Carry on luggage

Post by LetsGoHiking »

I have a much loved Náutica soft sided carry on bag that I bought at TJ Maxx 8 yrs ago and have used multiple times a year for travel. I hate checking my bags and always carry on. I never have a problem bringing the bag on board in the US but in other countries like Europe for example they take one look at it and announce it won’t fit in carry on bins even though I had no problem doing so on the exact plane a week ago. So they make me check it.

So, I need a bag that has max space but looks slim 🤣 not a backpack because I already carry an Osprey day pack on my travels. Maybe something hard sided? Straps to cinch it down to minimize bulge? I don’t have a wheel preference.

Thank you!

Mystery Ranch makes nice travel bags that are functional. They come in carryon sizes.

in the US the suitcases you get at any TJ Max, etc are ok (22x14x9); internationally it's all over the place. Here's a chart by airline:

One other thing to keep in mind not only are some international airlines carryon requirements smaller they also have weight limits as well and these weight limits are often enforced and can be more limiting than the smaller size, especially if your empty bag is heavy-ish to begin with (e.g., roll-aboards). I have used the Tom Bihn Aeronaut 35L and have been to probably 40-ish countries with it at this point, many airlines and so far zero issues. It has been weighed once but because I was flying business class and had a higher weight limit I was ok but if I had been in economy I might have had an issue. I have a very light but strong daypack I keep in my carry one that would count as a personal item so I am ready to split my stuff if needed to meet weight requirements or to take fragile/valuable stuff on the plane if bag has to go in hold.

Travelpro is the brand that airline employees typically use. Travelprol bags slip into the tiny sizing slot. We have the bags and can live comfortably out of them for 2 weeks. They sell them on Amazon or their website.

My Travelpro crew bag is 40 years old. Replaced the wheels and zipper pull, that is it.

Love the 19" Travelpro Platinum Elite we bought last year. Between my wife and I, it's probably been on 10-12 trips in that time, most 5 or 6 days. It easily takes everything we need for those weeklong trips, with room to bring some additional stuff back. The cinching mechanism works really really well. And it meets the international carryon size requirements, so should not be an issue flying overseas. We actually bought it because our existing carryons were larger than we needed for most of these trips.

For my trip this week, I'm going to try out the Tumi 19 Degree international carryon that I got as a work anniversary gift. I can report back on how I like it.

Ran into this many times. One time I remember a Lufthansa flight no problem and Swiss Air wouldn't let me board with the exact same carry-on -- even with some level of Star Alliance status.

Away and Monos are two brands making high quality, if expensive, hard sided bags. They both have US and International sized carry ons.

My Away carry-on has been great. While not exactly cheap, Away and Monos are quite a bit less than Tumi, Rimowa, and Briggs and Riley - around $300 vs $500-700.

Another brand to consider is Eagle Creek. They have a very good warranty, and make ones that are slim enough for international carryon, however, they are not hard-sided.

I use to use the Eagle Creek Duffel that was a previous version to the following: https://www.eaglecreek.com/products/car ... 6828297353

Put a 30L bag inside of it when going through the airport. The use the 30L bag for carry-on. The 60L will then squish anywhere in the overhead compartment.

I now use an LLBean 60L travel bag since it is more durable. I was happy with the Eagle Creek bag.

The airline are gloriously inconsistent in enforcing their standards in my experience. For example I flown TAP Portugal several times in the last couple of years. From LIS back to USA I have seen:

1). Anything goes.
2). Gate agents swept waiting area for all wheeled luggage and enforced it being checked unless you were in business and size didn't matter if it was wheeled (or was very large) it was checked (this was for folks who got there early-ish at some point they lost interest and later arrivals were able to board with their baggage). Since I didn't have wheeled luggage (one reason is it is lower profile) I was left alone (I was in business class anyway but the gate agents didn't know that). There wasn't any charge for this gate check.
3). Everybody had their baggage weighed at gate and those with bags exceeding the weight had to check it and they were charged some amount of money not sure how much but some folks were spun up. I was right at the limit so I was ok.
4). Non-business class folks were required to put their luggage in a sizer. If it didn't fit it had to be gate checked and there was a charge.

I have seen no enforcement of anything at any of the outstations the above was always in Lisbon.

So YMMV.

Carry on size on some non-US/Can airlines are smaller.

Many thanks for sharing that link. As the first leg of our EU return is economy-class only, I rushed to measure our carryons. Fortunately, they are within specs. :)
