any suggestions for best 65" TV under $1000?

Hi all - my TV rang in 2021 by giving up the ghost. Any reccos on decent quality, good brand 65" TV in $600-1000 range for someone who just watches movies/TV shows? Not a gamer or an app user, other than streaming device - which I could sell if TV OS is good

AM SEEKING:
Decent screen brightness (Room gets a fair amount of light)
OK sound (I know today's TVs don't have great sound - just looking for acceptable - I like volume on quieter side anyway. May get a soundbar eventually.)

Any brands to avoid? Any with known reputations for early failure? (Like I wished I knew before buying my *%@# LG fridge )

NO OLED: I'm sure it's great! Just too high a pricepoint for 65" and don't want to settle for a smaller screen.

Reviewed rtings.com, tom's guide, Cnet, but they praise or criticize features I'm not sure will matter much to a low maintenance user like me. BH tips are usually the most helpful/level headed.

Not looking for entry level or cheapest - just a decent value for the price range. Thanks for any wisdom you can send my way - hoping this helps others as well!

M series is good (older ones used to be their top of the line, but then they made the P set of series and cheapened the M series a bit)
P/PQ/Q/PQ-X = high quality

I have a P/PQ/PQ-X series 65. i really like it, but if money is an issue, the M series is reasonable option. if you don't mind spending $1k, then the P series is great.

I always just buy the largest TV for the least amount of money from any company regardless of name because most TVs are made at and by the same factories. I just read the reviews. Walmart has a 70 inch for $448. I know it is slightly larger than 65 inch.

The Sony X900F is a great 4k TV with impressive picture quality, especially in a dark room due to the high native contrast ratio and full array local dimming support. The TV excels at HDR as it can produce bright, vivid highlights. Motion handling is also excellent due to the fast response time and ability to flicker the backlight to clear up motion. The main negative is the narrow viewing angle, so the best image quality is reserved for those directly in front of the TV.

TCL 65" ROKU owner here. Not sure if this falls into your "don't want" list but has been a great tv for us thus far - ~18mo ownership. Do have an LG sound bar as the stock sound is somewhat stale.
If a costco member, i'd go in store with a budget number in mind - look at displays and make a decision. They offer the best warranties.

Another vote for the TCL Roku TV. I have a 55" 4 series, which was on a ridiculous sale at Black Friday. I am not a techie and do not get into all the nitty gritty details of these things, but it's pretty darn good.

I have the TCL/Roku 65 inch series 8. I got it on sale for 1k, used to go for 2. Looks like it is down to 1.5k, on clearance sale now for 1.1k. Like it a lot. Compare it to the series 6 and see if it is worth the extra 200 to you.

I've always liked the LG brand. Currently have an LG 65UM7300PUA, 65", smart 4K LED that I got on sale for $350. I don't think it's available now, but LG is a good reasonably priced brand to look at. If you're not looking for the latest gadgets or technology, then shopping for a discontinued model can get you a cheaper price.

These days it's hard to go wrong with TVs. Just about any 4K TV with local dimming is going to look pretty darn good. I do like the built in Roku capability of my TCL. It was ~$600 on a cyber Monday deal in 2019.

People get really into OLEDs and plasmas and such, but looking at an OLED side by side with the local dimming LEDs never had much "wow" effect to me. I had to struggle to appreciate differences.

I have two Vizio 65" M series (M658-G1, which is the 2019 version). It is fabulous - we have one in the living room (bright, sometimes direct light) and one in the master bedroom, watch at night/dark room. One thing I like is that it has dolby vision, which I feel like is better than HDR10 (though that could be because dolby vision seems to set its own picture settings and it could be my own HDR10 setup is not optimal).

In any case, this is a great TV at a great price.

I’ve never had a roku tv ( but love the roku boxes). However, I believe in having a separate streaming box. As the tech changes it’s easier to just replace the streaming boxes

I don't think there's much of a premium cost to getting a TV with Roku built in as far as I know, and if there's a problem you can still buy a separate streaming box and use it. I wouldn't make it a huge factor either way IMO, though all else being equal I like having the built in Roku.

I would get the largest LG OLED that fits in your budget. At least go watch some 4K HDR content on an LG OLED before you make your decision.

If you never watch 4k content sources, then I guess it's not going to matter much, though even 1080p looks quite a bit better, especially content with light/dark scenes

My 65" (highly rated) Vizio has terrible sound, I had to buy a sound bar the same week because it was so bad.

