Favorite music from the 1980s?

Post by tenkuky »

Given the threads of the 60s and 70s, I want to start this so our younger Bogleheads do not assume we are old geezers who can't appreciate new(er) music. And yes, 1980s, for those who want to post about the 1780s and 1880s

I'll go first.
Albums
Thriller- Michael Jackson (1982)
Diesel & Dust - Midnight Oil (1987)
The Joshua Tree - U2 (1987)
Back in Black - AC/DC (1980)
Synchronicity - The Police (1983)
Moving Pictures - Rush (1981)
Appetite for Destruction - Guns N' Roses (1987)

Songs
Don't Stop Believing - Journey (1981)
Living on a Prayer- Bon Jovi (1986)
Sweet Dreams - Eurythmics (1983)
We are the World - USA for Africa (1985)
Once in a Lifetime - Talking Heads (1981)
Fight for Your Right (to Party) - Beastie Boys (1986)
Handle with Care - Traveling Wilburys (1988)

for all these threads, I suspect most of the songs will be among the top 500 songs of the date range. After all, if the songs are favorites, then they should already be in a list. So for more fun, only list songs not in an existing list.

Here are a few existing lists: https://www.google.com/search?q=top+500 ... om+the+80s

Footloose (1984)
Top Gun (1986)
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Another soundtrack song:
"We Don't Need Another Hero (Thunderdome)" by Tina Turner

Best name-changer:
Prince with such songs as "1999", "When Doves Cry", "Little Red Corvette","Let's Go Crazy"

Best song to laugh at:
"Jessie's Girl" by Rick Springfield

Best sneerer:
Billy Idol with such songs as "White Wedding", "Mony Mony"

Another kind of sneerer:
Tom Petty with "Free Fallin'"

"Abacab" by Genesis was one of my binge albums.

Just yesterday, I went to a concert featuring 80s hits.

A couple of songs fresh on my mind from that:

Jump -- Van Halen
Living on a Prayer -- Bon Jovi

It is easier and less time consuming to list whatever songs one chooses then to go through a list of 500 to see if your songs are listed.

Read somewhere that the reason people are so into or get nostalgic about 80s music as a genre is because it’s the last era of pop music before hip-hop/r&b took over.

That being said, some songs I like in no particular order:

Don’t You Want Me - The Human League
Walk Like An Egyptian - The Bangles
Tainted Love - Soft Cell
(I Just) Died In Your Arms - Cutting Crew
Don’t Dream It’s Over - Crowded House
Venus - Bananarama
Self Control - Laura Branigan
Tarzan Boy - Baltimora
Who Can It Be Now? - Men At Work
Red Red Wine - UB40
Enjoy the Silence - Depeche Mode
Take On Me - A-ha
Etc.

A lot of 80s music gets played on our local ‘Classic Rock’ radio station

The 80s music scene gave birth to another entire form of expressing music that really added to the experience: MTV.
Herewith the very first MTV video, August 1, 1981:

In 1980 I moved to Texas and got off the highway in Pasadena Texas very close to Gilley's the original honky-tonk that was featured in Urban Cowboy. Initially I was so busy with my new job that I moved into the first apartment building I could find when I got off the highway. The story was that the parking lot of Gilley's was paved with gravel and teeth. lol

Barbara Mandrell ... I Was Country When Country Wasn't Cool 1981
Willie Nelson
many others

I learned the Texas Two-Step and country music was so popular there were always plenty of dances all over the place.

As the oil companies supported other music venues in downtown Houston, I had season tickets to the opera and symphony.

Younger Bogleheads? I’m 51 and I rarely grab a record that was made before 1990. I just bought 3 tickets to go see a show (wife wife and 25 year old daughter) by a band who is going to play their 25 yo masterpiece in its entirety.

Pavement is touring.
Modest Mouse is touring.
Archers of Loaf is touring.
Guided by Voices is touring.
Built to Spill is touring.
Superchunk is touring.
Yo La Tengo is touring.
Afghan Whigs is touring.
Dinosaur Jr is touring.
Those bands probably made at least 10-15 of the 50 most influential records of the 30 years. Go see them play live! Support the bands you love.

Most of the best rock from the 90s is stuff most rock fans over the age of 50 have heard very little of.

What I love is to look at the influences backward and forward. So looking through the 60s, 70s and 80s threads,
Velvet Underground influenced Talking Heads influenced Modest Mouse.

A terrific exhibit at Cleveland's RnR Hall of Fame has "Influencers" which details iconic bands and who influenced them.
That would be another fun Boglehead activity, go through the threads and piece influences.

