Metal “minimalist” wallets?

Post by MCST »

Does anyone have experience with these wallets, the Secrid card protector in particular?

What advantage do these metal card wallets that eject your cards using a button have over a standard small leather card case, especially if you don’t carry cash?

I have a friend that swears by them, but they seem bigger and bulkier given that they are made out of metal.

I highly recommend the carbon fiber wallet by WYN Labs that I’ve been using for 5 years. It’s thin, indestructible, easy to use, and a great value since it’s only $25.

Both my wife and I have the secrid wallets and we like them. No complaints at all.

Sorry, I don’t think I answered your original question. I won’t claim the card eject feature is any sort of advantage. My wife bought one simply because she liked the wallet. I was impressed with how it looked and felt, liked it also, and bought one shortly after. I think it’s a pure “because I like it” purchase and not for some logical reason. Hope that helps!

I bought one from Grip6 about a year or so ago. I love it. The main disadvantage is you can't hold as many things in it as you might in a normal wallet. When I purchased it, I also got an add-on that is on the outside. This lets me hold a couple of additional cards and a $20 bill for those very rare occasions when I need cash. So I keep only the essentials in it.

Cheers.

Why do you want a metal wallet? There are plenty of minimalist wallets made from other materials.

Minimalist wallets only work if you are willing to accept the limitations on how many cards you can carry around with you.

I have a Travelambo soft minimalist wallet and one minor issue I have found with it is that with my current booty curves and junk in the trunk, the cards get a bend to them over time. I just flip them around periodically to even them back out but I would imagine a metal wallet would avoid this issue.

Storus money clip is very compact and light weight. Stainless steel. Holds 6 or 7 cards on one side and a clip for cash on the other.

I use a very compact leather wallet from Saddleback: https://saddlebackleather.com/leather-wallet-mens-front

Very happy with it. 100 year warranty.

I'll be looking at a carbon fiber wallet when mine wears out. Mine is a synthetic fabric wallet I bought in 1980. I figure it's about half way through its life so I'll be looking in what? 2066? I paid eight bucks for this thing, so gotta get my moneys worth out of it.

I used rubber bands for over 10 years. Back when it was just a driver’s license, a little cash, and maybe one credit or debit card. It’s an adequate solution. Now I use a traditional leather wallet. In my town, I have to use cash at many local merchants.

I've switched to metal wallets because of their small size and utility. My old wallets were big and would only work in my back pocket. The metal one goes in my front pocket.
I rarely use cash; I carry it because cash is a problem solver.

I did look at the metal Secrid; it's probably OK. I like my Trayvax better. Here's the Secrid: https://secrid.com/en-us/wallets/cardprotector/

There are hundreds of metal types; buy the one that fits you...or go with the clip or rubber band.

I use a metal wallet...the Trayvax original 2.0.
I carry 9 cards and 18 bills folded into thirds.
It's 4 X 2 1/2 inches. It has a bottle opener and a small pry bar.

The OP asked about the Secrid Cardprotector. This wallet shields contactless credit cards from radio waves.
The aluminum casing protects the cards against bending, breaking and unwanted wireless communication.

I have the Secrid Slimwallet for 3 years now. Works for me. I bought it because a friend recommended it and it was not made in China.
I carry $10 USD in cash, but have not used cash in the USA for over 3 years.
I carry €50 EUR in cash when traveling.

I prefer fabric or leather minamlist wallets so there is a little flex and give, and less *thunking* if it comes in contact with a hard surface through your clothes. They should be a little easier on pocket wear as well.

My current minamalist wallet is a nylon one from Duluth Trading Company. Unfortunately it appears to be discontinued.

I have been using an Ekster Parliment for a couple years and I love it. I used to use basic leather front pocket wallets but those stretch out over time. You can end up dropping cards once it stretches out, or if you reduce the number of cards you carry. With the metal card holder, wrapped in leather, cards are very secure.

I carry multiple cards since I play the miles and points game. With the "step" push button it is very easy to select the card I want from my top five in the main compartment. If you have several old style cards with raised numbers you might only get four in there. Also holds my DL, passport card, work badge, a few more debit/credit/gift cards, and some cash tri-folded in the elastic loop.

