As of today our net worth has declined 5.4% from as of 12/31/15
AA is off by 3%.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
I only update my AA monthly. At end of January I was down .9% but am sure it is more now. I have a 40/60 AA so more protected than those with high equity allocation. I check what the market did on a regular basis but I (and you) will go nuts if I check my portfolio performance more often.
It is much too early to rebalance but I will if situation warrants it.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
I'm down by about 4.3% from the peak. I haven't checked my AA, I've been too lazy to re-balance this year. I'm happy to be taking advantage of the cheap stocks with every contribution to my TSP!

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
Our portfolio is down 20% from its peak last April (2015). The decline in our net worth would be slightly less than that.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
I calculate my net worth on Feb 1st ea yr and at that point, I was down 2.4% from a year ago, which sounds better than it is because I made sizeable contributions during the year. I'm sure it's more now. Ouch. I will check it against next Feb.
Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
I usually just check at the beginning of every month but I did look this morning and I am down 4% since January 1 -
looks like that will slide some more after today.
My AA was 55 / 45 bonds & cash. Of course, that's shifted a bit.

I only check quarterly so Jan 1 was a relative high point.
Global and US stocks haven't been in lockstep all of the last year, but I'm guessing VXUS is down ~ 20% from its highs and VTI down ~15% from its highs, and US bonds are sharply higher so (input cartoonish computer sounds here)... my 60/40 portfolio is probably down about 8% from the highs.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
I thought to myself that I neither cared nor knew. Ooops! Nisiprius doesn't either. Therefore, I thought I would take a peek just to spite. Well, since starting investing in 85, I have had one decline (1.3%) in net worth from ought 8 to ought 9 . I only do my networth statement once a year in September so I still don't know. It can't be much.
Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
Comparing my one year net worth value from 2/28/2015 to 2/10/2016 I find that it is down 2.8%. Comparing YTD my net worth is down 0.7%

I don't know about my net worth but my Vanguard IRA is down over 6% from its height a couple years ago.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
If you include real property in "net worth," I really do not know, since I'm not selling, and I could only find out what these things are worth if I did sell. Zillow and Trulia say the real estate is worth more than when I bought it, but that's just an opinion.
My stocks have dropped, but since it's only 30% of my allocation, it's not too bad. My Treasuries have been shooting the lights out lately. And I'm still saving about half of each paycheck. So overall I might be up a bit.

Vanguard said I lost 20k YTD, but I just got a big bonus check of similar amount....so my networth remains almost the same...

Feels like I'm trying to run in place but I keep slipping backwards every 3 steps.
Will be nice to see the numbers when the S&P gets back over 2000 (some day... I hope)

Dumb question: Last year I took out less than I made in dividends and capital gains. Is this something that tends to stay constant (more or less) regardless of DAV?

Probably not much. Our monthly contributions have probably been keeping us about even, slightly down.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
According to Mint's calculations, my net worth is quite a bit higher than it was this time last year. That's all due to savings, though. My IRA is down about 13% vs its cost basis, not sure how much it's down compared to the peak.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
Portfolio was up 2.5% for calendar 2015. For calendar 2016 through yesterday close down 4.00% AA roughly 39% equities, 59% bonds and 2% bank cash at the moment. Retired 4 years, age 68. From 1/1/2010 through 12/31/2015 portfolio is up slightly over 9% annually. I'll call it a sequence of returns bounty.
... and BTW, it's a long road to the grave yard so what happens today, last week, last month and so forth really makes no difference at all to a well diversified portfolio piloted according to plan in the absence of emotion.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
My net worth doesn't have anything to do with my portfolio decisions. I don't know what my portfolio decline is since I don't check things every day. I do know that I have quite a ways to go before I get a re-balance signal so maybe I'll check things this weekend. Probably won't be doing anything anytime soon.

I don't know since I don't track it. I know housing is up a lot over the last couple of years. I assume my investments are just tracking their indexes; since, I only have index funds. I keep adding new money. I have received a couple nice bonuses recently, and it is a nice time to be buying.

The only value I can see in coming up with these numbers is that they might be telling you you're carrying too much risk and need to lower equities. If you have an IPS, seems a good time to review it.chabil wrote:As of today our net worth has declined 5.4%

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
My portfolio is down 3.6% this year. It is down just over 7.5% from the all time high which was reached last May. This figure is fully adjusted for all the contributions I have made since. I rebalanced to a fully invested stock position on tonight's close. I usually only make one or two moves per year. Expect the market to fluctuate. Should be interesting.
Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
My portfolio was at an all-time high as of Feb 8; haven't looked since then. I might look tomorrow morning, since I heard there was a big drop in the Dow. Maybe I'll hit another high.
Of course, none of this is particularly remarkable - I'm around 10% stocks/90% bonds. I took Larry Swedroe's point that adding 10% equity stabilizes and improves return for even a conservative portfolio, and compared to 0% stocks. I have been strongly influenced by his "Ability-Willingness-Need" risk assessment. Don't see a need, and pretty weak on the willingness part as well, which makes the ability part moot, at least for now. My wife and I retired at the end of 2014.

Net worth? Hard to say since I'm not really convinced Zillow or Redfin are accurate. I have a new car and I've paid down the mortgage like a bat out of ***, so I'm assuming I'm doing OK. I don't FEEL any different . . .

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
I'm assuming you're referring to liquid assets. I just checked for this thread. After today I'm down almost exactly 10% since a peak at the end of July. It would be down 12% but for my contributions in the interim. It's hard to care too much, I'm a lifetime away from retiring, and I expect several 35% declines before that happens.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
I check mine at the end of the month. From 12/31 to 1/31, it increased 3.2%. That increase is entirely due to new contributions. I got a decent bonus and put the entire thing into investments, plus the normal monthly contributions. I will say that the value on my 401k just *barely* increased from end of December to end of January due to the contribution. As it continues to grow I imagine monthly losses will become more and more common.
As for rebalancing, I'm mostly in Target Retirement funds, so it's done automatically.

Re: What is your decline in Net Worth as of today?
A few years work, but it doesn't bother me anymore. Having seen quite a few such times before, I'm better psychologically in corrections/bears than I used to be. Having more than enough and a decent bond/cash allocation helps, but this level decline will happen many times in most investors lifetimes so it's best to get used to it.

I checked because monthly contributions are going in this weekend. Looks to be about 14-15%. My assets are 100% stocks, globally cap weighted. That index is now slightly worse than 20% loss since end of May 2015 highs. Reinvested dividends and new contributions have helped reduce the loss from the theoretical 20%.
