Streaming radio app?
Streaming radio app?
I’ve mostly been a talk radio and podcast kinda guy but lately have started to enjoy listening to music a little more. I have used Apple Podcasts as my podcast app and once in a blue moon will pay for a subscription to a show if I’m really into the topic, but otherwise usually ok waiting for the next free episode to come out. I have used a free account to the TuneIn Radio app but they are increasingly pushing distracting ads. I’m interested if there are any better free radio / radio station apps to consider or a radio streaming app worth paying for.
Re: Streaming radio app?
I often go directly to the station web site. They frequently have their own streaming link. Took me a while but with an iOS shortcut I have a short menu of several stations i can pop on my phone.
For example
https://xpn.org/
The free apps aren't very good, generally.

I use Audacy to listen to my home town and some out of area stations when out walking or traveling.

TuneIn has streams of my local stations, but so do their websites.

Check out Radio Garden. You see a globe, and then you can zoom in to listen to radio stations all over the world. It's fun. You can search by genre as well as city.

DW and I have been very happy with our subscription to Spotify. I almost gave up on the free version d/t all the loud ads. I even play it in my SUV driving around.

I use Roon for my music, and it supports all of these Internet-streamed radio stations. I sometimes listen to various Irish stations, or my old college radio station.
Re: Streaming radio app?
I use Simple Radio, which is similar to how Tom_T described Radio Garden. Some stations have ads, but what I listen to has minimal.

Re: Streaming radio app?
Try Pandora. Free version is fine, or you cans pay $5 a month for no ads.
Re: Streaming radio app?
Lots of good options have been mentioned already . . .
I use radio.net on my PC and iPhone (with the radio.net app on my phone.)
https://www.radio.net/
On my PC, I use my browser's "save as app" function to create an icon for the site on my taskbar. Pinning the radio.net icon to my taskbar allows for easy access. Clicking on the icon pops the site up in a separate browser window to mimic a stand-alone player.

Re: Streaming radio app?
Apple Music has a whole section called ‘Radio’ with live music, DJs , and artist interviews.

What is your favorite radio station? They probably have a website and an app. I've lived a few places around the country and accumulated a few stations that i really liked. I can listen to them whenever I want on my phone.
Bonus if they are public or college radio stations. No ads.

Re: Streaming radio app?
Do you mean local radio stations or general podcasts/music?
We have settled on Spotify and use the paid plan. Pandora is the other alternatives. Both have free tiers with advertisements so you can try them out (and continue for free of you don't mind ads). My other desire was to have a service where I could listen to music albums in their entirety. Spotify has nearly every album I have ever searched for.

Re: Streaming radio app?
This may be off topic (and possibly a good topic for another thread), but be aware that there are some things you cannot listen to from a local radio station's online feed. For example, the NFL has cracked down on one's ability to listen to your favorite team's game on your home town's radio station online. It will just stop playing. It's an extraordinary censorship on their part, IMO, but they are doing it. I don't know if other groups (sports or otherwise) are asserting their right to pull the plug on certain local radio programing, but that may be where this market sector is going.

The Apple Music app will play streaming radio stations.

One station recommendation!
Go here:

Click, Listen Live top right and you'll see the great variety of songs that it plays.

The BBC has an incredibly wide variety of programs ranging from music to radio dramas to news to game shows. You can download the BBC Sounds app to your phone or go through their web site.
You can find a searchable directory of everything they offer here. Some of my favorites are:
Music
Guy Garvey
Iggy Pop
Marc Riley and Gideon Coe
Natasha Raskin Sharp
Comedy
No Such Thing as a Fish
I'm Sorry I Haven't a Clue
Just a Minute
(The last two are very British, so they may not be for you unless you enjoy puns, wordplay, and other displays of wit.)

Really depends on what you are looking for. In my case I wanted to stay up to date with teams I used to follow back east and in order to do that I use Adacy.com since they have my station on it. As others mention you can sometimes download app for various stations themselves. And there are other apps like oldtime radio shows.

Re: Streaming radio app?
Are you able to listen to games in process? My experience has been as soon as a game starts the station plays a repetitive, annoying message that Major League Baseball rules do not allow the game to be broadcast.rich126 wrote: Tue Feb 04, 2025 11:57 am Really depends on what you are looking for. Re: Streaming radio app?
Sorry, I meant listening to sports talk shows so I can keep up with my (former) local teams. MLB has a radio app that works well. Used to use it when I was commuting home from work. It was fairly cheap IMO. Some things like college basketball does stream, at least in my cases.yankees60 wrote: Wed Feb 05, 2025 12:21 pmAre you able to listen to games in process? I don't stream, but I do listen to WCBN FM Ann Arbor.
It's the University of Michigan student radio station and, aside from a few PSA's they're required to air (some of which are hilariously customized) they're completely commercial free. An excellent mix of jazz, rock, hip-hop, and a whole host of other genres that changes every hour.
