Washington DC restaurant (and other) recommendations
Bogleheads have always come through with the best travel recommendations.
Does anyone have any restaurants that they like? Am not renting a car and will be walking distance to Georgetown, Foggy Botton, and Dupont Circle. Doesn't have to be fancy.
Also, does anyone know if there are shared shuttles to and from the airport? Will be arriving at IAD and leaving from DCA. Have used Super Shuttle in the past, but it looks like they have closed down. It looks like a taxi is the way to go/most convenient?

Haven't been to DC in several years, but Founding Farmers and CIRCA were both really good and near Foggy Bottom.

Il Canale (Georgetown)
Jaleo (The Jaleo Experience Menu $85pp) (take an uber)
I'd go with Uber to/from the airport

DC native here. I always take a taxi to DCA. Taxis are usually less expensive and the drivers are usually excellent, but Uber/Lyft is more than fine.
As far as restaurants, here are my favorites. All are relatively convenient to Georgetown/Foggy Bottom:
Maydan (Middle Eastern)
Rasika (Indian)
Zaytinya (Mediterranean)
2 Amys (Authentic Neapolitan pizza - get the "suppli al telefono" rice balls as a starter)
Other posters have suggested Founding Farmers and Filomena in Georgetown. Both are fine. My preference would be Fiola Mare, which is just steps away from Founding Farmers on the Georgetown waterfront.
Sometimes getting to Arlington is easier and faster. Here are a few recommendations if you end up on that side of the Potomac:
Lyon Hall (French)
Sfoglina (Italian)

There's so many good places in those areas alone, that I don't know where to begin, but I always recommend Ethiopian to DC visitors. It's one of those things that DC has in quantity and high quality that most other cities do not have. Dukem and Zenebech are both good options.
In general though, check out the Washingtonian Magazine or Washington Post dining section to fine tune your recommendations based on cuisine and specific areas.

When I go to DC and want to try somewhere new, I like to cross reference Washingtonian Magazine's 100 best cheap eats, https://www.washingtonian.com/2018/08/2 ... ington-dc/ with their 100 best restaurants, https://www.washingtonian.com/2023/01/2 ... ington-dc/.

Do you tend to prefer classics or trendy when traveling?DidItMyWay wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 9:17 am

On the classics side of the ledger, I agree with the Filomena suggestions upthread. Old Ebbitt Grill is another if you find yourself venturing toward the White House from Foggy Bottom. Second using the Washingtonian per Caffeperfavore's suggestion to screen trendy options that are executing well.

We've found the metro to be excellent transportation to/from D.C. area airports. They are generally easy, on-time and affordable. Here's a link: https://www.wmata.com/rider-guide/airport-and-rail/

All good recommendations on this list but this is my absolute favorite restaurant in DC.
I almost always do metro to/from the airport, typically works very well.

Everyone takes Uber or Lyft, or if they want to be economical, the Metro, which now extends all the way to IAD.DidItMyWay wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 9:17 am Bogleheads have always come through with the best travel recommendations.

DC has a million great restaurants. Several have already been mentioned in this thread. Others: https://www.washingtonpost.com/food/int ... omsietsema
Re: Washington DC restaurant (and other) recommendations
DC local here.
If you have more adventurous tastes, I would try an Ethiopian restaurant. DC has the largest Ethiopian community in the US.
Das in Georgetown is a one of the fancier Ethiopian restaurants in DC, but still reasonable. Similarly, Rasika has some great Indian food.
Founding Farmers is a local chain and the food comes across as that. Great for those who like the tried and true. Not my thing. Why go to DC to taste food that you could get back home?

José Andres is a famous chef headquartered in DC. He has several Tapas restaurants in the Penn Quarter area of DC. You can't go wrong with any of them.
Jaleo (mentioned above) - Spanish Tapas
Zaytina (mentioned above) - Greek Tapas
Oyamel - Mexican Tapas
Chile Chilcano
Rasika (mentioned above), not a José Andres restaurant or a Tapas, is also in Penn Quarter and worth an examination as well.

Was just in DC recently with the family. I highly highly highly recommend Filomena’s. Make sure to leave room for dessert.

...and [many] miles to go before I retire.
Re: Washington DC restaurant (and other) recommendations
A few years ago, near Georgetown University, we had Indian fusion at a Nepali-owned franchise - Curry & Pie. My favorite --> Saag Paneer Pizza. Last year, we ordered the same pizza from the chain's other location - Elkridge, closer to BWI airport, and it was as tasty.sunshine631 wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 10:00 am DC native here. If you don't have a lot of luggage and are close to a metro station, I definitely suggest the metro to DCA.DidItMyWay wrote: ↑Thu May 25, 2023 9:17 am Bogleheads have always come through with the best travel recommendations.

DC has a Michelin guide now: https://guide.michelin.com/us/en/distri ... estaurants
You probably won’t go wrong at any of those places.
Also, if you are staying downtown, just take the Metro to DCA. The new Metro line to IAD just opened a few months ago too. Something like $2-$4 from downtown. Much cheaper than Uber or a taxi.

Re: Washington DC restaurant (and other) recommendations
Thanks, all.
I would have looked into taking the metro from IAD but am traveling with a family member who has a lot of luggage. We ended up taking a taxi and, although it wasn't inexpensive, it worked out well. Was fast and efficient. I am flying back by myself though so will look into the metro to DCA.
Lots of restaurants here to consider. Will definitely check some of these out

Re: Washington DC restaurant (and other) recommendations
Founding Farmers food is not all that great.
For a casual or takeout meal in either Georgetown or DuPont Circle, you might try Moby Dick House of Kabobs. I really miss Moby Dick where I live now. Their hummus is maybe the best I've had. I'm partial to the Kubideh kabob, but the steak and chicken are also great.
Go to the Washington Post website and look up what what the food critic, Tom Sietsema, is saying.
