What Are Your Favorite Podcasts? And Why?
Dear friends,
What are some of your favorite podcasts and why?
Currently I am listening to:
1. The Daily (NYT) - dives into the headlines a bit deeper in short 20 minute episodes
2. The Ezra Klein Show - longer show interviewing specialists about news and current events
3. Planet Money - NPR show that tackles money and finance
Would love to expand my list!

Re: What Are Your Favorite Podcasts?
My top ones are mostly the same. Ezra Klein and Planet Money, and NYTimes' The Daily is also pretty high up there as well. Vox's Today Explained also has some pretty good episodes.
Blowback is a really good history series--first three seasons are on the US-Iraq War, US Intervention in Cuba, and the Korean War. This post inspired me to check and there are two new seasons that I need to listen to.
This American Life is also a must-listen, although it feels weird to call it a podcast, since it was a radio series for so long before podcasts existed as a medium.
Looking forward to seeing what else people recommend.

Ezra Klein is definitely a must listen.
Making Sense with Sam Harris is one I highly recommend. A deep dive into so many great topics, and with such great thinkers.

Clark Howard is my favorite personal finance podcast. He's a boglehead, and covers a variety of personal finance topics, saving money, current scams, etc.
Re: What Are Your Favorite Podcasts?
Acquired, a podcast about various companies and their histories. They do multi hour deep dive so it’s quite interesting. Also freakonomic.

Conservative Review with Daniel Horowitz https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/c ... 1065050908
The coverage during Covid was incredible. He was way ahead of the pack in discussing Jay Bhattacharya and his approach to handling Covid. Discusses tactics and methods. No better conservative discussions on the internet.
Steve Deace Show https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/s ... d481087877
Good discussions on conservative politcs. Has a Christian approach. Listening to Deace and Daniel Horowitz will educate you on conservative politics.

Re: What Are Your Favorite Podcasts? And Why?
Rogan simply gets the best guests on the planet.
I laugh at myself. I’ll see the info snippet for a Rogan podcast, not know anything about the guest and note the near three hour interview.
Thinking there’s zero chance I’ll watch the entire episode, nearly three hours later, there I am.
…how did they move them rocks back then??? LMAO
Elon…I can listen to him all day long.
Every person Rogan puts on his podcast, has a passion score of 10, no matter the subject. That’s why he’s #1.

Re: What Are Your Favorite Podcasts? And Why?
Joe Walker Podcast- Very intelligent and skilled interviewer with a wide range of intellectual guests. His latest were Larry Summers and Nassim Taleb. Taleb got into some fairly advanced statistical math and Walker was able to stay with him. His interview with Katalin Kariko done well before her Nobel Prize award was a masterpiece of interviewing. Political interviews with Australian politicians irrelevant outside of Australia IMO.
Rational Reminder- Excellent guests from the financial world, well done interviews from 2 knowledgeable interviewers.
Masters in Business- Generally excellent guests with skilled interviewer. The Damodaran interview was great, but Damodaran interviews usually are.
Grant's Interest Rate- Grant wears his prejudices on his sleeve, but offbeat interview style and sharp guests make this worth the time.
Meb Faber- Wide range of viewpoints among practicing niche finance professionals. Recents include expert practitioners in microcap, catastrophe bonds, and Mary Jane investment approaches.
Excess Returns- These two guys do interviews, broadcast the interviews, and then rebroadcast snippets of the interviews featuring the interviewees' main teaching points interspersed with their commentaries. A good teaching method IMO.

Culture Gabfest:
Smart, fun panelists with non-identical perspectives; the exchange is good even when the subject (e.g., the latest Marvel movie) might not seem to warrant substantive discussion.
Letters & Politics:
In-depth discussions with book authors (mostly historians)
In Our Time:
Wide variety of topics. Panelists are generally academics, but no one gets to hold the podium for too long as the host really moves things along (often to comical effect).
Getting Things Done:
My dream is to someday fully realize this life management system. The podcast helps keep me moving towards that never-to-be-attained goal. It keeps hope alive.
If you follow my links to episode pages that should give you a better sense of each podcast.
Thanks for the thread!
Re: What Are Your Favorite Podcasts? And Why?
Drifting away from the financial ones, here are a few of my favorites.
The Way I Heard It, Mike Rowe: Yes, the dirty jobs guy, but he is much more than that. Great interviews with humor and human interest thrown in.
Shop Talk Live by Fine Woodworking I'm a hobby woodworker and this podcast has kept me informed and entertained for many years.
The Economics of Everyday Things Podcast Zachary Crockett uncovers the hidden side of the things that surround us. Like who decides what snacks are in your office's vending machine? or, How did girl scout cookies become a billion dollar business. Then theres things like: Money Laundering. How do criminals turn their ill-gotten gains into taxable income? And how does law enforcement stop them?

