OP,

1) 50+. I am saving nothing for retirement. I am living paycheck to paycheck. All my annual savings go towards my 2 kids' college education.

2) But, with my portfolio at 20 times of my annual expense, I no longer need to save for my retirement/FI.

We are in our early 40's.

We save about 400k a year, mostly in taxable.

Saving 9%. 6% 401k and 3% HSA. Plus 2% emergency/opportunity fund. Love to save more, but this is my lot. We could probably afford to live off rail retirement, but alas, we can only depend on ourselves for freedom.

I'm 60, she's 57 and neither receives company match. Proud to say we will save 42% of net income this year. 2016 was 41% and 2015 was 40%. I think there may be a pattern developing here? The challenge for 2018 - find our way 43%. :beer

15% every year since my first job after college, and until a few years ago when I retired.
Some years I was able to save a bit more. One year a glitch in the system allowed me to put just over 25% into state and fed retirement plans.

I am 42 and have saved more every year for retirement than the prior year so far. Eventually that'll stop.

When I was 34 I think I put away $27K or so for retirement. But I'm not sure why the actual dollar amount would be useful to you. You need to save enough to reach your goals and your only competition is with your goals, not me or my goals.

We save $18,000 (401k #1) + $18,000 (401k #2) + $5,500 (Roth IRA #1) + $5,500 (Roth IRA #2) + $6,000 (HSA). We enjoy spending the rest of our income.

Retirement (just Roth IRA for now): 12% of family income
Savings: 6% of family income
Debt payment: 16% of family income

So, about 1/3 of my take home pay goes towards my future (or paying off my past education).

Age: early sixty something
Planned retirement age: mid sixty something

Currently working full time:
- saving maximum in tax deferred
- putting some additional $ in taxable and CDs (bulking up cash for retirement transition)
- basically have abt 26 years saved at current annual expenses (not including SS/pensions)
- plan on deferring SS to 70
- on track for having mortgage paid off at retirement
- have option for early retirement with healthcare coverage prior to 65
- but like my job so . . .

I was a bit late in saving for retirement but catching up now. Each year worked = enough money saved to spend 1 year without SS. I could retire next year and would have to tighten our belts but gliding to 2-5 years to full retirement at current life style, so the finish line is well in sight. Feels good to be on the final leg of the journey and many thanks for all on the Bogleheads forums for the feedback and knowledge. I probably would not be in the right place without you :beer

37 as of today

I save as much as I can. I save as much as 2/3 of my income and have no debt.

-I save 22% of my income and max out a t401K with an additional 4% match
-I max out a roth IRA at Vanguard
-The rest goes to taxable. I am investigating megabackdoor but the last email from my plan did not indicate the ability to take in service withdraws. However others with Well's Fargo plans have reported they are able to do it.

I live with and take care of an ailing parent so my housing expenses are very low. I don't spend much and have very simple tastes. I spent probably $1-2k per year on cycling and that is the bulk of my discretionary spending (which I regard as a wellness expense).

I simply have a great deal of professional insecurity regarding my profession. I still have to tell recruiters to F-off with offers of $15 an hour temp no benefits as an experienced MSc level analytical chemist and have seriously considered the idea in the past of changing professions completely. My current job however is great and pays very well and looks like it will last a long time as I operate very customized methods and equipment. As a result, my financial strategy is to hold on to my current job as long as possible and save and invest as much as I comfortably can.

age: 34
single filer

savings per year
401k: $18,000 + employer match of 2% of salary
backdoor: $5,500
hsa: $3,400
taxable and alternative investments: $19,530 (no work bonus) - $52,975 (maxing out work bonus)

ive been saving for retirement since age 13. not always consistent (especially through teen years), but since i started working have been religious about it and have been maxing 401/roth for the last 6 years (my company didnt get an hsa until 2016).

my gf (age 31) puts $18,000 per year in her 401 and has a ~$14,000/year retirement contribution from her company as well (tied to salary so we expect this to go up in future years). she's paying down student loans now so after that's done she can shift those monies to savings/investments.

cheers all and keep on saving!

I second this! People at work think I'm crazy because I max out my 457 plan($18,000/yr) but when I come on here, I feel like I'm so far behind! I'm glad I found this place. It has opened my eyes to many other options to fund my retirement.
I'm 36 and just starting to really understand where to put money.

Exact same here, I'm 32 and have a pension so our HR lady really put no emphasis on saving money.