One negative is that it will set off the metal detector at the airport, but didn't at an NFL stadium yesterday. I carry several metal credit cards so those will trip at the airport even with just a rubber band.

Honest question, don't rubber bands get "stuck" inside your pants pocket? I hated when I had a phone case that was a grippy material. It wasn't slippery enough to slide easily out of my pocket.

The Ridge Wallet. $75, but it's been really nice.

It holds 3 credit cards, all my insurance cards, gift cards, my access card for my workplace, and comes with a cash strap or money clip for the outside. It's also RFID blocking. It's thin enough for my front pocket and is easy to slide cards out for use. It's indestructible.

I've had both metal and leather minimalist wallets, and prefer the latter. I like minimalist wallets because they work better for front pocket use. Metal just isn't as comfortable as leather or synthetic wallet in the front pocket all day. I use one or two cards for everyday use, so the button feature is immaterial. You can get rfid blocking in a soft side wallet.

If you need to carry a little cash, I tuck a bill in my phone case for the rare occasions when cash is needed. YMMV.

I vote that RFID blocking is not needed.
I think that the wallet makers include it because it sells wallets even though there's no real threat.
My credit cards have to almost touch the reader to work. So a thief with a reader would need to be an inch from my credit card?
I don't see any news about people having problems with RFID theft.

I have this and really like it:
https://nimalist-store.com/collections/ ... 8315861148

Although a bit bulkier than a true minimalist wallet (have some of those if warranted)
I don't really misplace anything, except my wallet for some crazy reason, so the airtag has been great when needed (usually when late leaving the house)

This Dickies wallet is the best I've found.
https://www.walmart.com/ip/Genuine-Dick ... irect=true

It's leather outside and has magnetic plates inside for a tight closure and can be used as money clip.

I never pull out the credit card for modern card readers. I have the cards in the iPhone wallet and pay by putting my iWatch close to the card reader.

I have not found a way to make that work for Ralph's "club" card and WMT requires a physical credit card so I still have to carry the darn cards.

Yes, but I personally consider that a feature, not a bug. :P
My phone case is one of those grippy types. I’m a bit paranoid about things falling out of my pockets, especially when I’m on a motorcycle.

Still on my first wallet (some synthetic fabric, Billabong brand) that I got for my 13th birthday, so we're closing in fast on 30 years. I actually got a Thread wallet https://www.threadwallets.com/?gad_sour ... gJNfPD_BwE as employee SWAG this year, but it's sitting in my bedside table waiting for the original to give up the ghost. 2066 sounds like a good year.

Most folks have too many essentials for one of those thin boxes called a minimal wallet (They used to be called makeup kits and they included a little mirror and were carried in a purse.) Could they even hold a driver’s license, military ID, medicare card, library card, bus pass, insurance card, debit and credit cards, and a spare $100 bill?

Driver’s license - on my iPhone with a state created app
Medicare card - on my phone as a PDF
Insurance cards - on phone as PDFs
Debit/credit cards - in Apple wallet

Actually, I do. Walmart thinks it is special and does not take Apple Pay.
And my wallet contains 3 "social cards" as I no longer have business cards.

At least Walmart allows one to set up Walmart Pay if they wish to “pay by phone.”. I do not believe that either our Home Depot or Lowe’s have any option other than a physical card slid into a physical slot.

I use a Slim Fold Tyvek Micro.

https://www.slimfoldwallet.com/products ... 3586575405

I found the metal ones couldn't hold anything not a card well. The card eject feature wasn't all that useful.

The Tyvek is lighter/smaller than the Soft Shell model.

Second for Ridge. Quality minimalist wallet with RFID block; it will hold just a couple cards securely, or a lot of cards. It's secure. I recommend the cash strap, as it too is sturdy and can also hold just a few bills, or a bunch, securely.

I tried the one with the eject buttons, but it was too big to put in my front pocket.

I went with a "U" shaped metal wallet called the Decadent Minimalist made from aluminum. They carry 5 cards, 8 cards, or 12 cards. I don't use cash very often and just slip a $20 folded bill between the cards if I need cash in an emergency.
