New 2025 Tesla Model Y

Post by YeahBuddy »

I wanted to share since this is a pretty big update to the world's best selling car. The "new" or facelifted model Y, is currently not yet available for sale in the US, but should be soon. It's currently available to order in China and Australia. This is the first time actual photos from Tesla have come out for the new model Y, and below is a link to Tesla's China consumer site. Those in the auto world are excited about improvements to the exterior, all new suspension, new interior materials, and the physical stalk turn signals are back (which had turned into two buttons on the steering wheel). There's also a new glacier blue color. There is no performance model as of today.

Thoughts?

Edit
1/24/25

The new Model Y is posted on Tesla US website with a price of $59,990 which includes FSD, 20" wheels, and your choice of color.
I've concluded that I do not like this update. I do not like the exterior styling. Not the front nor the back. The back gives me Hyundai vibes. And $60k is much too expensive. And I do not like to be forced to buy FSD. From everything I've heard it's still not great and has bugs.

I read about this the other day. It's a 5% price increase, correct?

Is the passenger seat have lumbar adjustments? If not, my wife will not approve buying one, no matter what.

Big update is kind of an exaggeration. I would call it a very minor update.

Ditto. Looks like a revised front and rear as a styling exercise but the core of the car appears to be same. Interior updates follow some of the trend of the model 3 (rear screen, accent lighting), and they only took away 1 of 2 stalks :D . I read something about suspension updates, but I suspect they are just using better/different dampers to soften up the ride.

I still think, overall, it looks good. Incremental improvements here and there, but kinda the same car it was.

The reviews of the Model 3 refresh found that it drove significantly better (nicer ride, less noise) than the original. If the same holds true for this Model Y refresh that's a significant update, as noise and harshness are two of the biggest complaints about the Y.

new suspension
new interior materials
- new ventilated front seats
revised steering wheel
turn stalks added retained
new rear fender and tail lights
new front fender and LED light bar
new color option
new premium speakers / location
- (an interior design engineer on this project indicated it was quite the challenge to fit the speaker on the door trim. they targeted a more immersive experience so speaker(s) were located higher up, closer to the ear. This engineer )
new sound deadening
new glass
Rear-seat passengers get their own display screen, which doubles as a climate control interface and an entertainment hub for streaming video and games
the new interior materials and sound deadening are said to create a much quieter, refined cabin.

I would not call it a minor update.

From an article I just read, "Pricing for the 2025 Model Y has not been finalized, but it’s unlikely to deviate far from the current starting price of $44,630. Tesla’s approach to incremental price adjustments suggests that any increase will be modest, keeping the Model Y competitive in its segment."

Not sure about lumbar adjustments. More info should be coming out within upcoming days.

Pretty sure the news is that they did NOT go from using the left stalk for the turn signals to steering wheel-buttons, as they did on the Model 3. But they did not ADD stalks, those are already on the Model Y.

The body casting is now a single piece(!) the old model was made from 70 pieces. I'd call that an upgrade.

Ah yes that's correct. Fixed with "retained". Therefore it shouldn't be part of my list of improvements. Thank you.

Looks like a really nice update. Recent tests with the Model 3 prove the enhancements were significant. Tesla continues to lead in this segment. The only thing tempting me otherwise is the new Scout EV; but still a wait for availability.

No
People post about specific products all the time. This is the "Personal Consumer Issues" thread which is
"Questions on how we spend our money and our time - consumer goods and services, home and vehicle, leisure and recreational activities"

And I was just asking for thoughts/opinions on the vehicle.

This post is similar to several others including this one asking for opinions on this specific CPAP machine

And someone asking about the 2025 Honda HR-V here

Someone asking for opinions on two different vehicles Mazda CX 50 hybrid vs Honda CR-V hybrid

I like the updates, looks cool.

Not to derail the thread but when a new model of anything comes out it makes me interested to look at used car prices of the prior model. I just did some quick searching and I was impressed with how inexpensive 5 year old Models 3s are now. For example the 2019 model 3 performance cost about 60k new and there are a few available near me for under 20k with around 50k miles. Some base RWD Model 3s for 15k, 4-5 year old model Ys in the 25k price range.

I've never owned an EV or a Tesla so I'm not sure what risks are priced in there, I know the original buyer was probably able to capture some tax credits so that's a factor, but still those used prices seem pretty good to me on the surface, think I might have to look into that more.

The front is OK, the rear, especially the fuzziness around the light, is pretty bad. I hope it will look better in person.

We'll have to wait until the cars are available to drive before we can make any more judgement, but hopefully it will have the ride compliance and quietness of the new Model 3.

I wonder how Tesla plans to address new Euro NCAP requirements for physical buttons.

NCAP's 2026 protocols are still under review
https://www.euroncap.com/en/for-enginee ... protocols/#

Nevertheless, the proposed requirements are for:
-blinkers
-hazards
-horn
-wipers
-SOS

3 of those things were already physical, and the remaining 2 (wiper and blinkers) are already reinstated in the 2025 Y. The column is interchangeable with the Model Y so change in production should be seamless.

