New 12" Macbook: Which one to buy?

Post by RooseveltG » Sat Jun 06, 2015 9:47 am

For those of you who own the new Macbook, which one did you buy?

Is the base model with the 1.1 Ghz processor fast enough for web browsing, email and watching videos? Is the speed bump for the 1.2 or 1.3 Ghz actually visible with normal usage (vs. video editing, etc)?

Thanks in advance.

Roosevelt.

Thanks, but I am actually asking about which model of the new Macbook with 12 inch display was selected.

Gold:; The speed differences are pretty minimal. If you are not happy at 1.1 you are not going to be happy at 1.3

Not for me but color wise I like the space gray.

The Core M chip in the 12" Macbook is really designed for a "race to sleep" style running; brief bursts of turbo followed by long periods of time well below the "rated" clock speed. The real performance limits are thermal, not 1.1ghz vs 1.3ghz.

There's a fairly good write-up at http://www.anandtech.com/show/9117/anal ... erformance

I have the 1.3. I originally got the 1.2 and it was just fine for my usage, which is pretty close to yours. I returned it for reasons that have nothing to do with its performance, and opted for the 1.3 because I do not need 512Gb of disk, but for my usage (and yours), the 1.2 is enough.

I've read some complaints about UI lag, and they were all on the 1.1 (which, admittedly, is the one that a majority of people have tested). Not sure this is really an issue for most people, though. I mostly chose to upgrade for resale value and peace of mind (and the occasional compiler).

You can always get the 1.1 and test it out for 14 days. If it's good enough for you, you'll have saved a couple hundred bucks. If not, return it and get the upgraded version.

I like the new MacBook, but am going to wait for the second generation. I have a 2012 MacBook Air and, apparently, the new MacBook is slower than my older Air. I'll upgrade when the new MacBook is faster than what I've got. :happy

From 9to5Mac:
MacBook 1.1GHz

32-Bit: Single-Core Average 2212, Multi-Core Average 4070
64-Bit: Single-Core Average 2428, Multi-Core Average 4592
MacBook 1.2GHz

32-Bit: Single-Core Average 2348, Multi-Core Average 4603
64-Bit: Single-Core Average 2579, Multi-Core Average 5185
MacBook 1.3GHz

32-Bit: Single-Core Average 2387, Multi-Core Average 4673
64-Bit: Single-Core Average 2816, Multi-Core Average 5596
The 1.3GHz MacBook’s 64-Bit scores represent 16%-22% improvements over the 1.1GHz model, and 8%-9% gains over the 1.2GHz model.
Whether that 20% improvement is worth the cost and will show a difference in real world usage is questionable if you plan on not doing anything too intensive such as video editing, gaming, etc. I also have my eye on the Macbook but am holding out for the 2nd generation (currently have a 2011 11" Macbook Air that runs great!).

+1 - the next iteration is likely to have much better performance at a cheaper price tag. Always the same with new Apple products (iPhone 3G, iPad 2, MacBook Air, MacBook Retina, etc)

In your other posting you were asking about the Air (RAM vs. Graphics).

If you now considering the new 12" portless Macbook for lightweight apps any Macbook would do. For heavier apps I would go with the MBP. The various speed variations of the 12" are pretty similar. However, specs are pretty easy to google.
