Poll-How much do you have in your HSA?

Post by theplayer11 » Mon Nov 06, 2017 3:16 pm

When did you start and what is the value?
I started in 2009, today's value $67,173
I did not max early on.
I have not yet used at all for medical expenses as no major expenses so far

Started in 2015, have 6300 in it. Have maxed it out (family limit) all 3 years we've had it, but have reimbursed out of it as well. This year's reimbursements at least went into my Roth, instead of just into checking to pay the bills, so that's improvement!

Have about 14k in outstanding reimbursements allowable, mostly due to a crappy out of network bill, but we paid that with a zero interest credit card and just absorbed the hit in our "entertainment and fun money" budget.

The plan is to keep reimbursing into our Roth IRAs until we have enough in the budget to do both IRAs and the HSA, but I haven't reimbursed more yet because I want to keep the OOP max available in the HSA always, even though we could probably do another 0% interest card if we needed.

Mine = 55,500

Spouse = 52,600

We've had HDHP for over 10 years and always contributed the max each year. Always allowed money to accumulate and paid all medical expenses out of pocket. We are planning to us the HSA for Medicare premiums when we are eligible.
Expect the best. Prepare for the worst.

18.4k. Probably had since 2010. I was reimbursing for a few years. The main reason balance isn't higher is that for the last few years I've kept it invested in bonds (though I am debating moving it to stocks since it seems unlikely that I'm not going to be able to come up with enough qualifying expenses before retirement).

I think 2012 was our first year and we're a little over $50K. It's been all TSM the whole time and we haven't spent any of it. Fairly fortunate.

Mine is about $26,000, individual only. I started it around 2009. I've maxed it out every year, except for one year of unemployment and another year when the idiot benefits person who "guided" me through the insurance and other paperwork when I started a new job repeatedly but erroneously insisted that they didn't offer a plan with an HSA; by the time I discovered otherwise it was too late to switch.

I've kept it all in cash earning mediocre returns, but since my cash/fixed income allocation has been below my target I simply counted it towards that asset class. Seeing the numbers in this thread has made me regret doing that a little, though.

$6750. Just opened our first HSA last week with Saturna in my wife's name, since she's in a bronze family HDHP and I'm in a silver plan.

Guess I'm a bit of a slacker. Started in 2006 and only have $47000.

Spent out of it for several years and only started investing it in IJR 2-3 years ago.

Bogleheads got me motivated to invest it although I knew I could before; just never got around to it.

$44,000 or so, have had HSAs over the years, with one year an exemption. Only since reading the Bogleheads book @ 2010 did we start leaving the money in it though; up to then we would mostly spend it down. Now it's our "medical emergency" fund and I might dip into it this year for minor surgery (depending on the bill).

95k - 2008, H
12k- 2008, W (catch-ups)

Started reimbursing in 2014, total at 18k. Monthly reimbursement of LTCi premiums started in 2015 now at $347 per month for two of us. Will start reimbursing for medical insurance premiums and Medicare Part B in the next few years after I hit 65 in Dec 2018. One more year left to go on HDHP/HSA. Figure I’ll exhaust HSAs 20 year’s down the road. Have high dental expenses last few years that have not yet been reimbursed and expect to have hearing aids in the future too.

HSA investments, 80% S&P index type fund; 20% bond fund; 6k in cash/money market.

I don't remember when I started ours. Probably 2012? We didn't put much in those first few years (I wasn't a boglehead). We use it for regular things like eye doctor visits, dentist visits, my wife's ob/gyn visits, had 2 ER visits over the last 5-6 years that took a chunk from it. Despite all that we still have about 10k in there now. This year my wife accidentally signed us up for the regular HMO plan at her work so we haven't been able to contribute. Going back to a high deductible plan this coming year so we'll start putting a lot more in there each year from here on out. They are very useful accounts to have. I wish they'd let us put more in there each year.

I have $0.25 in it. Started contributing in October 2016. Stopped contributing in March 2017. Maxed it (individual) for 2016 and 2017 in those months. Took it all out to pay for a baby's delivery. Accidentally left $0.25 in it.

About 28k. Work insurance switched to HDHP in 2013, the year right after my last was born. We were lucky that the pregnancy cost us $25/visit plus $250 for the whole birth :happy .

Didn't know enough about HSA to max out the first year, and had taken reimbursement to pay for medical visits. We started to cash flow all medical/dental expenses two years ago after becoming more educated about HSA.

