Favorite Science Fiction Movies

Post by OpenMinded1 »

A couple of mine would be Interstellar and Contact. I especially like the ones involving space travel, other planets, extraterrestrial life etc. Any recommendations?

Ad Astra fits the bill nicely.

See also Moon, Event Horizon (horror), Pandorum (also horror), Chronicles of Riddick, Stargate, the Alien series.

Some of my favorite sci fi shows are the superb The Expanse (on Amazon) and the classic Babylon 5.

I concur on "Moon", one of the best in the last decade or so.
If you want to go back a few years, try "Colossus: the Forbin Project" or "The Andromeda Strain".

All the CGI in todays movies does absolutely nothing for me, it frequently serves as a distraction due to the absence or weakness of plot or structure. My science fiction favorites:

The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951)
Invaders from Mars (1953)
This Island Earth (1955)
Forbidden Planet (1956)

I saw them all for the first time on TV as a child many years after their initial release and many times since then, they are my eternal favorites. A couple have been remade with terrible results. The original "Twilight Zone" and "Alfred Hitchcock" TV series also endure as my dramatic favorites since there is nothing to distract from the storyline.

We are about to watch "The Vast of Night" - I'll report back if it's any good.

A recent indie I liked a lot was "Coherence".

Alien and Aliens are both close to masterpieces. I was born the year Alien was released, but it still holds up.

Yes! Can't believe I forgot this one!

Also, another TV show I love is Westworld. Not so much space but heavy on the scifi

Currently watching Dark on Netflix. Superb, time travel based science fiction series (if you don’t mind German with subtitles). Acting is great, easy to get emotionally invested in the characters.

I could not agree more. The plot is the crux of the issue, not the technological quality of the special effects.

The original Twilight Zone episodes were not all winners; in particular, the ones which attempted humor I think fell flat. But the best of them were among the most superb television ever, with the power (then and now) not only to entertain but to make viewers really think.....

+1, The music for The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) could not be improved, in my opinion!

Also Forbidden Planet (1956) as someone upthread also mentioned. The monster on Forbidden Planet gave me the willies as a kid!

I would also like to mention The Time Machine 1960), Journey to the Center of the Earth (1959), 2001: A Space Odyssey (1968), and Planet of the Apes (1968), all of which I saw on the big screen upon their initial release. And back then the big screen was really a big screen!

I also liked The Martian Chronicles (1980) a TV mini-series.

Since most of the one's I'd recommend (old and new) have been listed.
This one is on my list and hasn't been mentioned: Metropolis (1927).

I wasn't too keen on the colorized version or the black and white TV Version (missing parts). there's a remastered/restored version with ALL the parts - it's cleaned up and even though it's obviously not a "modern made" movie it's good. See if you catch the special effects (you probably are use to seeing them in modern films that they won't seem all that amazing... until you remember it's 1927.) " There can be no understanding between the hand and the brain unless the heart acts as mediator. "

And then there's the silliness from the 60's - Planet of the Apes and Barbarella!
and my personal favorite cheezy sci fi movie: A Boy and His Dog - with Don Johnson (swoon!) from the 1975. (just read about it no need to see it.)
In the 80's Road Warrior - no, Mel Gibson, stopped my 18 year old heart and then sent it fluttering.

5. Arrival (very under-appreciated, IMO)

I'll throw another one out there. I hesitate because it's so bizarre, but it definitely keeps my attention. It's one of those that can be interpreted a bunch of different ways - the cult classic Donnie Darko. There's a book in the movie that you can find online and read to get a better explanation of what the movie is about. They don't go into the contents of the book very much in the movie.

No votes for Star Trek and no votes for Star Wars either. So that's a tie for those genres.

Both Star Trek and Star Wars were just ho-hum for me. Great special effects and that’s about it, the stories carried little feeling or interest.

No votes for Dark Star? LOL, campy but fun. Same with Earth Girls Are Easy.

For artistic merit, I'd say Bladerunner and Bladerunner 2049, and Alien. And THX1138 - I love the symbolism of being in a prison with no walls, trapped only by your fears and assumptions. Seems appropriate for Bogleheads / retirement! And the start of another work week.

For fun, I'd say The Fifth Element ("muuuullllteeeee pass"), Galaxy Quest, and District 9.

Of course, like everyone else, my answers are limited by what I've actually seen.

Fahrenheit 451 (1966)
My wife loves Soylent Green (1973), me, not so much. This film is set in NYC in the year 2022! We’ll see if it comes to pass!

But perhaps these are “dystopian future” movies, not SF.

I have seen "2001: A Space Odyssey" over 30 times, including 3 times in Cinerama. It's the gold standard. If it's incomprehensible to you, you should read the novel version (written after the movie) or Arthur C. Clarke's "Childhood's End," a book upon which 2001 is based.

That said, this miniseries of "Childhood's End" is AMAZING and a must-see:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4146128/

I highly recommend this adaptation of Ursula Le Guin's "Lathe of Heaven":
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0081036/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0

And also highly recommend Brit Marling in "Another Earth:"
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1549572/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

For fun: "This is the End:
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1245492/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1

Finally, guilty pleasure: "Omega Man," based on "I Am Legend."

I would argue that Star Wars is not science fiction. There’s more magic (the force) than science. Star Wars is more akin to Harry Potter than it is to Star Trek.

Agree with Bladerunner - Original and the new one.
No one has mentioned Terminator.

For TV shows, Continuum was excellent, involving time travel back to the current time with excellent social commentary.

The Time Machine - 1960 version

The 5th Element - 1997
The Fly - 1958 version (Vincent Price)
Blade Runner - both versions

The Andromeda Strain
Avatar
Back To The Future (any/all of the three)
Bicentennial Man
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Blade Runner (the original)
(another vote for) The Day The Earth Stood Still (the original, not really into the Keanu Reeves remake)
Fantastic Voyage (1966)
Stargate: Continuum
WALL-E (yes, I know it's more cartoon than science fiction, but I still enjoy it highly)

... and since nobody else has thrown it in, I'll be brave and cast a vote for "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension".

I agree with so many of those mentioned by everyone!
I'll throw in "Fantastic Planet":
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fantastic_Planet
Saw in 1974-ish in the movie theater.
And for tv, "The Outer Limits". Many episodes but favoring the alien episodes! Here's one based on "that Scottish play":

The Fifth Element
The Andromeda Strain
Galaxy Quest
Blade Runner (original)
Interstellar

I wish someone would make a movie of:
-The Mote in God's Eye
- Citizen of the Galaxy
- The Honor Harrington series (just the first one at least!)
and too many more to mention.
The destination matters.
