What are you thankful for?

In the spirit of today, I would just like to share with all of you how thankful I am to have found this discussion board. Besides the fact that I have learned more than I ever thought possible about investing, taxes, retirement, etc., the discourse on this board is almost always respectful, welcoming, and polite. It is always a wonderful respite from the craziness of life, the news media, and the contentiousness frequently found on other websites. I will refrain from thanking individual people for fear of forgetting anyone, but thank you to all of the professional experts, the armchair experts, and those of you bringing a lifetime of experience and knowledge to bear in your advice, thank you to the moderators for keeping the peace, and thank you to the old guard for starting down this journey decades ago and paving the way for the rest of us.

Truly am thankful for the mods abolutism on political posts. There are few refuges from that topic these days, and this is one of them.

Yes, thank you so much! When I first started I knew nothing. I decided I wanted a Roth IRA, something my employer couldn't peek at, and someone said Vanguard is good. I googled "what is the most popular Vanguard fund?" and got a lot of returns re the the original 500 Fund. So I bought that and continued searching for more information and came across the Morningstar Diehards and followed them here. Of course, I soon found out the 500 Fund may not be the best for me and should have bought Total Stock Market. Live and learn. Many years later, after buying and trading different funds, I'm pretty settled and content. I need to make a donation to the forum now. I don't have the intellect most here have, but boy, I've learned so much!

During the craziness of 2020... Every single website had politics injected into seemingly every story. Sports... entertainment... finance... literally everything.

Except for this forum. This place became my only online politics-free sanctuary.

I prefer the diversification of 3,000+ companies versus the top 500. At the time I could only afford one fund and Total Stock Market Fund suited me best.

For the moderators here: they truly make the discussions polite, comfortable, and educational.

For what I've learned here: I was in a very risky portfolio when I semi-retired at age 57. I thought carefully about my financial goals and moved into age-appropriate allocations. Thankfully, due to careful spending and investments and the invaluable advice of knowledgeable forum members, I am able to financially support an adult child who became dangerously ill two years ago (frugally, but still, two people on a retiree's budget. I'm grateful.) I view managing my finances as a part-time job, and I really do save the equivalent of a small part-time job income by doing it myself. Thanks!
