Capital One 360 $200 bonus (and now $300 checking bonus)

Post by whodidntante » Sun Mar 05, 2017 11:41 am

I've posted a few times that I seek out new account bonuses. This is the latest one I did. A lot of the bonuses I earn have bill pay, direct deposit, or spending requirements. However this one pays $200 for a 10k deposit, so it's easy to complete. Read the terms.

https://www.capitalone.com/bank/strong200/

You can also find this same promo summarized elsewhere on the net, google it.

I opened this account last Thursday. The $10k drew from my external account this Monday, posted Tuesday morning, and the $200 bonus posted this afternoon.

What's really making me smirk is that I immediately linked the MMA to my Capital One credit card and submitted a $200 payment. Yes yes yes... I could get 1% annual interest for several weeks without losing the grace period, but this amuses me more than the value to me of eking out every penny.

How long must one keep the 10k in the account? The fine print didn't seem to impose any limitations.

Just funded this. I would also like to know how long I need to keep it there before moving it back to ally?

I was going to gripe about Capital One being more interested in attracting new short term customers than paying competitive interest rates to the long term customers responsible for the deposits they actually depend on to generate ongoing revenue.

Then I noticed that link says 1% interest in the fine print. Really? I just checked my balance yesterday and it still said 0.75%.

It seems I missed a fundamental change in my account somewhere along the way.

I opened it years ago when it was ING. It was an FDIC-insured money market account. They apparently at some point downgraded me to a lower-paying savings account. :annoyed

The saving account rate is 0.75%. The Money Market is 0.60% for balances below $10,000, 1% for balances $10,000 and over.

I have in writing (via Facebook messenger chat with Capital One rep) that there is no take-back on the bonus; I can reduce my balance below $10k at any time. Specifically, I asked about opening a CD with $1k and immediately transferring the other $9k back out to get better interest than 0.6%

FYI, the offer language specifically excludes anyone who had an ING savings account. Call toll free number listed on promo and they will check whether you had one with your social - takes 5 minutes. I was glad that I did this as it turned out that I had one years ago.

Yep. I've read they hold the money for 10-14 days and then you can take it all back. Close account. $200 richer in just a few weeks.

So,
You pay taxes on this $200 as Misc. income?
And
Can you open accounts for husband and wife separately?

Got my answers by surfing some more.

1. yes on taxes
2. yes can open more than one account

But,
new question -
can I open accounts with kids names? and what happens to their bonuses ? Do they have to file taxes or are these bonus to be under parents?

Wow, fine print says 6-8 weeks to receive the bonus.

I opened the account either last 3/15 or 3/16, which took all of maybe 2 minutes as I already had a dormant CapitalOne CC. The funds posted yesterday, 3/22, and show they will be "fully available" by next Tuesday, 3/28. Hopefully, the $200 will post on that date as well. I'm thinking of leaving the $10K in there anyway as I transferred it from my Ally MM which earns only .85 versus the 1% in the CapOne 360 (although Ally compounds daily and I don't think CapOne 360 does).

Concurrently, I took advantage of the WFB checking account offer, opened an account with $25 via my Citi 2% cash back card, completed the required 10 debit transactions yesterday, and am waiting for the $250 bonus offer to post there. I also just received my BOA travel CC card and will earn $200 after spending $1K on planned travel in May. Love all this free money!

I was surprised to say the least. I felt guilty about deciding to take the whole opening deposit out again, so I gave Capital One a cookie by opening a 5 Year CD with 1/10 of it before transferring the other 9/10 back to Ally. I selected 'better interest elsewhere' as the reason for closing the account, which is actually true since the balance was $9k instead of $10k.

Ally Online Savings pays 1%. Ally MMA is only useful if you absolutely need a debit card directly attached to the account holding the cash.

Well I pulled the trigger too. The 1% is better than I'm currently getting and the $200 was enough of a carrot.

just FYI, the $200 may be included on your 1099-INT. I opened a Discover online savings account for the $100 bonus offer earlier this year, and during the sign-up it specifically noted that the bonus funds would appear as interest on the 1099-INT. Didn't see that during the CONA 360 sign-up, but it's a possibility.

I did one of these last year with Cap360 and got a 1099-INT. My wife did this bonus and got the $200 in a week. I've started to pursue these and they really aren't too bad. I can easily split up my payroll direct deposit to go to different banks via online request, so meeting the Direct Deposit requirements for checking account bonuses is fairly simple. Though there are articles on how to trigger the direct deposit requirements, via bank ACH or PayPal opposed to payroll.

This site has a great summary of all current bank bonuses, gold mine of information.

Thanks.
I signed up for 2 accounts, quite simple and this is my first foray into chasing bonuses............hope it works out. Even after taxes, it feels like free money to me.

Thanks for the link.
Way too much good information.
I will need to pick and choose.
I have done 2 accounts for Capital360 and one for Wells Fargo.

In the last two months have opened:

2 Chase = $600
2 Wells Fargo = $500
2 Santander = $450
2 Cap One = $400

Total of $1950

It does take a bit of work, especially to make them fee free, but it is worth it.

