Best way to make some dollars on a 10 day vacation?

Post by bo105954027 » Tue Oct 17, 2017 10:18 am

Hi Bogleheads,

I am a full time Mechanical (Thermal) Engineer in NJ close to NYC area. Recently I realized I've accumulated plenty of PTOs (around 10 days) that I need to squander this year (expiring end of year). As I have no plan for a travel or trip somewhere, and I am single having nobody to accompany, I think it might be a good chance to work some part time jobs for extra money. The things I've thought of feasible are pretty traditional - waiting tables, delivering foods, Uber or so. I'd like to inquire if Bogleheads have some creative ideas :D By the way, I can easily commute to NYC the busiest city and there might be some interesting chance... My target is making > $100 per day.

Thanks~

If you hang out in the parking lot at Home Depot early in the morning, you can get paid cash for doing work in landscaping or construction or loading trucks or similar.

I'm a (mostly retired) engineer as well. $100/day is close to minimum wage nowadays and there is no way I would do employment at that level.
Also, that additional income will be taxed at your marginal rate, bringing $12/hr down to $8/hr or less.

There have to be more interesting things to do with your time off...

If you can work HVAC systems perhaps arrange a trip to the Caribbean where they will pay you well for your work and you can enjoy your time off.
There are a number of temp agencies that specialize in these types of project placements.

I know people who rent out their home via AirBNB when they go on vacation.

From a pure utility POV, you'd likely be much better off taking those 10 days to invest in yourself - your health, happiness, knowledge, skills, etc.

I would get into walking or boarding dogs. People on Rover charge $10 or so for walking and $25-$30 daily for boarding. Might not get you to $100 daily but good physical activity and fun work.

These require some preparation beforehand, but I would suggest:

Election Judge
Check your local government's website on how to become an election judge. You'll probably have to take a training class first, but once you get trained in you can serve as an election judge for local, state and national elections. Once I served as an election judge, I got paid for the training class along with the actual time I spent on the job. Pay is minimum wage (or slightly higher) unless you work as the head election judge, but you'll likely have to get some experience before you can serve in that position. You can work a half day or full day.

The work is straightforward and easy: help people register to vote, ensure voters sign-in on the correct spot on the voting rolls, give voters their ballots, etc. Outside of a few peak times (i.e. when the poll opens, lunch hour and dinner time), not many voters are coming in so you'll have plenty of time to relax, read a book or chat with the other election judges.

Medical Research
See if the hospitals in your area have a research program you can participate in. I've participated in studies ranging from filling out surveys on my family medical history, answering questions in interviews, giving blood samples and staying overnight to participate in a study. You don't have to suffer from an illness or have a family history of an illness to participate in medical research. Sometimes the doctors want healthy patients to use as a control group. Compensation has varied from me anywhere from $25 to several hundred for the overnight studies.

Unless you are already an expert, perhaps use the time to read a few books on the Bogleheads recommended reading list.

https://www.bogleheads.org/wiki/Books:_ ... nd_reviews

(I haven't scientifically measured the ROI, but I think it's helped me a lot more on my way towards reaching Financial Independence than taking up an Uber gig would have)

I was going to say the same...if you live near NYC then this would be easy. It could also pay for your vacation!

Call an air courier service and offer your services. For the most important packages (same day, escorted) you get a paid RT flight and get paid for your time. You'll sort of play travel roulette and get to see a random destination.

Alternatively, if you'd prefer to work those days at your job, ask your boss whether they'd buy those days back from you. Not recommended. But, often available depending on your team's workload.

If you have a new enough car, I think Uber/Lyft would be good to look into.

Probably some hoops to jump through, but once "in", you simply make yourself available and try to be where the people need rides at.

This nice thing is you wouldn't have to be re-hired if you sporadically do it. I would think you have to maintain some minimums.

Worth checking out.

How do you technically rent your place on airbnb while traveling?
Let's ignore potential problems with landlord and NYC laws, because op in in NJ, and let's assume he owns his place or landlord doesn't care.