Started in 2015, currently have ~10k, all invested in FSTMX. This is the first year I've maxed it out, and it's all thanks to this forum where I learned what an amazing account it is. I'll continue to max it out every year unless unforeseen circumstances pop up, and I'll continue to save receipts and pay out of pocket for all of mine and my childrens health care needs. Thanks bogleheads! :sharebeer

We have about $6000 and started this time last year (2016). Have $1000 in the money market and the rest invested into 3 funds. Plan on maxing out for the unforeseeable future.

Up to 2015 we were covered by my wife's health care program that did not offer an HSA. She retired and we join my medical plan in 2016.
Contributed $5,750.00 and received a $2,000.00 ER match in 2016 for a total of $7,750.00. That was all spend in 2016 covering my wife's medical problems.
In 2017, I will contribute the same along with the same match for a total of $7,750.00. We will have a $2,300.00 balance at the end of 2017 and it probably will all go to an outstanding reimbursement.
Wish we had access to an HSA earlier.

$31,500. I started a HSA in early 2014, and have contributed the family max each year since. It's been invested in Vanguard Total US Stock Market Index Fund the whole time. I haven't withdrawn anything from the HSA for medical expenses and I hope to keep using this as a stealth IRA.

Don't have one. Wasn't an option until recently. Maxed out FSA past two years and spent every penny on medical expenses plus a little. Not sure its worth switching to a HDHP with an HSA. Would have been great in years past before kids when I only ever had preventative care to worry about.

About $5,800. We just started it for 2017 and I sure wish we had signed up a few years ago when it was first available to us. What held me back was fear of large medical bills with the birth of my son, but I bet we would have still come out way ahead nevertheless.

You know, if you tend to spend a good check out of pocket on medical under your current insurance, then an HDHP might still make sense if you start hitting the deductible or max limits.

My employer structures their HDHP so that out of pocket expenses tend to run similarly between conventional and HDHP plans, given varying about of medical expenses incurred.

When my employer started offering it, the insurance administrator sat down with everyone individually and showed what would happen if I stayed in the current plan or changed. My situation was a no brainer, and I have three children. At the time I think I was averaging $900 a year if I had paid everything out of pocket. A lot depends on what the difference is in the plan costs.

Mine since 2005, spouse since 2008. Combined balance is about $135K. Started with TSM but then converted to Balanced at age 55. Gradually reimbursing expenses which are greater than 10 years old.

Work just got it last year, so 3.5 in mine. Wife and i will both max it out as long as we are able going forward. Investment options in the hsa are very limited for us, and high fees (at least by boglehead standards)

I did the math and I pay more than my current deductible but less than the HDHP deductible would be, so overall the HDHP would cost actually cost about $2000-$3000 more a year than staying on my current plan.

I started in 2009 or 2010 - I can't remember and am getting near 6 figures but not quite there. I don' t recall ever pulling money out - just invest.

On a side note, I need to move my HSA accounts. They have always been at Merrill Lynch but last year ML in order to comply with new rules stopped investing the money. So now I have too much cash. They said the older investments - mainly Vanguard funds - can remain, but my broker is no longer allowed to invest in anything any more. They want me to move it to their B of A product where I can invest, but no Vanguard funds are available.

On another thread someone mentioned a place called Lively? I may be off a bit in the name but I think that is close.

Any other good ideas. I'm not overly worried about withdrawal fees (cross my fingers that we stay healthy), but would like low annual fees and I would really like to stick with Vanguard funds for the investments but any low fee index funds I guess would be fine.

Thanks!

$38,000 give or take a few hundred. Now have $10,000 in cash, the rest all in Vanguard Target Date Fund for 2040 (VFORX). Using SelectAccount and am very happy with them.

Started in 2009, maxed it out every year but unfortunately also took distributions to pay medical expenses (mostly related to childbirth and kids injuries). Wish I had paid those all out of pocket instead.

Have enough in expenses over the past four years so that I can take the $10k out at any time and receive it tax free.

About $50-55k. Maybe $40-45k invested and $10k cash. I think I opened it way back in 06 or 07 as an individual account, then it's been family account since maybe 2011. I've always maxed it, or come very close. When single, I pulled almost nothing out of it. Now we use a lot more medical care and I pull as much from it as I can reimburse each year (generally about $3k). I don't trust myself to keep receipts for several decades.
