Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I currently have Verizon which is about $80 a month for two phones, voice only. I am thinking about switching to Ting which will be about $35 a month for 500 minutes, two phone lines, and 100 texts. I'd have to buy two new phones as Ting is on a Sprint network and Verizon phones are not compatible. The new talk and text phone on Ting is $100 each. There are some used ones you can get from Glyde. Are there any other affordable plans out there for talk and text only? Looking for under $40 a month for two phones, 500 total minutes and 100 or so texts.
Thanks.
Thanks.

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I have been using harbormobile which is basically just tmobile service on a business plan although you don't need a business to join. Seems kinda sketchy but it's been great so far. I pay $33 flat a month for unlimited talk and text + 2.5 GB of 4G data. Obviously huge savings compared to other plans. I really like Tmobile's new wifi calling as well for some places with poor service. I looked for plans for a couple months before I chose this in July 2014. You do need to bring your own phone and it is month to month with no commitment. I found a new iPhone on craigslist for about $300. There are lots of forum posts on slickdeals and various forums.

Check out Cricket Wireless! I just switched from Verizon. It's AT&T's network, and you may be able to bring your existing phone - the Cricket website has a place to enter your IMEI to find out. If you can't bring your phone, they have a few cheap ones for free or you could find one on Glyde, as you mention.
Cricket is $35/mo (taxes and fees *included*) for unlimited minutes and texts and 1GB of data. If you have more than two lines, subsequent lines are even cheaper.

Check out Consumer Cellular unless you are in an area with no AT&T coverage.

Virgin mobile has a number of "flip" phones for less than $20 and low cost pay by the minute plans.

TracFone does too.

Suggest checking out Page Plus Cellular [https://www.pagepluscellular.com/], a Verizon MVNO, as well.

My wife and I have triple-minute Tracfones. $20 for a 60 (180) minute card and we can usually find a promo code online for another 30 bonus min. We refill maybe once every 2 months. Cheapest non-smart phone there is, IMO.

I have H20 with an unlocked iphone for $27 a month. I am mostly on wireless so I hardly ever use my data allottment. I should have switched from AT&T sooner. this is the best!
Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
We have been pleased with Ting service.
Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
FYI: Ting will be supporting T-Mobile soon (in addition to sprint), which will open up a lot of phone options.
I have ting with 2 phones, 100 voice minutes and 100mb a month. I've been happy with it and haven't found cheaper service that fits our needs and provides the flexibility they do.

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I have the "Walmart plan", which is T-mobile via Walmart, 30$ / mo. for 5G 4GLte speed then unlimited low speed data, unlimited texts and 100 min voice.
http://see.walmart.com/t-mobile
It's 33$ after taxes/fees per month, pre-paid. Pay a little in early if you want some extra minutes. If you follow the instructions in the "Reviews" section submitted by other shoppers, you can use the cell phone you currently have.
https://www.walmart.com/reviews/product/15443357
It's been a pretty decent set up for me since I primarily text and use data. (I use computer VoIP for most of my calling).

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I just bought a prepaid basic Tracfone today with 60 (140) minutes good for 5 months, costing me $20 for the minutes. I don't plan on using the cell phone often, just for emergencies and the rare long-distance calls. I hope I use those minutes within 5 months so I don't lose them.gvsucavie03 wrote:My wife and I have triple-minute Tracfones. $20 for a 60 (180) minute card and we can usually find a promo code online for another 30 bonus min. Another suggestion for Page Plus. I think you will be able to take your phone with you and their costs are hard to beat if they have what you want.

I second that. I use the 80 dollar plan for 2000 minutes that expire in one year which I buy from kitty wireless, a page plus reseller. Curteous One-
I'm almost in EXACTLY the same boat as you with providers and plans. I've spent way too much time obsessing over it already, my plan runs out with Verizon in April.
Long story short, there are many roads to Dublin. We are going to go with Ting, because 1) Sprint coverage is decent here and 2) I get warm fuzzy feelings with the glowing reports of their customer service and 3) I really like paying for what I use. They have a cool, unique pay plan.
I found this useful: http://forum.mrmoneymustache.com/share- ... superguide!/
At the very least, everything I've seen says you can't go wrong with Ting (provided you have Spring coverage in your area).
We'll probably by inexpensive new/used phones to get Sprint devices. Pain in the neck, but worth it when you do the math. Hope this helps!

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
Check out republic wireless, we have the $10/ month plan, also please see the December issue of Consumer Reports for independent ratings of Cell service providers. Ting and Republic wireless come out on top.
Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
We're one of the few holdouts without a cell phone. But for an "emergency phone" to carry in the car, we use the AT&T Prepaid go-phone. It costs $100/year, and gives us far more minutes-of-use than we can ever use.
Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I second Republic Wireless.....you have to purchase the phone

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
Also a huge fan of republic wireless. $10 for text and talk plus wifi data. $25 for cell data and you can switch between plans twice a month. We usually keep 1 phone on each plan and then switch the $10 up to $25 temporarily if the data is needed and we aren't traveling together.
Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I got Consumer Cellular as it came cheapest for relatively low usage and another phone for only $5 more. Other MVNOs I considered didn't have this option to share with another phone. For 2 of us, this was the cheapest.

