Favorite Free Online Games
Was wondering what is your favorite free online games for adults. Currently enjoy Scrabble and Wordle online and am looking to expand…nothing too sophisticated.

Re: Favorite Free Online Games
Are you only interested in games you can play in a browser? What about games on an iPad or phone?

Re: Favorite Free Online Games
I play Spelling Bee and Wordle daily on the NYT, as well as Outspell, Mahjong Solitaire, and Freecell Solitaire on WAPO. I have subscriptions to both publications online. I found Wordle on my Iphone to have too many ads and redirects to other games.
I've enjoyed Bejeweled but find it too risky to install on my iMac. I used to play it on my PC laptop, having bought the disc, but that was when dinosaurs roamed the earth and when computers still had CD drives. I see a lot of complaints from long term players of Bejeweled that they are being bombarded with ads.

Re: Favorite Free Online Games
When you say free, do you mean free from any initial cost or free from ongoing subscription costs, or both?
Quordle is 4-word Wordle. Nerdle is math Wordle.
Rummikub is fun, and isn’t word-based.
I subscribe to the NYT games section. At $40/year, it’s well worth the 10 cents per day.
All played on my iPad.

Agreed. If you're crossword person, it's well worth it.delamer wrote: Thu Jun 09, 2022 10:09 am I subscribe to the NYT games section. At $40/year, it’s well worth the 10 cents per day.
(And sure beats having to buy a whole dang newspaper just to do the puzzle like I had to back in the day!)
I'll also point out that AARP has a whole section for online games: https://games.aarp.org/ They're apparently "free" apart from having to watch an ad.

Heardle is like name that tune. I love it; there are enough songs recognizable by people my age to keep it fun.
Recently found A Dark Room which is a text based adventure game. Man it's getting hard though.

Totally out of left field but if you enjoy simple games online have you considered giving more in-depth computer or console games a try? You might like it.
I have accumulated enough great games to last me probably 10 years. I am now a digital hoarder and the same for kindle books on sale
Not something I am proud of but hard to quit when there is so much great content to be gotten right now.
There are so many great games now for very little cost. Far from free but you might even enjoy a Nintendo switch.
Games I am playing currently:
1. Subnautica on the PC
2. Starfox SNES version ported to Switch
3. Working through Chrono Trigger RPG again on the IPAD
4. Cities Skylines on the PC
and a LONG, LONG list to go...

Don't know if there's an ios version for your ipad, but on my android tablet I play Cannon Balls 3D by Famobi. It's addictive (just one more try), but gets very hard above several hundred levels so I just uninstall/install and start over.tennisplyr wrote: Thu Jun 09, 2022 11:28 am Looking for games for my iPad, not necessarily word games…don’t care about ads but no fees.
I tried other "cannon" games but like the one above best.
NY times mini crossword
Solitaire by mobilityWare
free cell by mobilityWare
marble blast by blackout lab
nonogram.com
I also do the NYT and WSJ x-words, but online at their sites, so through paid subscriptions.
Lots of old games I used to play that no longer work: desktop tower defense!
enough!
Re: Favorite Free Online Games
Another vote for The New York Times puzzle/games page, although I don't subscribe.
I play Wordle, Letter Boxed, Sudoku-Medium and Sudoku-Hard there.
Then I play Worldle, which is a geography game where they give you a country outline, you guess, and they tell you how many miles off you are, and what direction.
Then there's Dordle, a two-word Wordle, and then Quordle, a 4-word Wordle.
Googling any of the game names will take you to the page they're on.

THE DARK MOD
This is a great game that is free, open source, community developed, challenging and visually stunning. You play the role of a thief in the 1600's and the goal is to stealthily navigate your way into various buildings, museums, churches, banks, catacombs etc. to "collect" your treasures while avoiding armed guards and other difficult obstacles.
Even though the premise of thievery is wrong, the game emphasizes problem solving and critical thinking. So it's a better alternative than other violent games. For example, in one mission, you find yourself locked in a courtyard next to a castle. How do you get out? How do you get into the castle? Well, you take old wooden crates that are lying around, stack them like a staircase to get on a ledge. Then you tip-toe around the ledge to find an open window, then you throw a rope onto a wooden beam, climb up and swing into the open window of the castle. Once inside, you have to find keys and levers to open certain doors and passageways, all the while collecting as many treasures as possible while not being discovered by the guards.
The game comes with a few missions as well as a training demo, but you can download many other user created missions from the game itself.

OP somewhat subtly and perhaps unintentionally implied that.delamer wrote: Fri Jun 10, 2022 9:16 pmDid someone on the thread put forth the idea that “games for adults need to be unsophisticated spelling games?”dboeger1 wrote: Fri Jun 10, 2022 6:26 pm As a lifelong avid gamer, I have to challenge the notion that games for adults need to be unsophisticated spelling games.
I almost typed up a storm but held my proverbial tongue. The suggestions others provided are fine given that what OP is looking for are what gamers refer to as "casual games".
I'll share a quick story. Several years ago, I was looking for a group of people to play online with. I posted online and got in with a group of older gentlemen, I forget the name, it was something like Grumpy Old Men, and they were all fathers, grandfathers, etc. One guy in particular had been suffering from terrible cancer ever since shortly after retiring from a long career in auto manufacturing that had him traveling the world to manage factories in other countries. He probably should've died years before then given how bad his health was, but he was desperately trying to live long enough to have grandchildren from his son and daughter-in-law who were having fertility issues. We would often have long conversations about work, family, relationships, travel, you name it. I told him once that I was surprised how modern of a gamer he was given his age and how much he clearly worked over the years, but he insisted he had always been a gamer and kept up to date with the latest trends. In games, he was the slowest among us, and we would always end up chatting about life while waiting for him to do his inventory management or whatever. Sadly, he would also have frequent health issues and we would overhear really disturbing sounds through his headset, but we all cared for the guy and would never have abandoned him over that. He was a big fan of the Destiny series of online shooters, and we spent months training him before he was finally able to successfully complete a raid, because his hands were too shaky and imprecise to jump between suspended platforms.
One day, he went silent, but one of the group members was able to contact him and verify that he was still alive, just not well enough to play anymore. Years later, I found out he died shortly after. So yeah, it bugs me a little when I see stores putting games (many of which couldn't be more obviously targeted at mature audiences) under categories like children's toys. I guess everyone who likes boats plays with rubber duckies in the bathtub, too?

You don't need to go to Slickdeals.net for Epic games. You can just go to http://www.epicgames.com directly. They release their free game of the week on Thursdays.sleepy06 wrote: Thu Jun 09, 2022 8:51 pm Totally out of left field but if you enjoy simple games online have you considered giving more in-depth computer or console games a try? Check slickdeals.net for free Epic games if you have a computer that can run them. These are top quality games that can last keep you busy for a very long time.
Buy Steam games on Sale that can run on your computer (not free but minimal cost)

Some of the free games have been older hits, like Tomb Raider series, Star Wars games, Civilization, Grand Theft Auto series, and others. I think the current one is a shark game (you're the shark), but it will change to something new tomorrow.

DW plays something called June Journey, is in a group with all her friends. There is some coordination for something called Cafe hour, where they all get on at the same time, (internationally at the same time, some friends are in Europe). I think it's mostly seniors that play this game.
