Unfortunately it's only the disk version, and unless I buy anything else, have to add shipping. But thanks for the update!

Is this a good deal? Aren't there online sites like TaxAct/Turbo where you can file for free?

Thanks for the heads up! Fortunately, I had another item that I have wanted to order which was also under the limit for free shipping. When I combined them in one order, I was eligible.

Some of the online free versions only let you use some forms and might have income limits.. 30 for turbotax without state is a decent price for that version, which should cover most anyones forms. (the higher versions of turbotax have guided navigation that they try to sell you on).

Thanks. Just signed up and got my scores for free, they must have changed their business model.

I paid $5 last year when H&R Block went on very deep discount. Any chance that it happens again?

BTW it's only $22.48 for Deluxe w/o State.

Thanks for posting. If I had waited a couple days I would have saved fifteen bucks on my Amazon purchase of Turbotax premier. I guess this is one of the reasons I am not an Amazon groupie/cheerleader.

For me Costco.com is showing $39.99 after $10 off, so $49.99 - $10 = $39.99. :(

Amazon will price match in 7 days. Also price match with your credit card for double the difference back.

Amazon has price protection. You might be able to get the price difference refunded.

Amazon sent me an email that they do not do post purchase price adjustments except for TV's.
I did manage to cancel the order at the higher price and reorder at the lower price and saved $15. I will review the links provided in this thread for more information. Appreciate the boglehead input.

You are correct. Amazon discontinued its price protection earlier this year in response to a number of automated apps/processes out there that have helped the average customer "save too much money." Only applies to televisions now.

TurboTax Deluxe + state now below $40 at Amazon

Post by Norton750 » Wed Dec 28, 2016 7:21 pm

As has happened for each of the past few years, on December 28 (today) Amazon has dropped the price for the TT Deluxe + state disk version some $10 to $39.86. I haven't checked, but this same drop is often seen at Costco, etc. at the same time.

I set a CamelCamelCamel alert on TT every year and December 28 has been the date the past few years.

Amazon spokesperson quoted in WSJ after the so called "change in policy" stated that their policy on price matching had not changed, that it was never their policy to do it, but that individual exceptions had been made in the past and will continue to be made in the future.

So, might be worth a try if you are so inclined.

Amazon will be having a "digital deals" day on Friday, which promises up to 50% off on both TurboTax and H&R Block. Of course, the key phrase there is "up to"... so no guarantees of deep deals coming on Friday.

BrandonBogle - The previous poster was talking about Deluxe without state. It's $29.99. You're talking about Deluxe with state. it's $39.99.

ddunca1944 - Why were you charged shipping? It claims to have free shipping on the website. Perhaps you're confusing the sales tax with shipping?

Good Listener -- it's in the sale flyer that starts next week in-store. Obviously they started it early online. Not sure if it's also started early in-store.

I just happened to make a Costco run this evening. $29/$39 in-store for Deluxe Fed/Fed+State.

I just use my Discover Card. It has 90 day price protection. All you need is a screenshot or copy of an ad of the lower price.

I use CamelCamelCamel to set up price watches on the more expensive items I already purchased. If it hits a certain price drop, I take a screenshot and submit a claim.

I just got $49 back on a basketball hoop I bought for the kids for Christmas.

Plus I get 5% back this quarter on Amazon purchases!

I was at Costco this afternoon and, as reported by others, there was a $10 manufacturer's rebate on TT Deluxe w/state. I asked a manager about whether the coupon would be an additional reduction. He wasn't sure but thought it might be. What do you think?

It's impossible to know. Last Jan I was sure they'd drop the price further into the tax season. Instead, the product disappeared from the shelves. I'm gonna buy at Costco on 5th unless Amazon has a better price.

I did some more poking around. I need Premier, haven't been following Deluxe. And I want a disk - not gonna do it online. Local Costco has Premier at around $70. On 05 Jan it will be $15 off "while supplies last" (two weeks ago they didn't have Premier, but it's back on their shelf now). That will make it about $55 +/- a few cents. Amazon has it for that price now, sold by Intuit. But you can't get it at TT's site for that price.

Costco online has it right now for $54.86 plus tax. Shipping/Handling included, 7 days for delivery. I took the plunge, no more shopping for a good deal or worrying that it would be on the shelf next week. That is about what I paid last year for a used copy off of eBay.

The only better deal I found, which I don't qualify for, is at Fidelity where it is free for the right group of customers. I'm not in that group, so I can get it for $79.99 less $15 linked from Fidelity (or Vanguard). Such a deal. I'll pass. That $15 is for Premier, not sure which of the products qualifies for $20 off.

Strike while the iron is hot.

It easily handles rental real estate including depreciation.
Deluxe can be used for this but it's a bit more work.
So personal preference.

If you search for "TurboTax Web Discounts", you can find a Fidelity link offering $25 Basic, $40 Premier, and $70 Self-Employed, if you don't want to get the physical box. The Fidelity link claims you don't need to be a Fidelity customer to use it. It worked for me just now.

Just AARGH.
I bought TT last night on Amazon with the sale.
Today. TODAY! my fido account suddenly has a free Turbotax premier offer. It was not there Friday afternoon.

Did you order the download version? If you can't get a refund from Amazon, Turbotax offers a money back guarantee, so you should be able to get it from them.

I'm not aware of any rebate. Are you sure you weren't confusing the way they show the discount when an item is on sale (they consider it manufacturer's so sales tax is charged on the regular price).

The total discounted price for Turbotax Deluxe w/ state is $39.86. That includes the $10 rebate off the normal price of $49.86. Costco just sent an email out to customers that confirms this.

The website says "$10 manufacturer’s discount is valid 12/28/16 through 1/29/17. "

It's an in-store/online discount, not a rebate (which implies having to mail something to get your money).

Yes, it is a discount but not an in-store one. You can also get it on-line with free shipping. I was just using the prior poster's "rebate" terminology.

If you have Amazon Prime and have previously taken advantage of the "$1 digital credit for slower shipping" option on orders, those apply against the download version.

Made me realize I had $34 in those slow ship credits.

"Not an in-store one"? That can't be right. The in-store price is the same as the online price. The $10-15 comes off as a manufacturer's coupon and is taxable in all states except the few where coupons are not taxable (CT, PA, a few others) and where there is no sales tax (DE, others).

The previous poster who said there was a rebate was talking like it was different from the coupon (in fact he said he asked someone if the coupon was in addition to the rebate). So I just wanted to clarify that there is a single discount and it comes off immediately when you make the purchase.

Oh for heaven's sake -- it's the same price in the store and on-line. Your previous comment calling it an "in-store discount" made it sound as if the discount was only available in the physical store. I was clarifying that it's available in the store and on-line, but now you've muddied it up again.

Interesting. Clicking on the link shows you the lower price when you checkout the price is changed (higher price).

EDIT: Interesting! I use incognito mode and it shows the right price at checkout.