OP: I did a fair amount of research on inexpensive GSM plans in the past year. If you're willing to use GSM phones, and have good T-mobile coverage where you live, I can't recommend Ultra Mobile more: http://ultra.me/. Great service, clean website, smooth experience overall.
20 per month (the $19 plan + $1 fee), and you get unlimited voice/text. And 100MB of 4G LTE in case you need it occasionally.

Would T-mobile work for you? If so, check out their prepaid plan. You'd pay $36 per year.Bill M wrote:We're one of the few holdouts without a cell phone. $3 per month, 30mins included. 10cents/minute after that.

On a general note: google voice is now integrated with google hangouts (you don't need to be signed up for g+ though). This means that you can use it for free calling (and receiving) via Wifi on your smartphone. I do this, and 95% of the time, don't use cell minutes because of this. It's been completely reliable, and the quality is as good or better than cell minutes.
Of course, you'd have to be willing to give up your privacy to the man. Then again, you probably will save taxpayer money by doing so efficiently. Sigh.

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I switched my personal phone to Page Plus pay as you go as my primary phone is supplied by work.
I called Verizon and told them I was planning to do this. It was unclear what I needed to do with them. Page Plus ported the phone without issue.
Can anyone advise if I need to take further action with Verizon i.e. formally cancel the line or continue to be charged?

I don't think so. I did the same thing as you and didn't even talk to Verizon. The Page Plus dealer did everything that needed to be done.Wellfleet wrote:I switched my personal phone to Page Plus pay as you go as my primary phone is supplied by work.

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
+1 bought a Nokia at Amazon (maybe $50) which gives me WiFi capability should I ever use it. With ATT rolling over the yearly $100 worth of minutes (at $.10 per minute) I now have $480 worth of calling time for 2015. The wife with a flip phone 4-5 years old has $280 minutes for 2015. Main use is for Bluetooth calls in the car when needed as we slowly move into the 21st century.Bill M wrote:We're one of the few holdouts without a cell phone. I agree completely. Cricket has UNLIMITED wireless, 1 MB at the highest speed.LeisureLee wrote:Check out Cricket Wireless! I just switched from Verizon. I would NOT recommend Republic Wireless at all. They are attached to Sprint, which has one of the poorest network coverage in the US. For example, I could not any data in many areas between Cleveland and Akron (hardly rural areas), a good amount of the Tucson area, and the like. In addition, WiFi calling was consistently poor and customer service is non-existent as your only way to get help is to post a message on a message board and hope you get a response that you can understand.
If you desire to LEAVE Republic, they do not cooperate with other carriers and porting a number according to many on their message boards take as many as EIGHT days. After three days of waiting on Republic, I decided to blink and give up my old number when I moved to Cricket Wireless.
Cricket has people who will help you set up your phone and will be able to answer nearly any question you have.

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
I am sorry to learn your experience with Republic was negative. Both my wife and I have been pleased with our service and the support thus far with Republic. We love that we now never need to keep track of minutes, data, how many txt msgs we send or receive, and enjoy our savings over "Big Red" our prior cell service provider. I would strongly suggest that anyone reading this thread take a look at the recent Consumer Reports rating of cell providers as it provides statistically far more sample points than this thread. http://www.newsobserver.com/2014/11/20/ ... .html?rh=1jlawrence01 wrote:I would NOT recommend Republic Wireless at all. Another vote here for PagePlus. We used to have Verizon at $120 month for 4 phones. We now do the $80 / 2000 minute card that is good for up to a year. Cellphone costs sent from $1,440 / year to $320 / year for 4 phones. We are not heavy users and do not use data on our phones. Once the line is ported by the pageplus reseller you do not have to notify verizon.

I've used ting for 4 months with 4 lines. Migrated from Sprint. Saving $100/mo. No complaints. As someone else said, in Feb, they are going to be on both Sprint and TMobile, and the choice of phones will really open up.

Tracfones. Wifey's tracfone uses a Verizon fliphone, I am using a Tracfone Alcatel model (cant find a fliphone anymore). Still have land line for the DSL. Hate the bundling concept.

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
In terms of native coverage, it goes Verizon > AT&T > Sprint > T-mobile. People can argue it all they want, but Sprint covers more people without having to roam onto 2G. If we were talking 2-4 years ago when Sprint tried to beat everyone to the punch and bet on Wimax for 4G, while everyone else went with LTE, then I'd agree with you. Obviously this is location dependent. I get high speed 4G LTE no problem, and they now have Spark (tri-band LTE) 30 minutes away, so It'll probably start up around here soon.jlawrence01 wrote:I agree completely. Even in my area, Sprint = AT&T, as both fail to cover my house, the grocery store, and my work (my 3 main areas to use my cell) and other similar areas. Verizon does a better job in my area, and t-mobile is pretty bad.
As for RepublicWireless, they are a VoIP provider, not a real cell phone provider. So, if you port your number to a VoIP provider you can port it out wherever you want (it is your number), but sometimes the companies try to stop you (you may have to fight them, but you are in the legal right, so they should do it). If you GET a number with a VoIP provider you have no legal possession of the number (it is the VoIP providers number) so you don't have a legal right to port the number out.

