Vanguard Web Site Down?

Postby Leesbro63 » Fri Feb 17, 2017 9:24 am

I cannot get into Vanguard on two different devices with two different internet connections. Is it me?

Also can't get in.

However, oddly, "is it down" shows the Vanguard site is *up*.
Haven't seen that happen before (showing "up" when can't get in).

Vanguard's front page is up. It's the back-end account pages that are down. That probably throws off Is It Down?

Agree, front page is up, the can not log on, hence it's down. So much for technology when you can't access your own money! :annoyed Time to invest some more money in data backup centers and cloud computing........

Could be a DOS attack, in which case all the investment in backup solutions would not do much.

Vanguard has every incentive to make sure the site is up and running, they don't want our phone calls !

Ah, yes.

I was trying to refresh a page with a link to my account.
Trying to get to "Vanguard.com" worked, but not past that.

THIS is why we will always have accessible funds in at least two different institutions.
(Not just "Vanguard", of course. Tech problems can - and will - happen anywhere, eventually.)
It's less of a problem, although still a problem at times, for retirement accounts.
But for accounts one might need to access for day to day activities/bills/etc., this could be a problem if it isn't resolved promptly.

They are spending all their time and money on a new research center in Philly, why don't you first fix the problems you have with technology - you know, the real face of the company?? Business 101 - it takes a lifetime to earn the trust of your customers, it takes 5 minutes to lose it - well, several more times of website going down and you'll quickly find out how fast $4 trillion of assets can leave...........low expenses or not, nothing gets the attention of people faster than the thought they have zero access to their accounts and money.

So now, you get past the first screen only to see a screen saying "We apologize for the inconvenience" - Your account information is temporarily unavailable, please give us a call  Anyone try to get through to them by phone?

Now you can log in but account info not available. What a freaking joke...the day before a three day weekend and at market open.

This is poor. They need an IT overhaul.

Vanguard seems to have gone off the grid

Postby magellan » Fri Feb 17, 2017 10:01 am

In case anyone else is experiencing problems, it seems that for the last hour or so Vanguard's login portal has been down and their main phone number just rings and rings, or it abruptly disconnects.

Their twitter feed is silent on the issue, but a twitter search yields lots of complaints from unhappy clients experiencing problems.

I also can not see my data.
At first, I could not login in, then I was able to log in, but a message comes at giving various phone numbers to call, depending on what type of account you have.
Yesterday, when logging in, my access number that they send by text to complete the login did not arrive for an hour or more.
Maybe $4trillion is more than their computers can handle.

Assume the market is down 40%, still fine with it? The point is, the most valuable, the most intrinsic worth of Vanguard is not the low expense ratio, it's the service and in this day and age, technology whether you like it or don't, is the main gate to it. It's like saying "we're open for business, but we can't open the drawbridge to your account". How ridiculous does that look? I'm going to start buying more tech stock because I see there is pent up demand for more IT services.

I was able to enter my username and password, and I reached the screen to enter my security code. I provided the code, but the page hung at that point. After a couple of minutes a dialog box popped up asking if I wanted to cancel. I said no. After a couple more minutes, I got in.

To me the inexcusable part is that their phone lines aren't working and their twitter feed is completely silent.

Downtime can happen to anyone, especially if they're the target of a DOS attack or something.

However, a competently run operation wouldn't have gone incommunicado for over an hour during the event.

I had split my $ between Fido and Vanguard just for this reason. Then last year I combined it all into Vanguard.
Maybe not such a good idea. I will give them this one, but if it happens again, I guess I will take half back to Fidelity.

Man, I remember when I got my account updates by reading my statement that was mailed to me once a month. My contributions were mailed in by check. I could send instructions by letter. It was really cool when I could change money between accounts by calling an automated phone system (they called it telephone switching.)

If they don't respond to letters, I'd get concerned. I already have a problem with checking the balance on my mutual funds multiple times a day (no, it didn't change -- it's only updated once a day.)

If you really have to place a trade, give them a call. Or send a letter.

Vanguard site is down after login. Phone calls are either not answered or answered by a dysfunctional autobot, like something out of a sci-fi movie. I trust they have some seriously good IT folks there.

It is one thing to have a site down but yet another to not take calls. Unacceptable.

I am online but not the site does not let you make trades and I have been on hold with vanguard for 30 min now.

I just tried logging in, and as of 10:13 a.m. Eastern Standard Time, I'm in and looking at my accounts and everything looks correct, including "Account Activity" entries for last night's transactions.

By the way I'm not trying to be a Vanguard cheerleader or anything like that. At the moment the site seems to be up and working for me. Based on forum postings and making all the usual allowances I'm beginning to think that Vanguard's customer support and IT have likely not been keeping pace with their growth, they almost said so themselves in some news story about their breaking $4 trillion. But so far I have not personally experienced it.

I sometimes get the impression that there are different categories of accounts that experience different glitches, e.g. the accounts that have been "upgraded" may be on a different IT system, so one bunch of people can be saying "yes, me too" and another bunch can be saying "no problem for me."

There was one weird thing about last night's transactions, a seemingly irrelevant email about an "account change confirmation," I just called giving "security" as the topic, got through in two minutes by the stopwatch, had a semi-satisfactory conversation--rep can't explain why this particular transaction generated this particular weird "confirmation" but neither of us believes it's really a security problem.

Well, I'm not fine with it. When reporters asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks he replied: "Because that's where the money is"

Today, Vanguard is "where the money is" and they really better get up to speed with improving the "teller windows". Their site has to be THE premier target for hackers and as a customer I've been getting a tad nervous.
