The Porsche as Smart Investment for Single Guy on the Make

Post by mathwhiz » Mon Jun 27, 2011 7:26 pm

Interesting article on the utility of conspicuous consumption for single men.

Read more: http://moneyland.time.com/2011/06/27/th ... z1QWeLqwF1

A new study indicates that driving a Porsche or engaging in otherwise flashy spending can serve a dual purpose. First, it successfully attracts women. Second, it gives off the distinct impression to women that the owners of such cars are interested only in “short-term mating liaisons.”

In other words, a Porsche is driven by a certain kind of man, and that Porsche attracts a certain kind of woman—and both are presumably OK having flings rather than committed relationships. It’s a match made in heaven, though one that’s not made to last.

The study, titled “Peacocks, Porsches, and Thorstein Veblen: Conspicuous Consumption as a Sexual Signaling System,” written by marketing and psychology professors from the University of Minnesota, Rice University, and the University of Texas-San Antonio, likens the driving of a Porsche to the flaunting of a brightly colored tail by the male peacock: It’s all about trying to attract women. Only the peacock doesn’t have to drop a few hundred thousand dollars on a sports car.

A Porsche is a fun car to drive even if not used a chick magnet.

fortunately for peacocks there is no Peacock Immunodeficiency Virus.

another tip: don't shave on the days your (short-term) targeted mate is ovulating.

$1950/day for a Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Roadster rental. I'd need to get my driver's license first.

Reminds me of a quip I heard recently,

I bought a 1970 Porsche 911 brand new at age 27. Kept it ten years. Loved it. Never got laid.

Maybe being at sea 70% of the time had something to do with that.

 I never understood conspicuous consumption when it comes to cars. Stop for a moment and picture your co-workers or church congregation, etc. Now try and picture the cars they drive. Can you? I can't. Honestly, unless you're one of those folks that wears a 'porche' hat, nobody else will know either. Most folks just don't associate people with the cars they drive.

Also, in my experience women don't care *what* you drive as long as:
1. It's clean
2. Can it haul their junk?

The only people that get turned on by cars are middle aged men. Not exactly my target demographic when I want to impress people. You're much better off spending 1/10th of that money on a nice wardrobe

The problem isn't that sports cars attract women...it's the type of women they attract.

I care what I drive but I don't really care what anyone else does. While I'm a passenger I want clean and comfortable (and a reasonably sane driver).

I loved having a convertible, it was a great stress reliever (and I looked good in it, which didn't hurt). I'll probably get another once my oldest starts driving and I can pass on the Corolla.

Just rent one and pretend you own it. I mean if you're going to be that shallow why pay all that money for some one-night stands with equally shallow women? Then you can really have the last laugh.

A day with that car and my licence would be confiscated by court order so I would not have one either :-/

From the study on which the article is based http://www.csom.umn.edu/assets/164441.pdf

So a Porche Boxster increases an average "date desirability" value from 6.4 to 6.9? That isn't what I call a "smart investment".

I wonder what the comparable benefit would be of a good haircut, a smile or a compliment.

Many car shows have conducted experiments where they park different cars on the side of the road to see if they can pick up women.

The result is almost always that flashy cars attract the attention of other men and hardly any women. :D

The point of the research is that the women are attracted to the men in the cars, not the cars.

They needed a university study to figure out that expensive luxury cars attract the opposite sex? I thought most people would have known that already.

I suppose those professors need to use their research budgets on something.

I have owned several "hot" cars in my day. Own somewhat of one now. None of them ever helped me pick up women whatsoever. However, that was not my purpose in buying them, so I do not care at all.

There is no cure for a small penis.

If women only want me for the kind of car I drive, they must be immature losers.

And I can't see myself folding my 6 feet, 4 inch frame into that tiny Porsche.

I guess they're great if you're about 5'3"?

Geesh, I was a Peacock and didn’t know it........ LOL

Bought a near new 1968 912 five speed Porsche (red) right out of my Southeast Asia stint, courtesy of our Uncle. Not too sure about the chick magnet thing, if I recall they were more impressed with Corvettes & Mustangs back then? But, one truth, that car was the sure cure for any service related PTSD. And, a damn great ski hauler too!

Investment… owned that baby for over 35 years and sold it for way more than I paid for it.

Yeah, if I were a young single guy again, I wouldn’t hesitate buying a Porsche. No matter how conspicuous it may appear to others.

I've seen some of those studies. As I recall, in terms of attracting the attention of women, the most successful (in order) were:

4) Limo
3) sports car
2) guy holding a baby
and the #1 best woman-attractor: Guy holding a puppy.

According to all the single guys I know the absolutely best chick magnet is to take a small dog for a walk in the park or along the beach or to the outside of the mall food court. They tell me they can meet 10 great women in an hour and get 5 phone numbers in that time. No way is a Porsce that good. No only that they swear the women they meet this way are good looking and nice. Plus these guys that told me this method borrowed the dog to go on these "scouting" trips. The other guy that also swears by this method is a old guy I know who owns two small dogs and has been married forever but swears if he were single! Wow does this work!!!!!

So save your money and borrow a dog for a day..

the puppy is interesting, although you have to remember to distinguish between short- and long-term mating strategies. for short-term, women are very similar to men, they just want something cute, and the puppy facilitates this. you also have to distinguish between actually getting to the mating opportunity or just getting attention; ask any guy, the gulf that separates these two is often frustratingly impassable. plenty of women will be your friend if you seem like a nice guy with a cute dog, you're just another girlfriend.

the expensive car/house/job/portfolio would be a better indicator of someone with resources, and a better long-term mate. a woman with the corresponding female indicators (youth, symmetry, 0.7 waist:hip) will not want to pass that up. attractive women just don't dig homeless guys.

Or you could just buy a used honda civic and apply all the money you just saved towards an escort service. I would think that this is a rather appealing option unleass you're trying to convince yourself that she's actually dating you for your looks and / or personality.