It's very simple if you have google voice. All you have to do is install the two apps below, and you should be all set to make calls! To receive calls, simply "enable incoming" in the settings. Basically, using google voice on your phone via wifi as described above is a sort of a DIY version of the Republic plans.
Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
Another PagePlus via Kitty wireless customer, runs us $12 a month per phone for 250/250 and 10mb data. Uses Verizon phones and network.
Can see the plan options here http://www.kittywireless.com/pageplus/p ... plans.html
Kitty is coming out with their own system, as opposed to PagePlus, still Verizon phones on Verizon's network. Changing mine to $19.95 for 300/300 and 300mb data, leaving my wife on the kitty $12 for now.
Here's their's. http://mypuppywireless.com/management/c ... n/pos.aspx
We've used them for about 2 years now with no issues after the initial setup.

Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
we have been using tracfone for years.
the phones they offer vary from very basic to smart phones.
you get triple minutes with almost all/all the phones now.
we buy a 1 year card and that does well for us.
is the cheapest cell phone service that i have figured out and it works fine.
note to the person who mentioned using the minutes before they expired: as long as you purchase more minutes before the date the minutes expire the minutes will be rolled forward and not lost. so no pressure to try and use up the minutes.

Thanks for your help. I downloaded and installed the Hangouts and Hangoutsdialer apps. I was able to make a call just fine. I've tried several different Voip apps before and none of them worked very well, but this was fine. I haven't received a call yet, so I don't know how that will work. I'm not able to find where the "enable incoming" setting is - can you advise? My cellphone does have a native number, but I use my google voice number to make and receive calls on this phone, so that's why I referred to it as my primary number.DoubleClick wrote:It's very simple if you have google voice. Left Net10 (horrid) for Ting and couldn't be a more night-and-day experience. Ting's customer service is stellar, bill is easy to understand, lots of web controls, alerts, turn features on/off, etc.
[Referral comment removed by admin LadyGeek]
Example: We were running up to the 1,000 minute mark with just a couple days left in the billing cycle. We set up e-mail/text alerts to tell us when we were close (warning: there is a little lag). As a fail safe, our phones were also shut off (easily turned back on with a few clicks). That feature saved us $17 this month.
I don't like data, but there are times were having navigation or email saves lots of time and $$$ (calculate cost of your time and mileage at $0.50/mile when you're lost driving. I have an app that turns my data on/off with one click... this month I'll pay $0.00 for data since I never turned it on. The minimum charge with $3.00, and I've never paid more.

I have an app that turns my data on/off with one click... this month I'll pay $0.00 for data since I never turned it on. The minimum charge with $3.00, and I've never paid more.

Open the hangouts dialer app (not the hangouts app). It's in settings (top left corner, or swipe in from left) -> account -> Incoming Calls.Browser wrote:Thanks for your help. My cellphone does have a native number, but I use my google voice number to make and receive calls on this phone, so that's why I referred to it as my primary number.

I've had good experiences with Republic wireless and PagePlus.
Re: Looking for low cost cell phone plans...
Thanks. Found it. "Incoming phone calls: ring hangouts for incoming calls to your google voice number". Checked this box. Tell me how this works. If you are connected to WiFi, you should get incoming calls on hangouts for free? If you are on your carrier broadband, you will get calls on hangouts but pay for wireless minutes? Does this happen automatically without having to think about it, so that whenever you are in range of a WiFi the calls are free?DoubleClick wrote:Open the hangouts dialer app (not the hangouts app). We don't know where we are, or where we're going -- but we're making good time.

Another happy Ting customer here.
Previously used Tracfone, but could not tolerate the abysmal customer service any longer. A case where rock-bottom price is not the best option.

Add one more to the Ting chorus. They also have a decent referral program.

I have the Republic Wireless service too. Unlimited phone and texting for $10/mo. No long term contract and can replace month to month contract 2 times/month. Also their phones have very good reviews and I do love mine.winterescape wrote:Check out republic wireless, we have the $10/ month plan, also please see the December issue of Consumer Reports for independent ratings of Cell service providers. Ting and Republic wireless come out on top.
Plans range from $5 to $45 per month.
My wife has Verizon so if we're at a restaurant I hop on the internet via a hotspot on her phone. Besides texting her, every once in awhile, we'll even talk to each other.
Have no complaints with Republic and never a problem placing or receiving calls.
A bit off subject, but if anyone could chime in on this: Evidently, the great thing about 4G is that voice becomes data packets just like everything else. If that's the case, if I'm in a wifi area, via skype or any other such service, I can make a phone call without actually having a phone, right? (Sorry if sounds like dumb question, but it seems to me before long we're not going to need our traditional smart phones to make calls.)