Finally, When I started my 457 and talked to the plan advisor he recommended $200 a paycheck. I said ok, when I realized that was nowhere near where I wanted to be I bumped up my contribution to 1k a check to try to get to 18k a year. When I turned it in our HR lady actually said are you kidding?

 doesn't anyone care about their retirement here?

30 years old, $12k/year.

Roth IRA: 5500
457b: 5200
Pension Contribution: 1300

I count the pension because I'm not vested and don't necessarily plan on staying long enough to get vested, so I will roll the contributions into another account if I leave.

All in all, it amounts to ~20% of my annual net pay, it is a difficult saving rate as I live in a HCOL area.

38 yrs old, usually save about $100k per year though I don't make a distinction for "retirement money" as I manage all of my investments as one portfolio.

This year's bonus was higher so saved $130k so far.

HSA: $3,400
401k: $21,500 (includes $3,500 match)
Backdoor Roth: $5,500
IBonds: $10k
EEBonds: $10k
Regular taxable: $80k

30, and it depends.

Only really started in 2016. From 2012-2015 combined I saved less than $6k total. So that was a $1.5k per year start!

I managed $15,000 in 2016 but a lot of that is due to shifting cash I sat on over the years. On pace for about $12k this year. Goal is $14k next year based on anticipated budgeting. Could be radically lower if any major expense happens, as I only make $40k gross.

Traditional 401k - $21,000 (including company match)
Roth IRA - $5,500
Taxable - $55,200 ($2,300 bi-monthly)

That said I’m not actually sure I’ll use all of the taxable savings for retirement. I might use it to buy a home at some point.
If your income is low enough to qualify for the Roth, how do you have the funds to save $4600 per month in your taxable? Just curious. I am well over the Roth limit and there's no way i can put that much away. Maybe my expenses are too high...

26 years old and for 2017 I'll save for retirement:

401(k) - $12,057
401(k) ER Match - $2,585
ROTH IRA - $5,500

Total - $20,142 or 33.7% of gross income.

*Going forward I plan to max my 401(k) and IRA each year which will be just under a 40% savings rate.

As I read this post and many others, I am struck by how many DINKs and Single folks there are (that post). I would be curious to find out the demographics of the active posters.

Single income families with kids sure changes the savings game. Comes down to choices, right ?

32 single income with wife and 3yo twins.

Save approx 30-35% gross. Max 401k, HSA, and 1 Roth (2 if bonus allows). Helps keep effective fed tax rate around 10%ish of gross pay!

Plan is to make hay while the sun is shining by keeping wife happy in our modest house as long as humanly possible!

$18,000 his 401k
$18,000 her 401k
$5,500 his Roth
$5,500 her Roth
$6,750 their HSA

We have 8X annual expenses saved/invested. Looking to retire by 40, at the latest.

27 DINK HCOL

Max 2 401k, 1 HSA, 2 Roth: ~$60k w/ match

Taxable: Heavily dependent on bonus for me $20 - $70k

Her: Pension...who knows what that is worth or if she'll ever see a dime

Being moderately aggressive in paying off paying off student loans (4% interest contribute $2k a month should be gone next year so that will go to taxable).

We are trying to be as financially disciplined as possible while still enjoying nice things. Important to save as jobs can disappear but important to enjoy life as it is far too short.

18000 (401K) + $3300 (HSA, invests) + $5500 (roth IRA) = $26,800 / year
Investment Account Total Funds: ~ 140K
Don't have enough cash flow to invest in taxable quite yet. Also, need to save up some cash for possible future expenses (wedding / house, etc).

Looking for ways to increase my salary (currently at $150,000+ total compensation, started at 65K @ 22, rose up quite quickly). But live in HCOL (SoCal), so I definitely need to make more money (shooting for $200K - 250K comp range), or find a spouse that makes money too (still working on this) :D . It is quite expensive living here, also, I am not very frugal
Well you are saving more alone then I am combined with my husband we don't make as much as you but only a little less plus since it is 2 people at that salary we pay less taxes so it most likely comes out similar. So all that to say you are more frugal than most people in your situation so give yourself a :sharebeer

to ans the OP I am 36, last year I saved combined 22,500 (this was maxing all accts available to the 2 of us) this year with baby and a 40k pay cut I think I will get about 16,000 saved. Before H I was at about that level too. I have almost 200k for retirement

I'm 53 and save $24K a year. I take advantage of the catch-up provision. This year I will be able to save another $500 on top of that.

