USAA Auto Insurance Increase
USAA Auto Insurance Increase
Just received an email telling me my USAA auto insurance premium will be increased nearly 15% due to "industry wide trends". I'm wondering if anyone else has received this notification?

Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
I have USAA and have not.
For the record, I have been "playing" with my auto insurance while preparing for a move to another state. Just last week discovering the $10 "discount" for automatic payments.
Acknowledging baliktad's point below. Edit to add: Covered under United Services Automobile Association as a currently active duty senior NCO. Have been insured with USAA for approximately 10 years. Have had a financial relationship with them for approximately 15 years.

Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
My United Services Automobile Association semi-annual auto renewal policy just came yesterday and the price did not increase. Have been with USAA for all insurances since 1961 and had excellent claim payments for the two no-fault accidents in those 57 years.

With USAA for 35 years - no such notice.
Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
My understanding is USAA has different risk pools. We are in the mature retired officer pool and have been with USAA for 35 years. I think that helps.

Same understanding here and some of it indicated by this post: viewtopic.php?p=3507054#p3411462
One inaccuracy to the linked list is senior NCOs fall into the upper tier.
Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
33 years for me with USAA and I don't believe I have ever received any notice like that

Any discussion of USAA insurance is incomplete without specifying the 'tier' of insurance subscribed to. See the post above for descriptions. Check your insurance card or billing statement to find your tier.brokendirtdart wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2017 1:12 pmSame understanding here and some of it indicated by this post: viewtopic.php?p=3507054#p3411462

I have auto insurance through USAA CIC, which just increased 14%. Property insurance through USAA GAR which is up for renewal at the end of the year.
Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
Soon to be ex-wife got a similar notice on her (formerly our) house. Insurance went up like 40%. The real reason in that instance is with the impending divorce she was moved from the risk pool that I qualified for into a lower (status) one. She has since moved to Amica which is even cheaper than what we had been paying USAA for a number of years prior (and before the recent increase).
USAA is great but the lower your tier in the hierarchy (see link posted above) the more likely you can do better elsewhere.
Edit to add policy went from CIC to GAR with the increase. Also I should add no increase for me on auto so far this year nor my renters insurance.

Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
I've only ever had GAR (grandfather had actual USAA, and my parents have CIC...), and I've always found my rates to better than anything elsewhere - both in California and Arizona. Arizona is more expensive than California though for whatever reason. I will note that I've been with USAA via Garrison for 7 years now and Garrison has yet to issue a policy dividend.baliktad wrote: ↑Sat Aug 26, 2017 1:21 pmAny discussion of USAA insurance is incomplete without specifying the 'tier' of insurance subscribed to. Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
We are USAA CIC, and no rate increase yet, but we're only halfway through our current 6-month policy. Since we tend to ignore the tons of emails from USAA (we have lots of separate policies), thank you for bringing this to our attention. We will go onto full alert by late October or early November.

Re: USAA Auto Insurance Increase
Notices tend to go out with semi-annual renewals. Mine went up about 10%. However, in checking prices, it is still considerably lower than other companies.
In discussing insurance pricing when getting quotes, I was advised that all the safety gear that has been added to cars in the last few years in causing an increase in the severity of typical accidents. A new windshield which has a camera must be "aligned" so that it produces correct responses for the computer. This can increase the cost to replace a W/S by more than $1000.
So, even though the safety gear prevents collisions, those that occur cost a lot more to fix.

A question sparked by another thread:
If you switch your USAA insurance policy to another firm, could you lose your eligibility for your current level of membership?
I've been USAA CIC (father was Army officer) for 40-some years now. We have bank accounts at USAA as well.
If we feel we have to go rate shopping, I wouldn't want to get dropped to a lower tier.

I don't see why you would.bayview wrote: ↑Sun Aug 27, 2017 5:45 pmA question sparked by another thread:
