Pants for cold windy days

Post by EnjoyIt »

I'm hoping someone can give me advice on warm pants that look decent and fit well.

I live in a warm climate but travel to cold locations regularly. I am talking about temperatures that maybe 10 degrees Fahrenheit or more. My favorite pants are jeans and even if I put thermals underneath, the wind blows right through and my legs get cold and therefore I get cold. I guess what I am looking for are pants that don't let much if any wind through, are casual kind of pants that I can wear sneakers with, or, I can add shoes and they appear a bit more formal such as going out to dinner. I am tall and thin and hoping to find something that fits well and looks good. I have no problem paying $100+ for a good pair of pants.

Please help :)

Edit to Add:
I am male
I am not looking for thermals or snow pants.
I am picky

You might check the LL Bean catalog. They have lined jeans that would probably work for you.

As said above, maybe poorly, I am not looking for a base layer. I am looking for an outer layer. I have plenty of good thermal pants.

https://www.duluthtrading.com/Mens-Fire ... 34513.html Love them. Been wearing them in cold weather for years now. They only time they're not warm enough is if I'm not active and simply sitting there (ice fishing, hunting, etc.), in which case a pair of bibs over them works just fine. Comfortable, wear like iron, and almost impossible to stain.

I bought a couple of pairs of TSLA snow pants from Amazon and they are comfortable and relatively cheap. $40 and they work well and seem tough. I also use them during fall tree cutting so they see a lot of hard use. Several colors.

Without gaiters they are even cheaper.

I thought about fleece lined jeans as I love jeans. But I fear it would not eliminate the wind permeability. I wonder if anyone has experience with such pants.

Thanks for the recommendation.

+1. Have the fleece lined and the flannel lined. The fleece lined are the warmest and the ones I use for walks or hanging out at home on cold days. Flannel lined are great when out and about.

If you have the time, go to the outdoor stores (e.g., REI) or malls where it is cold. They will have the appropriate clothing. I know the stores here have a lot of options. This way you could try the pants on. For something that looks nice, I would definitely want to try them on.

Awesome...thanks for the post.

I wish there was an L.L. Bean near me. I will need to check their return policy.

I generally have a hard time finding something that fits me well being thin and tall and would need to buy several different pairs and then return one of them.

Polar fleece is actually surprisingly good against wind.

You also run the risk in this quest, of being too warm when you go inside. Depending on your situation and how important it is to look good when you’re outdoors, you might get a cheap pair of rain pants to block the wind when you’re outside, then just take them off when you go in.

The other thing, don’t laugh, is panty hose. They’re cheap, can be worn under anything, and NFL players wear them for cold weather games. I have a 6’3” friend who wears dresses to work, and she finds them to fit, so they exist in tall sizes.

Part of the problem you’re having getting useful answers is that people who live in climates like that are more acclimatized to that kind of weather, so they just dress how they need to and deal with it. But, having lived in Southern California for the last 40 years, I feel your pain.

I got a pair of fleece lined pants from Costco last year and liked them so much that I got another this year. Works great when I'm walking the dog in 20-degree temps in the morning.

That is essentially what I do -- although mine are silk long johns. Fit under normal clothing. Wool pants (or nylon for outdoor activities). I almost never wear cotton in cold or hot weather; it absorbs moisture. Silk (or synthetic equivalent will wick well once indoors.

You can buy pull over wind pants. Rain pants work well too. But you have to give up looks for comfort.

Carhartt fleece lined jeans. Awesome. Very warm. not bulky.
Try a store that sells work clothes like the Work n Gear chain. Some Home Depot stores carry them here in New England.

You want "windproof lined pants".

These ones are expensive (but in your price range) and fit the look you want:

I ride my bike for at least an hour at a time in these types of temps (on a bike the wind really hits me). I use a base layer under my cycling tights. I would never buy special pants for the cold. I'm not talking about cotton thermals, but lightweight wool or synthetic fabrics.

A base layer under Prana Stretch Zion pants.

Prana used to make a lined version, but only for a few years.

I own zero pairs of jeans or jean shorts. The last pair died probably 7-8 years ago.

Let me add that I also wear knee-high wool socks, even with the base layer. A balaclava to cover my head and ears. Every square inch of me is covered except my nose and eyes. It matters.

I don't have any of these particular pants, but I can definitely vouch for lined FireHose canvas in general, as I have a jacket made out of the stuff. It's pretty much impervious to wind/rain. Has kept me warm on some VERY cold dog walks and snowblowing adventures.

They are amazing when skiing. I buy from companies like smart wool, Colombia and Arcetyx.

Arcteryx is probably the warmest and is pulled out on the really really cold days. Smart wool and Colombia are about the same. If you can think of better quality thermals (base layer) I'm all ears.

OP, just ignore this comment if you find it to be a tangent, but what I find most comfortable when I am outside in cold weather is a 3-quarter length coat that covers my derrière and my upper thighs, warm socks and shoes that are appropriate for the weather. I don’t really worry about pants in that scenario.

OP I have had good luck with fleece lined nylon pants that look kind of like a cross between khakis/work pants. I have bought a few brands from Costco and they are usually around $15-30, brands like Orvis, Eddie Bauer, Gerry.

Things that block wind tend to also be waterproof. So call them snow pants or not, OP wants something more or less waterproof.

I have goretex-lined mountain pants that would be perfect for this application. Better ones are reinforced in the places that crampons tend to tear.

I’ll put these up for your consideration. I found them to be similar to some of the other warm work pants mentioned here except of better quality. While they meet or exceed most of your criteria, they do look like work pants and despite their outstanding wind proof performance 10 degrees is still 10 degrees and that may necessitate a base layer as I’m sure you are already aware.

I wear flanel or fleece lined blue jeans and kakis in the winter up here (Alaska). The later would serve your need for a bit more formal as described above. I wear these all day including for meetings and on my daily hour-long walks, regardless of weather. For an hour or so outside, they definitely suffice. If its below zero, blowing hard, remote, and/or I'll be outside a significant amount of time, then I will add a goretex shell over.

Ultimately, what matters is what you're doing outside. Since you said sneakers, I assume the full winter outting is probably not your target experience. I do have snow pants and breathable water/wind "proof" hiking shells I use for longer, remote hikes. But honestly, if its just an afternoon hike, what I wearing, the flanel lined jeans, are adequate and when driving sleet like last week, I get wet and just change when I get home.

I wear a lot of corduroys from L. L. Bean for this. They're warm, I find them more comfortable than jeans, they don't need ironing, and you can wear them in casual or nicer situations. They are a bit bulkier than jeans, though.
I know I don't know all of the answers, but I think I know some of the questions.

Tactical pants from various outlets claim to be windproof and waterproof, although anything waterproof will be windproof. The waterproof part is a bit of a stretch, more like highly water repellent...at first.
There are many different looks, I'm not a fan of the tactical look, but there are different options to choose from.

I'm out in sub freezing weather everyday during the winter, and while walking or hiking just ordinary jeans work fine. If sitting around the lined pants come into play. For high winds either wind pants or waterproof pants and used.

I have such pants and love them! Got them at the hardware store (Menards). The Wranger brand was notably heavier than the other brand they had (I forget what brand that was). They are not "wind proof" like GoreTex would be, but from a functional perspective, not much wind comes through and they are very comfy in the cold! Better than long underwear + regular jeans.

I've wound up replacing my jeans over the years and now have 3 pairs of these:

With a base layer I have no problems in 20F, but my face decides when it's time to go inside well before my legs feel it.

I live in North Dakota where we have cold and wind in abundance. If you are looking at 10 degrees or above, fleece lined jeans are more than sufficient - especially if you are moving around.

Some casual looking hiking pants might work. Often they are water and wind resistant. Might need base layer for warmth.

This.. base layer, mid layer and then a shell pant that is windproof/waterproof. There are a bunch out there ranging from really thin and can double as rain pants in the spring (Marmot Precip or similar) up to super burly mountaineering/skiing type shell pants. As someone mentioned upthread - a local REI would be my first stop. If you aren't looking for a layering system (and it sounds like you are) for an all in one solution over polypro base we tend to wear the heavy range of Carhartt bibs and coveralls for outdoor work when it gets really cold.

I have 2 pair from Bass Pro shops that are warm. One is just fleece lined and the other has a very thick lining.
I bought them to be warm and they are.
They weren't very expensive so they are probably not stylish.

For women, LL Bean has Women's Perfect Fit Pants, Fleece-Backed Straight-Leg. Great for very cold dog walking and they look good for going out.

I would imagine that their Men's fleece backed pants are also good.

Yes, I definitely think that pants are an excellent idea on cold, windy days! :D
Have a plan, stay the course and simplify. Then ignore the noise!

They only time they're not warm enough is if I'm not active and simply sitting there (ice fishing, hunting, etc.), in which case a pair of bibs over them works just fine. Comfortable, wear like iron, and almost impossible to stain.
There is a Duluth where I am going next week and will check it out. Thanks for the recommendation.
While there, check out their Flexpedition fleece-lined pants. That's all I wear in the winter. Expensive, but they have 1/2 off sales several times a year.
