Modem and Router (C4000XG vs Asus RT-AC68U)

Hey Everybody,

I just switched over to Centurylink from Comcast and got a C4000XG (modem and router) in one.

Thoughts on using it for my router or should I use my previous router Asus RT-AC68U with dd-wrt which has been a solid router for me.

I signed up for the gigabit service and got the C4000XG for free. They said I could switch down to 100mbps in the future and still keep the C4000XG

You need some sort of modem so you probably need the C4000XG. That said, I see poor reviews for its wifi router function. The again, I don't trust every negative review of wireless routers so I would take that with a grain of salt.

Since you have both anyway it can't hurt to experiment! Perhaps you can plug your Asus WAN into one of the C4000XG's gigabit wired ports and turn off the C400XG's wireless radios.

What tier of service did you get with Centurylink? I don't know specifically about their offerings, but I'm willing to bet the RTAC68U won't be able to keep up with anything much faster than 200Mbps.

If you're paying a monthly charge to "rent" the device, then I'd recommend going out and buying a new, modern, good-quality modem and wifi router (separate devices), setting them up, then returning the rental.

If you got it for free, then I guess there's no harm in using it if its performance meets your needs. Keep an eye on sales and deals for a replacement modem a new router though. I've found that the cheapies the cable company gives me tend to fail after a couple of years.

How much space do you need to cover with WiFi? That’s normally where cable modem / WiFi router combos fall apart and multiple APs or mesh come into play.

I ran both the CL router and my old ASUS router (2.4 & 5) for an experiment when I got CL Fiber. Using my cell phone and walking the house, the ASUS router provided full bars everywhere, CL 5 faded fast, 2.4 was there but medium strength. Ended up turning off the CL radios and using the ASUS router. YMMV

Im a big fan of the ASUS, used one for years. You already have it and know it’s performance. If you have to pay for the new one, then go with the ASUS. If not, you might test the speeds where you use your devices before switching.

If you are paying a monthly fee to rent that thing, ditch it and buy a modem yourself. Arris Surfboards have worked really well for me. You'll recoup your savings w in a year most likely. Keep your old router or get a new one at that point.

3200 SF lot, house is 2 stories (1K SF per floor)

Unless your wifi needs are very modest, I would ditch both and install a proper mesh system with Ethernet backhaul if at all possible.

Update... The C4000XG has wifi issues so I am getting a different hardware from them
