Fixing scratches in wood stair railing

Post by Weathering »

Has anyone dealt with fixing scratches in a stained wood stair railing?
I have cat scratches in my stair railing from where my formerly kittens liked to do their catwalk. Of course, they lost their balance a few times and the claws came out. Now, my cats are all grown up and no longer attempt to jump onto the handrail. So, I’m ready to fix it or have it fixed. The scratches are in the varnish (not into the wood) and the varnish is also the stain color. For example, on one banister my kids hands rubbed off the varnish and in that spot the natural wood color shows instead of the stained wood color.
I have a few pics of the scratches for reference, but will need to figure out how to post them.

Have you tried getting one of those wood repair sticks that matches your wood. For lack of a better description they are like crayons. I think they are made for exactly this type of problem.

Try Howard Products. Truly amazing.

It has always been my first go to item before escalation. For scratches use with a Q-tip or just apply to the entire rail.

Matching stains is very hard to do. The cheapest route is to buy a set of wood repair wax crayons mentioned above. If at first you don’t succeed, wipe off and try again. But if in a wear area, the wax will soon be worn off again. Best route is to unscrew the railing and have someone sand and refinish it completely.

If you were to switch to something like a glass balustrade, you wouldn't have to worry about scratches at all. Plus, it would give your stairs a sleek, modern look. Look at this frameless glass balustrade model, it's beautiful!

We’ve hidden many with a thin magic marker, try it in an out of view area.

We used a product called Rejuvenate. It is wood polish that you apply, let set and rub off. It's pretty good at minimizing the appearance of scratches.

To make it look like new, you will need to strip the varnish off, and reapply the stain and polyurethane. They don't sell the GOOD striping solution (ie. contains methylene chloride) to the public in hardware stores anymore.