My firm also contributes $5K so I guess I save $29,500 per year. I didn't always save the max but I figure, I'm at the home stretch so I might as well.

38 - make 115k (wife is part time nurse, I'm a chemical engineer)
I cheat a little and consider savings what we spend extra or are long term costs (like school payment)
Charity - 10k (not savings exactly, but extra)
401 (k) - 6k
401 (k) match - 3k
Mortgage - 10k (not savings but will be in 4 months when mortgage is paid off).
Extra mortgage - 8k (this is savings)
HSA - 2k
Tuition - 10k (wife is in advanced nursing degree). Again not savings but will be next year when we are done with school - also this is paid out of pocket in cash. Plus her salary will go up (but we're not counting those chickens before they hatch)
Home improvement (solar) - 10k

Total ~60k/year of savings/extra.

Savings rate is ~55%

I know people will criticize my assumptions (that solar is a savings). But it gives me a roi (no electricity bills) and also is an optional coat I could roll into my savings for future years...so I count that as potential savings. I also know others would criticize my mortgage payment as a savings. But soon that all will be kept and put into the stock market or a rental place - so that soon to be savings/investment.

Total investable is 270k
Home equity is 400k
Total net worth is 670k (thank you personal capital)

I love this response. Live for today and prepare for tomorrow. Make every second count. Maximize your enjoyment in life. We all try to navigate the difficult game called life. Key word is balance and being 27 and worrying about finances my goal is to save 20% of my salary and let compound interest do the rest. Thank you for your response.

32 combined gross income is ~130k

for five years now we've maxed Roth contributions - $917 per month.
tax deferred is about $1050 per month.
generally save whatever is left over at the end of the month in taxable, unless we're saving for something else specifically.

YTD, we've contributed ~$34k. took a hit this year due to maternity leave/no pay and having to pay for daycare (!!!! yikes) for first time.

my goal is to generally have a spending/saving mix that allows me to not stress about money. my wife and i are both natural savers, so it is not difficult for us to keep spending in check. currently, not stressing about money, which is nice.

I'm 70. I'm still trying to save the difference between (RMD-taxes) and (SWR-taxes).

Crazy, isn't it?

I don't understand how so many people can say they save a certain amount unless they're coming from the perspective of a very high income. For me savings are unpredictable because I might have a large expenditure, maybe unplanned, and have negative savings for that year. It seems reasonable that if you have a mid-5-figure income like most people, fairly routine expenses can completely prevent you from saving anything for that year.

For saving and for earning, haha..

Some people are putting away amounts that I will never make in my career even factoring in 3% raises for 20 years

:P

Question for those putting away so much in retirement - are you actively looking at passive income making opportunities like income properties?

I teeter back and forth between limiting my contribution to one of my retirement accounts and purchasing a rental property instead. The rental property's monthly payment would be equivalent to the contribution that I am making to the retirement account so even if I don't have a renter I am nearly in the same ballpark in terms of out of pocket expenses. If I have a renter then that's just more icing on the cake so to speak.

Mid 20's, and maxing all retirement accounts available to me -- 401k with no match, Roth IRA, and HSA, which comes to ~$27k.

I'm also saving in my taxable account but this is not "retirement" money yet.

53/52, with one teenager.

We save 30% of our gross household income; 42% of net income.

403(b): $24K + $6.5K employer contribution
HSA: $6.5K

We spend some of that HSA money every year, but I still count it for the savings rate.

We save:

$36,000 401k(s)+ 4% match and variable profit sharing (me) and 3% wife
$11,000 Roth
$3,400 HSA (me)
$36,000ish taxable (usually $3,000/month sometimes more, sometimes less depending on bills/spending)

Total $86,000 + employer match + variable profit sharing amount and whatever my wife gets in her defined benefit pension.

We make a combined gross W-2 Income of ~$169k.

My wife and I live in a VLCOL area ($34k median income) with a paid for house, can't have kids, never take vacations, have no life and fret about spending $10 to buy a video game.

Last 12 months we spent ~$36,000 total including hitting my $3,000 deductible my HDHP.

(Don't be me)
I am really sorry you can't have kids. I confess I was a little terrified of being in that place and then felt guilt about the extreme ease in which we conceived and had our son as others younger than me I knew struggled. But that said don't not LIVE life because of that!! You have an awesome income in a LCOL place you don't need to watch your nickles and dimes. Take your wife to HI and enjoy it!

I'm 34. Expenses are about half of my gross income. I save the rest.
