Re: IRS IP PIN [Identity Protection PIN]
Thanks for the alert. As a federal employee subject to the OPM data breach, I sent letters to the IRS last year explaining my risk for identity theft and seeking a way to get an IP PIN. I got written response back that I am approved to register for an IP PIN, but the IP PIN webpage was not working for months. So now that the webpage is working again, I have tried to register but it is failing me. It says you have to have a mobile phone registered in your name to which you will be sent a message. I had answered a question affirmatively that I had a mobile phone, but it does not ask for the number at that point. It wants a financial account numbers to verify with Equifax. The first one I gave them, my mortgage account number, did not work. So I gave a credit card number (only asks for last 8 digits) and it did not work either and shut down the process and says I cannot try again for another 24 hours. I also believe the webpage said it will be looking for a mobile phone number in Equifax. I have a mobile phone but I don't much use it, give out the number, or keep it turned on. I use it for emergencies and travel mostly. If someone needs to contact me regarding a financial account, I want them to call me at my home or work numbers. I have a copy of my TransUnion credit report from few months go which lists phone numbers (home and work, plus old numbers associated with me), but my mobile phone is not one of them. So I am afraid that even if I can give the IRS a financial account number that can be matched up with Equifax, the registration process may fail again due to mobile phone number probably not being recorded in Equifax. Has anyone else had problems with this and have any advice on how to resolve them?
I have recently used the mobile number to make my SSA account more secure. But then when I tried to access my SSA account, webpage was not working.
Also Fidelity also recently required that I give them my mobile phone number for account security purposes.

Re: IRS IP PIN [Identity Protection PIN]
The IP PIN registration / identity verification process seems to fail at even the slightest hint of a problem. I had pretty much the same experience as PennySaved, just now. The system didn't like my Master Card # (opened 33 months ago), can't use Amex, didn't like either of my mortgage account numbers, but did like my Visa # (for a 15+ year old account). The bigger problem came when I tried to verify my mobile number. I've had the number itself for at least 13 years, but moved it to Ting (a Spring MVNO--sort of, but not really, a pay-as-you-go provider) almost 4 years ago. After trying for several minutes, the site told me it couldn't verify. Before I could go through the process again to request they mail me an activation code (after I was logged out for my protection, or some such BS), I was unceremoniously informed that my account was temporarily blocked and I'd have to wait 24 hours before trying again.
I've read that the IRS goes mobile # verification through Equifax, so I suppose this is as much Equifax's fault as the IRS, but c'mon guys--if you're going to have a relatively rigorous verification process, at least use a back-end that can actually check the information properly. /rant
PS anyone know how to get Equifax to register or verify a mobile #?

... and now that I've received notice CP301 by snail mail, with an activation code, the flippin website won't give me a way to enter that code. *grumble grumble grumble*

Re: IRS IP PIN [Identity Protection PIN]
I know its old thread...checked the link too.
Just to be clear : to get a PIN for tax filing , first we must write letter to IRS, asking for permission?
Where do we send the letter? Also for married filing jointly do we both request 2 PINs?
Appreciate insight!
Thank you!!

Re: IRS IP PIN [Identity Protection PIN]
Is this the same pin that I put in to turbo tax just before I file my taxes? Or, is that a turbo tax security measure?
Re: IRS IP PIN [Identity Protection PIN]
I'm not exactly sure what your starting point for asking the questions is, but have you read this page (and those linked to it)? (Admittedly, things aren't overly clear to me even after reading the pages.)andyandyandy wrote: ↑Sun Oct 01, 2017 9:16 pm I know its old thread...checked the link too.

"The Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)" https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-frau ... pin-ip-pin
Who is eligible for an IRS IP PIN?
You're eligible for an IP PIN if:
We sent you a CP01A Notice containing your IP PIN, or
You filed your federal tax return last year as a resident of Florida, Georgia or the District of Columbia, or
You received an IRS letter inviting you to 'opt-in' to get an IP PIN.
How do I get an IP PIN?
If you received a CP01A Notice in December, your IP PIN is located at the bottom of the first column.
If you filed your tax return last year with an address in Florida, Georgia or the District of Columbia, you're invited to participate in the IP PIN program by going to Get an IP PIN. The program is not limited to identity theft victims.
If you lost your IP PIN or didn't receive your new one, Retrieve Your IP PIN for more information.
Re: IRS IP PIN [Identity Protection PIN]
And then, even if one is eligible for the IP PIN ... and more relevant to the older posts on this thread ... the process of authenticating with the website in order to get the PIN seems to require more knowledge than can be gained on just the IP PIN pages. For example...
"Get An Identity Protection PIN (IP PIN)" https://www.irs.gov/identity-theft-frau ... ection-pin
says that among the things you need is
"Secure Access: How to Register for Certain Online Self-Help Tools"
https://www.irs.gov/individuals/secure- ... help-tools
says (about the mobile phone) (bold added by me)

ButA mobile phone with your name on the account.

Also, relevant to current times (Equifax cyberbreach), note that:A readily available mobile phone. Only U.S-based mobile phones may be used. Your name must be associated with the mobile phone account. Landlines, Skype, Google Voice or similar virtual phones as well as phones associated with pay-as-you-go plans cannot be used
If you have a “credit freeze” on your credit records through Equifax, it must be temporarily lifted before you can successfully complete this process.