Interesting, thanks for pointing this out. I've had a Model 3 since they came out and have had no interest in a Y. That changes with this, will stay tuned for when I replace the 3. I assumed I was going S, but maybe not

it's expected to have a bigger gap to the toyota corolla and rav4 than last year as the globally best selling vehicle

the brand overall also retains its lead over byd for highest selling pure battery vehicles

there should be modest range increase from incremental aero improvements.

noone has reported a change in battery capacity, though theres never been a single battery as pack manufacturer and chemistry change by geography or time anyway.

confirmed lower aero resistance for improved range
suspension has been re-tuned for softer ride
seats are ventilated
more sound isolation and double-paned glass all around
front bumper camp with washers!!! super useful for pulling forward onto a curb... although disappointingly still no washers for rear camera
glass roof has more heat rejection which is quite important in the summer

those are key changes for me. still not very fond of the look compared to existing version.

After closely following this for several months, I've concluded that I do not like this update. I do not like the exterior styling. The back gives me Hyundai vibes. $60k is much too expensive. I bought one recently because it was $40k with tax incentive, and it’s worth it at that price due to the unmatched torque/horsepower. No chance I would pay $60k for this level of quality. And FSD is useless for urban driving.

Initial offering is clearly to capture maximum profit while they ramp up production capabilities.

I don’t love the new styling, but I’ll reserve final opinion until I start seeing them in the wild.

I would expect to be able to buy them closer to the price of the previous generation without all the add ons within a few months.

This pricing is a way to avoid cannibalizing of the existing vehicles and production while they transition the manufacturing line.

I expect after they fully convert manufacturing, the vehicles will be the same price or even less than today. (Barring extrinsic changes like macro). The Foundation vehicle is actually cheaper than current model *if* you were to spec all its options.

The interior is a welcome refresh. Front end exterior less so. Im curious what the Performance trim will have and look like.

I was quite skeptical on purchasing in Dec but I've been enjoying it since then. It's a 2025 model year but not the latest (Juniper) version. I looked around and given my requirements the Model Y was the cheapest (considering tax credits etc.) so I pulled the trigger. We got the 3 months free FSD and it is simply amazing both on local roads and highways. While I like the looks of my model more than the latest one (beauty is in the eyes of the beholder, right!) I'm sure the new one will drive much better with softer suspension.

Thanks for the updates. I'm working on my wife to consider giving up her beloved 2011 Lexus RX-350, which is the best vehicle we've owned by far in almost 40 years of marital bliss, for a model Y. My insurance agent says we'll pay a little more than double what the Lexus costs to insure which is not bad going from a 2011 to a 2025 model.

From what I can tell there is no real price premium required for the new model. However, it is being launched fully loaded. Once you add $8,000 for FSD, $2,000 for premium color, and $1,000 for towing, you're already at $11K of the $12K differential. If I was going close to this direction, I would lean towards the new model.

Otherwise, I would go for a base older version or demo unit.

Did you ask what it would cost if you got a new Lexus? Insurance with Tesla is very high. When I inquired, it was going to double mine and my car is new (2023). Insurance company said it's because they are expensive to fix. Going from 2019 to 2023 RDX, my insurance stayed the same (as in premium was not affected by swapping old for new in 2023, but the rate has gone up each year).

20k for a 2019 Model 3 seems like a good value for the money from a used buyers perspective, is the risk of expensive repairs that high with a 5 year old Tesla? Why wouldn't used car buyers drive the price up more?

I didn't ask for a new model Lexus quote because I'm the one pushing for a model Y. We pay $332 semi annually for the RX-350 and the Model Y Long Range AWD quote I got was $693 semi annually. I have heard as well that premiums are higher on Teslas because they are totaled at a higher rate than ICE vehicles but I'm no expert on EVs as this would be my first. The extra insurance cost isn't a major concern to me.

I pay approx $1000 every 6 months and it was going to go up to approx $2000 every 6 months. Car insurance is high where I live.

Heard from where and when? The latest version "13.x" regularly drives people hundreds of miles and for hours without needing to touch the steering wheel (you can actually start the car from the touchscreen now, and it can reverse out and sometimes park at the destination). Yes it still requires supervision, so if your criteria for "great" is that you don't need to pay attention, then I suppose that matches up as indeed there are bugs requiring some assistance infrequent extra accelerator press or turn signal lane change suggestion and rare safety disengagement.

Ohh well.
20k for a 2019 Model 3 seems like a good value for the money from a used buyers perspective, is the risk of expensive repairs that high with a 5 year old Tesla? Why wouldn't used car buyers drive the price up more?
I have a 2019 m3 long range with FSD. Tesla trade in was 15k. Carmax was 14. No thanks

Buyer buying this car would get a great deal on a very good car. You are also buying 15% less miles (battery degradation), risk of expensive repairs (electronics) and high insurance rates

Keep in mind although m3 tesla go for 40-45k, most buyers qualify for the 7500 tax rebate so its reflected in the used car market, there is glute of used tesla as they were the only manufacturer that was able to keep up with demand early post covid 2021-2023, lastly the used ev tax rebate has basically set an artificial ceiling price for used ev at 25k (to qualify for the 4k rebate).

Once you add $8,000 for FSD, $2,000 for premium color, and $1,000 for towing, you're already at $11K of the $12K differential. If I was going close to this direction, I would lean towards the new model.

Otherwise, I would go for a base older version or demo unit.
You could actually add bigger wheels and apparently performance boost to what is included (see the different 0-60 times). If you wanted all the included stuff, it is actually less expensive than the older model.
