Can I dispute this charge from Uber

Post by xtallographer »

Last week I went to London and booked a Uber from hotel to the airport. The price I booked was 113 pounds and it was charged the morning of the departure day. The driver picked me up on time and no traffic on the road but I got charged for another 61 pounds after I arrived at the airport. I contacted Uber through the app and they issued me 61 pound credit. The problem is I may not go back to UK again at least I have no such plan for the next a few years, so the Uber credit in pounds cannot be used or may not be used at all. I wish they did not give me the credit but just refund me the extra.

In this case, can I dispute this extra charge in 61 pounds (about $80) with the credit card company?

1st question I have is if the credit is usable in the USA at a converted rate. If they say yes, then I might just go forward with that if you ever use Uber (perhaps on the way home from airport?). If no, I would dispute the entire transaction.

I would also add, and perhaps this has changed since I haven’t taken an Uber in a while, but in my experience when paying with Apple Pay Uber isn’t able to charge you more than you initially approve without further approval from you. So if the charge was $100 and that’s what you approve upfront and then they try to charge you an additional $50, they have to ask you to approve the new amount.

This might depend on which credit card but in my experience of disputes, I would say you would not likely successfully dispute the charge. You got a refund, just not in the form you were hoping for so it would be hard to prove that you were wronged or defrauded of money. YMMV

The credit in pounds cannot be used in US. I have a lot of Uber cash in my app but in UK it shows 0 available - so the Uber cash in USD can only be used in US.

The credit card is Citi premier card. The charged the booking price in early morning that day and then another charge in the evening when I arrived at the airport.

I googled and see many people had this over charge issue from reddit. My case is different because the credit I got is in pounds, not in USD.

In US I was charged a few times extra more than the booking price, without asking for my approval, but usually 5-10 dollars more, which I would not waste time to argue. But this time it is way too much, and there was no traffic at all. We were out before the driver arrived so there was no waiting time.

Have you contacted Uber and asked to have the amount refunded instead of a credit, explaining you won't be back in the UK and have no use for a credit? May not work, but sounds like one of the few paths open to you. I agree a charge back not likely to work

What does Uber’s terms and conditions say?

I do not understand this problem. This exact thing happened to me last month in Mexico. I booked an Uber for 350 pesos. Later, I was charged 250 pesos extra for an improper drop off. (Turned out the driver did not "end" the ride at my destination). I was credited immediately in pesos. The only credit card I have on file is a US credit card so the charge and credit was converted to $USD on my statement.

I feel this is not an honest system - you search in the app and book it with a price marked on the app, and then later it charges you more. In US it seems better. probably I only have limited experiences outside US; maybe most of the time it is good even outside USA

That’s weird. I use Uber overseas regularly and all my transactions are in USD

on my credit card transactions, it is USD. In the app, all charges were in GBP

A charge back can easily get you banned, if that's something you care about

I don't see why you would lose if you dispute it. You did not authorize the extra charge. They did not refund the charge, they are just giving you a credit for Uber which is not the same thing. I would try to get Uber to issue the refund first and if they refuse then try a chargeback.

Finally Uber changed the credit from GBP to USD, so I can use it in US. Now I can accept it.