In this case, how do you time the airbnb rental so that your vacation is on exact same dates? Do you first find a guest and then leave on the same day after checking them in? What do you do if they need to check out before you plan to return? What do you do if there are unexpected problems with apartment or guests?

Agreed.

I'm not sure if this is 10 days that are just lose/use type days (with a significant bank of leave on the books) vs. this is just your entire 10 days built up for the year and they don't allow you to carry them over?

In either case, the logistics of trying to find employment for a 10 day period seem a bit odd. You mention waiting tables, do you go to an establishment and say you're looking for just 10 days of work, can you hire me? I can't imagine anyone would think it was worth THEIR time to train you, let alone your time. Is it purely a financial situation where you need the extra $1K for the year?

Could you instead not find some charity to donate your time to over the holidays? Could you not spend time and visit family/friends?

Anyhow, enjoy your time off.

I have served as an "Elections officer" for every election and primary for the last ten years. In our jurisdiction, such workers get $170 - but it is a very long day (cannot leave) from 5:00 am until all reports/balancing complete. Polls open at 6:00 and close at 7:00 pm . Depending on the details we usually leave between 8:30 and 9:45 pm. You must, every year, attend a two hour training class (no extra money).

Sell T shirts and trinkets on the beach: Florida, California
Or, go to the Caribbean work the beach and then donate your spare time to rebuilding their homes & infrastructure
Or #2, rebuild and then do the beach
Don't it always seem to go * That you don't know what you've got * Till it's gone

Call up your local Red Cross chapter and see what they require for you to be deployed to a disaster zone (Texas, Florida, No. California fire areas, Puerto Rico???). You need to be available for at least a 2-week period. Your background is a specialty niche and they might be able to use you In a special assignment rather than in a shelter. The currently deployed volunteers will burn out and need to be replaced every two weeks and shelters are expected to be open until at least the end of the year since there are so many who have been displaced.

Although you won't make any money, you will feel good about helping out after a disaster. It will be a special life experience that won't cost you any money, just your time.

Just because he has no current plans doesn't mean that an idea involving travel would not be interesting. This is a brainstorming session - keep everything on the table.

There is so much going on in and around NYC that this shouldn't be hard, but it is a matter of what you want to do. I would think a mechanical engineer would be capable of making much greater than $100 a day. Any chance you could work at a competitor or similar company in your career field in a temp basis? Do you have practical experience working on or maintaining equipment similar to what you design/engineer? That practical hands on work may be easier to find. I like the idea of a free cruise for working on their equipment, but I don't know how realistic that idea is.

You could also get a lot of house work done in 10 days with a few big projects complete that may be a better use of your time. Doing the work yourself could be just as good as making money and paying someone else to do those projects.

Finally, you can do a lot for yourself such as reading, exercise, and professional development that may be the best option.

You are single and in NYC, there must be a lot places where the girls are, find interesting ones and do extra dating, spend some money on them.

So rather than make money as was indicated, spend money instead? You know, not everyone likes to travel.

A thousand bucks huh? I bet you could spend a few hours each morning optimizing your bills/expenditures - cutting the fat or renogotiating - and end up with savings over $1k over the course of the year.

Then spend another hour every day exercising. And another hour reading bogleheads.

You'd still have the half of each day free for whatever hobbies keep you mentally healthy.

Be like a machine getting these done each day for your vacation, and it will be way more valuable than driving Uber for 10 days.

Or call GLG and ask to be added to their expert network as a mechanical engineer with expertise in X. Google this for details.

I was just in Chicago where I took uber. The driver used to be in the management position and now drives for Uber and Lyft. He said he makes between $200 and $250 a day. I forgot to ask him how many hours. But I calculated in my head afterwards to be about 8 hrs a day.

I agree! Hankering after more money defeats the very purpose of vacation.

