA
15,000 taxable

Wife 30:
15,000 401k including employer contribution
5,500 Roth IRA
5,000 CDs/saving account

This year, we combine bring in 180k annually before tax. We might be able to save 70-75k according to our projected budget.

I'm 34 like OP.

401k - $33,000 annually - $18,000 + (6% employer match ~$15k)
Backdoor Roth - $11,000
Taxable - $36,000
Total Retirement Savings - $80,000

529's x 2 = $15,000 - $7,500/kid

Total Savings = $95k / year.
Total Gross Income = $265k or so (varies a bit)

My wife is a SAHM - I stress out about the fact she has no retirement plan in place outside of her $5.5k ROTH IRA I execute for her.

33/31

Excluding employer matches, I estimate for next year:

36k in 401ks
11k in roths
50k or so in taxable, primarily when bonuses hit in the spring but mostly throughout the year when we get 5k or so extra in the checking acct
28k in kids' 529s

Also we'll add maxing an HSA since we just switched to a HDHP, so 6900 or whatever that limit is.

Here is another data point: age 30 married, max 401ks and Roth IRAs. $250K between 401Ks and Roth IRAs, and this excludes our taxable investments and other savings.

Eat ramen noodle save as much as I can. My age is not going to be revealed in any public forum.
This isn't a public forum. Its an anonymous forum. Probably a good idea to look up the meaning of the word "public'. 8-)

Ummm.... you save $250K/year in 401Ks and IRAs? Bravo!

I think that qualifies as a Giga back door Roth.

Think of your combined accounts as one big portfolio. You stand a very good chance of reaching your goal without the inheritance if you keep saving at current level and decent market returns over your lifespan. The expected inheritance would be extra.

The stress is misplaced. Think of the entirety of assets as your retirement portfolio, the actual accounts are just placeholders. In the end, most of your financial assets can be used for whatever purpose you deem suitable. However, if you really feel stressed about it you can designate one specific taxable account as your wife’s retirement account. Stress over!

I'm not sure how this "point in time" data is really useful. I've got a variable income so if I provide my numbers this year versus last year you might draw very different conclusions. Also - even for someone without variable income - they may have not saved at the same rate all their life; and then there is the fact that different jobs increase salaries at different rates.
For instance - someone that is 56 and saving 115K per year for retirement sounds GREAT (and probably is) - but if he recently got promoted and was only saving $8K per year prior; or if he spent his life partying and didn't start saving until retirement until last year its not so great.

DW and I both mid 30s

Him: 403B mandatory contribution 5% plus employer match 10% plus elective contribution 18K = 32K
Him: Roth 5.5K
Her: 401K 18K plus match = 21K
Her: Roth 5.5K

Total: 64K (will increase as contibution limits increase)

Historically have saved around 15-20% of gross income. Recently we save whatever we have available - minimum 10%, maybe more.

It's funny. Talking to people at work I feel like I'm the only one in the world saving for retirement. Reading on here I feel like I am not doing nearly enough.
Haha, that is my exact feeling.

I’m 39 and just got serious about saving. I’ve always saved some but not enough. Currently saving $31k annually and most of it is Roth.

I second this! People at work think I'm crazy because I max out my 457 plan($18,000/yr) but when I come on here, I feel like I'm so far behind! I'm glad I found this place. It has opened my eyes to many other options to fund my retirement.
I'm 36 and just starting to really understand where to put money.

I was always proud to be saving between 15-20% then came on here and many people say they save 30-50%. Kind of initially burst my bubble, but this isn't representative of society in general.