Checking my spotify podcast list...
Joe Rogan - very polarizing, but his guest list can't be beat, and I really appreciate that he talks to people from all over the political spectrum. A three-hour show gives a better chance to understand someone, as even the most practiced politicians/actors/public figures can't spew the same practiced nonsense for 180 minutes.
The Rest is History - two British hosts talk about all sorts of history-related topics. They both have a good sense of humor and seem to really enjoy each other's company, leading to some witty and educational dialogue.
Net Assessment - podcast focused on national defense issues from an American perspective. Three main hosts that aren't afraid to disagree.
Single Malt Strategy - best podcast I've found that discusses PC strategy games, with "strategy" being defined fairly loosely.
Raising Parents with Emily Oster - as a #girldad, I've enjoyed the centrist, data-driven topics on parenting on this podcast.
The Military Money Manual Podcast - self-explanatory.
Freakonomics Radio - explores the "hidden science" behind all sorts of everyday topics. Examples: Is America switching from booze to weed? How to predict the presidency? etc.
Tim Ferris show - interesting guest list; host often explores how success happens.

New York Times Book Review - In depth talks about good books. Roundtables about good books, interviews with authors. Interesting, even when I haven’t read the book.
Planet Money, for the same reasons as everyone else.
The History Chicks - biographies of women we should have learned about in school, but didn’t.
Wait, Wait, Don’t Tell Me - when I need a laugh. Or a lot of laughs.

Re: What Are Your Favorite Podcasts? And Why?
Lots of good suggestions but here are the feeds for finance/retirement that I'm most excited to see new episodes.
- Many happy returns (UK podcaster but covers a lot of US topics and is very boglehead-ish, I also enjoy his UK perspective and some of the differences there are interesting)
- Two sides of FI (two friend, one retired and one not talk about life, finances, struggles)
- Retirement Starts Today (weekly, concise but generally interesting topics)
I would have written a shorter letter, but I did not have the time. |

Re: What Are Your Favorite Podcasts? And Why?
Some of my Fav's....
Choose FI. Great for the younger crowd getting started.
Teach and Retire Rich, because I used to teach.
Talking Real Money. Very solid, Boglehead like advice.
Clark Howard Show. Mostly consumer information with saving and investing tips.
Ready for Retirement. Does case studies for those nearing retirement.
Rational Reminder. When you want a deeper dive into investing theory and practice.

I use the Pocket Casts phone app.
Back to the OP's questions, I like:
- In Our Time. Round-robin discussion with experts. Covers a wide range of topics (history, culture, science, religion, philosophy).
- Econtalk. Not only about economics; also focuses on current events, ideas & philosophy.
- The Rest is History. Usually has multiple episodes to cover a single topic (right now it's Sir Horatio Nelson, tangentially related to Jack Bogle & Bogleheads). Has a good amount of entertaining banter between the two hosts.

In Our Time. A lot of miscellaneous topics
Empire. Covers a lot of ground not often covered in traditional history class.
The History of English. I have paused at episode 165 and we are barely into the 16th century.
The Fall of Civilizations. Turns out a lot didn't make it. More than you might think. Plan accordingly.

Some but not all:
The Podcast by KevinMD -- daily engaging interviews with all kinds of people, especially physicians. A lot of topics are relating to how to improve health care delivery. A little more about business and leadership than most medical podcasts.
White Coat Investor Podcast -- always good information. I appreciate his mission.
The Morgan Housel Podcast -- so simple and yet so valuable
Morningstar the Long View -- what a pleasure to listen to Christine Benz deliver very good interviews with the experts.

The NYT Book Review podcast recently did an interview with Robert Caro. It was fascinating, even though I’ve never read the book. He’s an interesting guy. I keep meaning to read the book, but the wait at the library is like 12 weeks, and even when I get it, there’s no way I could finish it before it’s due.happyisland wrote: ↑Fri Nov 29, 2024 4:33 pm I'm currently listening to the companion piece podcast to Robert Caro's door-stopper book "The Power Broker", by 99% Invisible.