How about The Who influenced U2 influenced Coldplay
Or
The Kinks influenced The Ramones influenced Nirvana :sharebeer

I graduated from high school in 1991 so I got to listen to the gamut of 80s music while growing up. I liked more than I disliked and even the stupid songs are tied to good memories.

Early 80s I’m not quite as in tune with.

Some how I didn’t see Def Leppard, Guns N Roses, Motley Crue, Cinderella, Skid Row, Poison, Warrant, and similar hard rock bands in many of the above lists.

Also…Tone Loc and the brilliant Aerosmith and Run DMC Colab. Beastie Boys were great, Cyndi Lauoer, and even radio pop like Tiffany, Martina, and Debbie Gibson.

B52s were just fun music….I could go on and on. Pet Shop Boys had a ton of hits globally.

Not a Michael Jackson or Prince fan though…also a hard pass on U2.

I don’t disagree that 80s rock and pop has heavily influenced todays bands.

Exhibit A: This randomly chosen new song by an obscure Australian band has 80s dripping all over it. In fact, it’s probably just as good as most of the music that influenced it. Still, pretty much nobody will ever hear it since 40+ year old music lovers are not seeking anything new.

In grade/middle school, my favorite 80s songs were:
Jessie's Girl- Rick Springfield
The Tide is High- Blondie
Africa-Toto
Missing You-John Waite
Time After Time- Cyndi Lauper
We Belong- Pat Benatar
Don't Dream It's Over- Crowded House
Mary's Prayer- Danny Wilson
When Doves Cry/Let's Go Crazy/When U Were Mine/Little Red Corvette/I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man- Prince
The entire Footloose soundtrack
The entire Chicago 17 album
An Innocent Man (album)- Billy Joel
Synchronicity (album)- The Police

I could list a lot more I'm sure! That's what I remember off the top of my head. The albums listed are the ones I actually owned. I had to save my money to buy those cassette tapes lol.

Once I got into HS in the late 80s, I started liking The Smiths, The Beastie Boys, The Cure, New Order, The Pixies, REM, etc.

That would be another fun Boglehead activity, go through the threads and piece influences.

How about The Who influenced U2 influenced Coldplay
Or
The Kinks influenced The Ramones influenced Nirvana :sharebeer
I don’t disagree that 80s rock and pop has heavily influenced todays bands.

Exhibit A: This randomly chosen new song by an obscure Australian band has 80s dripping all over it. In fact, it’s probably just as good as most of the music that influenced it. Still, pretty much nobody will ever hear it since 40+ year old music lovers are not seeking anything new.

80s was the best decade for reggae.

Steel Pulse
The Viceroys
Dennis Brown
Aswad
Israel Vibration
Eek-A-Mouse

and many more. Completely relaxing music.

Outside of reggae, there's:

Depeche Mode
Kate Bush
Stevie Ray Vaughan
David Sylvian
Metallica and many other metal bands doing their best work

Dire Straits - all three '80s albums: Making Movies, Love over Gold and most especially Brothers in Arms
Living Colour - Vivid
Tracy Chapman - Tracy Chapman
Soundgarden - Louder than Love
Violent Femmes - Violent Femmes
Pet Shop Boys - Please
Phil Collins - Face Value

I have all of the Dire Straits albums.

"Brother's In Arms" by Dire Straits (Marti Knopfler) is an incredibly touching and beautiful song. :D

Marti Knopfler is a great songwriter and guitarist.
Chet Atkins once said of him; "he writes all the songs and notes, and plays all the notes", something like that.
There's a youtube video of Knopfler and Chet Atkins doing an acoustic duet.
Knopfler more than holds his own even doing Chet's legendary smooth "sweeps" on the guitar.

Yeah, I was into new wave music back in the day (and still sort of love it).
OMD Architecture and Morality and Dazzle Ships
Altered Images band
Depeche Mode anything with Alan Wilder in the band
Siuoxhie and the Banshees
Haircut 100 Love plus One
New Order
Frankie Goes to Hollywood
Martha and the Muffins- Saigon, Was Ezo and Echo Beach
Duran Duran
So Red Was The Rose-Duran Duran in disguise -one of the best albums I've listened to music-wise
Berlin
Adam Ant
Klark Kent-Stewary Copeland in disguise before The Police took off
The Police-Regatta de Blanc
Flock of Seagulls
Missing Persons
The Cure

Australians: Split Enz, Men at Work, INX

Yes, I'm a new wave music gal, consider that music my music and very unique for that time.
I still listen to it and go to concerts of the bands still around. OMD had gotten better over time and written great new music that is like the original stuff but better -kind of like a nice aged scotch.

Chet Atkins, The Everlys, Mark Knopler and Michael McDonald; Chet plays a few guitar solos and then they all sing Why Worry written by Mark Knopfler for the Everlys even though Mark also sang it himself.
