ADT raising rates - should I cancel?

Post by new2bogle » Thu Dec 08, 2016 11:13 am

ADT sent out a notice that they are raising rates by about $3/month, not a big deal, total monthly bill will go up to about $55 after taxes. The contract states that I have the right to try to cancel the contract if there is any rate change (according to the contract, ADT can either waive the increase and not cancel the contract, or outright cancel it if they don't waive the fee increase).

I'll write to them in any case to see if they waive the fee increase, but should I cancel monitoring? I need some sort of active monitoring due to sporadic break-ins in my neighborhood (looks like the thieves are somehow targeting homes that they know have a lot of jewelry and that's pretty much all they steal - how they know this information is still a mystery).

If they agree to canceling contract (I am half way through a 3 year contract) is there a cheaper active monitoring option that you guys use?

I have found ADT difficult to deal with and their long-term contracts are notoriously difficult to get out of. If you have the opportunity, I would take advantage of it. While there are other national firms, I have found that a local company provides service at least as good. Typically, any company can utilize your existing ADT equipment with minor, if any, updates/upgrades (although you may wish to consider newer features such as cell phone arming/disarming and security cameras, if you don't have those features currently).

Talk to your neighbors and see who they use, or look for signs on your neighbors' lawns. I entered a one-year agreement with a local company about 3 years ago so am now month-to-month although they have not increased my pricing. The market seems to be fairly competitive here and that seems to deter price increases.

Keep your ADT yard signs and stickers, but look at something like Simplisafe. It's cheaper, more customizable, and comes with no contract.

I'm paying less than half that for a local monitoring company. I've seen companies like alarm relay that charge around $9 but never got around to checking them out.

Thanks guys. I think per my contract at the minimum I should be able to get the $3 increase knocked off. Then 18 months left if they don't want to terminate the contract.

I would definitely call vs. writing a letter. If you say you want to cancel they will no doubt transfer you to a "customer retention specialist". This person is ready to bargain to keep you as a customer. Tell them you found a comparable service for $40, and chances are they will simply offer to renew your contract at $40. It's amazing how many companies operate like this now, and always worth a try.

Did exactly that. Cut the landline, cut ADT. Went with Simplisafe & Ooma. Better coverage on security and as good or better phone. Saving $50 a month. Covered my equipment costs in 10 months.

If you own the equipment I would make the switch. I dealt with ADT for many years prior to retiring. There are much better and less expensive firms out there.

some cultures (Hmong for example) are known to favor keeping valuables (cash etc) in their home versus a bank account. Takes one mention by someone in a crowd (at work etc) and one becomes a target through word of mouth.

Home security - seems like this is something a homeowner could do on their own these days (?).....the equipment would be a one time investment. with everything WIFI....dunno. Not sure of the point of an ADT panel one has to push buttons on (then they call police) when one has a cell phone. Seems redundant.

Google 'alarm monitoring'. There are plenty that charge around $10/mo.

I'm considering purchasing an abode security starter kit:

DIY - $0/month, with flexible monitoring plans. Any Bogleheads have experience with this?

This is an industry that I have been in a senior management position for over the past eight years. If you like your current service with ADT, do not call them and argue the price increase. Instead, call and say that you are going to switch companies. When you do this, they will lower your monthly rate and the discount will be much more than the $3 they just raised you. I see this literally every single day (non-ADT employee).

As far as choosing a different company, just from professional experience and what I have seen in the field, please stay far away from local companies or a DIY system. Local companies outsource their monitoring so you may be paying Company XYZ thinking they are monitoring you, but it's actually subcontracted company ABC.

From a DIY standpoint, you install the system and pay a company to monitor you. Do the research and look at the equipment hacks and always realize if someone does break in and the alarm does not work properly, you are at fault because you installed it. And I hate to say it, but security systems have issues frequently, whether you install it yourself or a company does a professional installation. I would at least want the company on the hook if there was an issue and it could not be blamed on user error.

I completely understand not wanting a contract and wanting to pay the lowest rate out there, but you really do get what you pay for just like in other purchases. Major players have an industry standard of 36 month agreement. Google 2016 SDM 100 Rankings and it will rank the various companies out there in case you want a few other names to talk to. Hope this helps.

Kick ADT out and get AlarmRelay.com for $8/month. They provide the same service works with existing equipment.

We have ADT as well. If you would prefer to stay with them, the very threat of leaving will force them to reduce their monthly rate. Wow! $55 per month? We pay just half that. Of course, I'm sure it is very dependent upon the rates of other competitors operating in your area. Find out what other companies charge and throw that figure at them. You will be surprised to see how much they are willing to come down. Good luck.

I did, and never looked back. This move helped me save more when I was younger. The last time I signed a contract for home security, it included fire, smoke, flood, and invasion. The company service was fine. I never had a false alarm. Less than half the monthly rate. Free equipment also, with wireless batteries covered under contract. They came out twice and changed out batteries. $12 a month for service monitoring. I kept them honest about their rates, by reminding them I'd stop that revenue stream, costing them $0. It works. :beer

It might be cheaper to leave your door unlocked. But then I live a Spartan lifestyle.

+1 for comments by cjhud32. I worked in this industry for many years and what was said is accurate. In my experience some of the larger established local firms located in major markets MAY still own their own monitoring stations, however they are few and far between. One advantage of a local monitoring station is that they are familiar with the area and the AHJ's (Authority having Jurisdiction). An example would be if you live in California and ADT's monitoring station is in Colorado............

I was with ADT for several years until my rate crossed $50. At that time I thought this was highway robbery. I switched and shaved it down to $30. When I called to cancel, of course they were willing to lower the rate. But overall I just wasn't happy w/ the system and the consistent price increases so I had to leave. It's great to have options! Make the call.