I bought a cheap and on sale 50" Samsung for "my" room and the sound is good enough that I haven't even bothered to set up my 7.1 system. I'm not saying the sound is great, only that for watching typical TV shows at lower sound levels it does well.

Most TVs are good enough for average use, even the lower priced bargain models.

thank you all - lots of good suggestions to pore through. Don't have a costco membership - do have sam's Been keeping an eye on Slick deals website - so many posted deals are costco! I guess I could buy a costco membership just for this - just wouldn't use it for other stuff, as there isn't one near me.

I notice Sams has SOME of the same sets costco does - but not all. Sam's also bumps up the warranty - a bonus incentive to buy there vs BB or others with just the 1 year.

Wondering if there may be more deals the last week of Jan/first week of Feb for superbowl wknd...that's why I'm trying to narrow down some potential models to watch now.

I can't afford Kuro at $600 0 10 years ago. Recently I bought two Kuro and hopefully OLED 8K 65in will drop to $1500 level soon.

We also bought a smaller than 65" from Best Buy, delivered to our room in our home, for under $800.

I second this, probably one of the best non-oled TVs one can buy and incredible bang for the buck if goes on sale at $969 again. The total warranty can be 7 years if purchased with the Costco Citi card, with first 5 years covered by Sony, the last 2 covered by the credit card.

In addition to general lack of availability (you can't just go to Best Buy and pick one up!), there are numerous drawbacks to such tv's, as noted by alfaspider. Add to that reliability concerns for a 12 year old product (no warranty), as well as difficulty in getting parts and repair. Plasma's had their time in the sun, and they were glorious, but technology has moved on.

I second the Samsung QLED. I picked up the 55” a few month ago at Costco (under $800) and the picture is outstanding. Sound is not very good so got a Samsung sound bar and subwoofer that has an HDMI (ARC?) connection for about $175. Works great.

agreed - our TV that died was a plasma...it was a lower end model, but still great. Costs to repair were 350-500, with no guarantee something else wouldn't go. No interest in attempting DIY diagnosis and repairs. If plasmas were still a thing with plenty of new choices, I'd go for it.

OP... Back in October my Samsung 55” UHD tv of 5 years exposed the dreaded white spots on the screen. Couldn’t believe didn’t last 5 years. Started loooking at LG.
I bought an LG nanocell 90 65” for $1200. After 5 days I brought it back as I was not happy with the screen. I then bought a LGUN7000 65” for $499 and I love this tv. Not sure why a tv that’s half the price would have a better picture (although it did have a remote that had less functions than the Nanocell 90) but I strongly recommend this tv. Definitely can’t beat the price.

I regret getting Samsung TV. Its HDMI-CEC doesn't work well with older devices. I googled it and found it's a common issue.

TCL Roku 65 inch. I love the picture. I paid $525 at Costco.

I have bought many high end brands before and this picture is just as good if not better. Having said that I'm not a tech type guy and I usually like the simple gadgets rather then one with all the bells and whistles. This is great due to the very easy to understand Roku interface and remote.

I bought a TCL 65 ROKU at Sam's Club before Christmas for $420. I don't know what it sounds like because I never used the on-board speakers. The picture is nice (I'm not a connosseur, but I can't tell the difference between this and the OLEDs or Quattrons we use at work.)

Thank you for the continued suggestions! Been checking them out - quite a few are out of stock right now. Others have a 1 year warranty, which normally isn't a big deal, but w/several sets recommended in this thread that do offer a longer 3-5 year warranty at Costco and Sams, kinda holding out for that.

Frontrunner is definitely that Sony X90C! But if it doesn't go on sale by mid Feb, I'll just go with another good recco from this thread - probably Vizio P Quantum - I understand there's an "X" version of that Vizio Quantum for 50-100 more that's supposedly even better - breaks my 1k limit, but only by $79.

Those $400-600 range TVs are so tempting and likely totally fine for my needs, but given this is my main set and will hopefully last a few years, I'm going to indulge in a bit of lifestyle creep and hold out for a few extra features like bluetooth/earbud capability those sets don't offer.

One feature that I really like (but knew nothing about going in, so just got lucky that this TV has it) is built-in Apple Airplay. This allows me to wirelessly project whatever I'm doing on the phone or laptop onto the TV. If you have Apple devices, this is worth looking out for.

I don't use any HDMI connections, everything is streamed through built-in apps. I went from no TV to this one so picture quality is phenomenal as far as I'm concerned. Built-in sound is also good enough.