Wow, impressive haul!

I just opened my 360 account. Couldn't transfer funds from Fidelity for some reason, some automated security bot said the names on the accounts didn't match. I'll run it through my BofA account instead which has worked will with external transfers before.

Just learned something frustrating. My bank only allows $2500 to be transferred per day. So my plan is going to take more time. Bank is a credit union, maybe a regulation for all credit unions?

I have decided that managing short term gains doesn't work for me.

It may be because as I focus on a 20 to 30 year strategy I do not have or choose not to have enough time to keep all the balls in the air. I appreciate those who win with this strategy, and I know that I am in the minority on this thread. The tortoise..ah well fugettaboutit. I am only one.

Agreed - So, to be clear, I am far too busy with work and home/kids to do all this bonus chasing. I was up last night and 'felt' like doing this and just did it. Not sure if I will keep doing it. I have some money saved for a new SUV but waiting for a better price (drop) as I do not need the new car right away. So I am using that money to chase these bonuses. Otherwise, the money would have ended up quickly as per my ISP, to my taxable accounts.

I'm surprised that you open all these accounts, but have somehow managed to never have had an ING/Cap1 bank account over all these years. (People who've ever had one, can't get the bonus, :-( )

I'm new to churning and I don't open an account without a reason. A nice bonus is sufficient reason.

The limit is from the specific institution -- I have been able to transfer larger amounts with BECU.

I monitor Doctor of Credit and jump on the most lucrative deals right away. I also keep an eye out as I pass banks to see if they are advertising something. I do credit cards, savings accounts, brokerages, and checking accounts. You can also earn a little on referrals if you work with someone.

I'm in the same boat, banks and credit unions have all kinds of silly limits for transferring funds. I got a cashier's check and walked to my other bank.

Just learned something frustrating. My bank only allows $2500 to be transferred per day. So my plan is going to take more time. Bank is a credit union, maybe a regulation for all credit unions?

I'm in the same boat, banks and credit unions have all kinds of silly limits for transferring funds. I got a cashier's check and walked to my other bank.

I'll be doing that. too. Drat.

Tried to sign up today but got an error. Had to call and I had forgotten that I had an ING savings account long ago. Closed it something like 10+ years ago and long forgotten. Nope, can't get the $200 bonus. Oh well.

I had an account years ago but I went for it anyway. Even if I don't get the bonus 1% ain't bad compared to other options. I will update here if/when I get it.

It appears this is a targeted promotion as I could not get it to work for me.

It does take a bit of work, especially to make them fee free, but it is worth it.

I'm expecting to haul in $2,870 for Q1, just for myself. It's a profitable hobby! Happy hunting!

Wow, that is a nice number. I need to look into this further. Any other websites for more information?
Thanks

I monitor Doctor of Credit and jump on the most lucrative deals right away. I also keep an eye out as I pass banks to see if they are advertising something. I do credit cards, savings accounts, brokerages, and checking accounts. You can also earn a little on referrals if you work with someone.

Ok,

My list at present is;
2 Cap360 =$400
2 Wells Fargo =$500
2 Pinnacle = $200
Total = $1100

I need some time to figure out which other ones are worth it. Redirecting direct deposit may be difficult.

I've been hesitant to do bank bonuses because of taxation. Credit card deals are so much better because they're higher often and don't get taxed. Plus I hate shuffling money around from my accounts with the bank bonuses and having it tied up. I also hate how you have to wait longer for the bonus. I did do Wells Fargo x 2 and have no regrets.

Please go ahead and tell me about which credit card deals did you get recently. Any other websites to recommend? I am learning!

Heads up to anyone still thinking of this offer:
- The offer expires 3/31/17
- CapOne 360 uses the "two small deposits" method of authenticating your external checking account. This could take a couple business days.
- They only allow checking accounts to be linked, not savings, brokerage or money market accounts (from the small print when linking my account)

It may be possible to link different accounts externally via "push" rather than "pull" from the 360 side.

OK, so I signed up for the Capital One 360 account and $200 bonus and am waiting for funds to transfer from an external account.

The signup process was easy--in fact too easy in the sense that nowhere was I prompted to set up security questions or 2FA. Nor was I informed about the SwiftID feature (which I found out about by googling) that's supposed to be a form of 2FA. I installed the Cap One app and activated SwiftID but am not getting push notifications so that I can authorize log-in (I'm able to log in without authorizing).

Oh, I also notice that once signed in (on Chrome), the padlock icon in the browser's address bar is replaced by a "circle+i" icon which according to Chrome means that the page is not secure. (It is https not http on that page, though.)

What gives? I'm having second thoughts about Cap One, with regard to account security.

How did you do this? I think you may need an offer code or have this offer e-mailed to you?

From what I understand it is a public offer. I did not need an offer code. There is a $400 checking offer out there that DOES need a code.

At least you're able to access the website. Not sure about anyone else, but I've been hitting an error page the last couple of days when trying to access my new account (on Chrome).