OP, if you want a tongue in cheek answer: Try panhandling. It really pays. Based on observation, I've calculated an hourly "income" for panhandlers that exceeds - I kid you not - my hourly salary in my full-time job!

Why not do something you would otherwise pay someone to do? Paint your house, change your water heater, trim your trees, replace the brakes on your car, smoke some meat rather than buying barbeque, etc. Anything you would normally pay someone else to do?

Don't rule out taking a solo vacation. When I was single I took a couple of solo trips and had a good time. I found that I met and talked with a lot more people than I normally do when I am traveling with someone.

Rental car companies have dirt cheap rental cars for one way trips into Florida so you could take a road trip down there and then fly back.

For more structure there are week long classes on crafts and hobbies that you could go to but those are often not inexpensive so I don't know if they would fit into your budget.

I don't think you would do a good job, though, as you seem to be ignoring the time for surface prep such as power washing and waiting for the surface to dry.

I could paint two houses in 10 days. $5k per house, easy $10k. :beer
I don't think you would do a good job, though, as you seem to be ignoring the time for surface prep such as power washing and waiting for the surface to dry.
I do a great job - just ask my wife! A week is easily enough time to paint a house.

Two weeks in another country is great.
For you maybe. For me that would awful.
Why, may I ask?

Is it going two weeks solo, or two weeks somewhere new that is the awful bit?

I'd recommend driving Uber or Lyft, or UberEats, where you just deliver food. I'm also single, and I find that it's a good way to meet people, and as an engineer, you might enjoy the mental challenges, like figuring out routes, looking for promising ride areas, seeing where other drivers are at and avoiding oversaturated spots. It also makes your mileage tax-deductible, as well as things like car maintenance and even the portion of a phone bill used for driving, so the taxes on your earnings could be largely negated by deductions. I've had great conversations as a driver and a lot of fun, and it gets me out of the house and gives me a lot of the challenges and benefits of work without the drawbacks, like set hours or a boss or being confined in an office.

I don't like traveling, period. It's an uncomfortable experience.

Come to CT. I'll give you $100 to rake leaves for a day. You can even use my leaf blower.

No... it does one or the other, but not both.

Become a professional cuddler or pet food taster.
I'm not sure how humans could be useful food tasters for pets since we have typically have major gaps in quality of senses compared to pets. Cats for instance have a far superior sense of smell to humans and are thereby more likely to judge the quality of food by its smell then by its taste.

I'm also not keen on traveling, especially flying. I don't have a fear of flying, but rather I dislike the long waits in the airport and being crammed in an airplane for hours on end.

I agree. To claim both forms of tax deductions would be like claiming the standard deduction and itemized deductions on your income taxes.

If I lived in your area I would probably take you up on your offer. Do you have an insane amount of leaves in your yard or something? :P

If you have 10 days you could complete a course or certification that would make you more competitive or increase your salary. For example, PMP training could be crammed into 10 business days or you could take the Dale Carnegie Course. You might even get your current employer to pay for the training if you put in the time.

I echo others saying to find ways to enjoy yourself or invest in yourself. Or make friends or go on dates since you are alone!

You're talking about adding income while you work for less than 3% of one year. That's not going to make a big difference. Also keep in mind that if you're making ~$100/day, you're earning essentially minimum wage while being taxed at your normal rate, which is probably higher than everyone else working for minimum wage.

But if you must, I like the house painting idea.

sign up for medical or psych experiments?
I have done a few focus groups. Usually $150-200 cold hard cash to talk with people in a room. Actually not a bad way to meet people, either. Once I got paid $200 to talk about beer for two hours and be fed snacks during that time. Other than Vegas, it's probably the most pleasant way I've made $200.

Why not do something you would otherwise pay someone to do? Paint your house, change your water heater, trim your trees, replace the brakes on your car, smoke some meat rather than buying barbeque, etc. Anything you would normally pay someone else to do?
Not a bad idea. It's still work, although the amount you make (save) might be higher than $100/day. Changing brakes is pretty easy, and you can look that stuff up online easily these days.
