can I shorten a pdf file?

Post by mouses » Thu Jun 04, 2020 8:27 am

When I get a paper owners manual, I discard the pages in a foreign language and just save the English. I would like to do the same with the pdf copy, but I can't figure out how to do it.

Editing is grayed out. I thought of print to file for the subset of pages might give me some way, but print to file has always hung on my system. I am not desperate enough to scan in the English portion. I am just hoping for some easy way. Thanks.

You cannot change a pdf file as is. You can export (probably file -->export) it to whatever word processing software you use, edit out everything you don't want, and save that as a pdf or word or whatever document.

Do you have a Mac? Open the PDF in preview and in the thumbnail pane you can select and delete any page(s) and save.

On a Windows system, install CutePDF (free). It uses the print driver to create a new PDF. Because it uses the print driver you can choose the page numbers to print, including non-continuous ranges (i.e. print pages 1-5, 8-13, 17, 23-25) into a single PDF.

Preview on Mac (part of standard install). PlotSoft PDFill Free PDF Tools on Windows. May also need to install GhostScript if you don't already have it in order to use the latter (also free).

https://download.cnet.com/PDFill-Free-P ... 35051.html

It has many other functions like merge and rotate which you may also find useful.

If you have a program capable of editing PDFs (like NitroPDF) you can remove pages, assuming that the file has not been secured by the creator of the PDF.

I have the full Adobe Acrobat program (i.e., not just the reader version) and I can extract or delete specific pages easily.

You could also "print" specific pages to a different PDF, if you have a program that allows that, like the aforementioned CutePDF. If you have Windows 10, "Microsoft Print To PDF" can work, after you add it as a printer.

What app (or application) are you using to view the PDF?

Adobe Reader (free) is a PDF viewer. Acrobat Pro DC (not-free) allows much greater control of what you can do with a PDF, including deleting pages, editing pages, etc.

As others have posted, there are many applications that handle PDFs, with various feature sets.

Just print the pages you want to a new PDF.

You don't need to install anything really. Just print the pdf and instead of selecting your printer, select "Save as PDF". Make sure to also select the pages you want to "print" (save) and you'll have your pared down pdf.

In Safari on iPad or iPhone:
Select Print from the upload icon on upper right of title bar.
Select page range that you want to keep.
Pinch to zoom in on any page.
Click upload icon and select Save to Files.
Choose folder and name to save the new PDF on your iCloud Drive.
Click Done and Cancel to go back to the original page.

On Linux, pdftk is a good option, although it doesn't support encrypted pdfs. It also lets you rotate single pages and re-collate pdfs into "book" type orders, great for fixing up scanned documents.

Note that many PDFs are produced lazily, by scanning the document. Such PDFs can't be edited or shortened, except by removing pages (with a PDF editor program). You can't export the text unless real text was used to produce the PDF.

Some corporations deliberately scan PDFs like this so they can't be Searched or modified by (say ... ) unhappy customers or shareholders, or used for fraudulent purposes as easily.

As others have pointed out you can save as a new PDF. In Windows you can do this in one of two ways, without installing special PDF software: either print to Windows 10's own PDF driver, or using Chrome's Save as PDF option. You mentioned that something isn't working, so maybe try the other method.

I have used the CutePDF trick in the past, but sometimes it results in a larger file (in terms of disk space) than the original. Annoying.

I realize it's no longer true, but part of my brain still believes that disk space is a scarce resource......

you should put your platform (windows or Mac) in your first post. Each has its own solution.

Preview on the Mac is an incredible program, absolutely incredible. You can do it all there.

It s##ks that windows is so clunky in this regard.

What program are you using to open the PDF? If you are using Edge (might be the default with Win10 now) you can download Acrobat Reader and use that to open it instead - or use some other App you already have. In general - if what you are using freezes - use a different Application to open the PDF (there a countless Apps that can open - Chrome can as well and you can print to PDF from there).

Another vote for the above.

The problem with freeware applications is that they sometimes come with unwanted spyware-esque components. They won't freeze your computer and ask for ransom or anything, but do you really want somebody monitoring your web surfing to help serve up ads?

Sometimes this is done to fray the costs of developing the application.

Sometimes this is not done by the application developer, but by the websites that hosts installer programs (cnet/ sourceforge) unbeknownst to the company that developed the application.

Most of the time the install process will have a checkbox that will allow you to opt out of the additional "capability". Sometimes the option is intentionally placed in an area that you can easily miss. And sometimes the dang thing gets installed anyway despite your opting out.

In addition to all the print to PDF options list, Ghostscript can extract pages from a non-protected PDF. You can also use Ghostscript to stitch together multiple PDF files. I do this so often with the command-line version of Ghostscript for Windows that I have two scripts to set all the options for me: gs_extract and gs_merge.

Ghostscript is fairly widely used in the open-source world (it has both GPL and commercial variants), so there is not as big of a concern about malware. Here's the Wikipedia article on it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ghostscript

You can just print the selected pages to a pdf file. You need to download a program to do that in earlier Windows but it is a built-in feature in Windows 10.

Sorry. Didn't see that. I use it all the time myself so I don't understand why it would freeze. The only thing I can think of is if the number of pages is too high. Does it give the same result if you print just one page?

What application and what OS are you using? Without this information we're all guessing and probably making wrong assumptions in efforts to help you.

Numerous options are already presented: print to PDF, pdftk, ...

(If your "Print to PDF" hung then there is something else is wrong on your system.)

But I would question the purpose of this exercise. Is it to save a few kilobytes of data? It seems that the effort far out-weight the benefit.

Check out Blue Beam Revu. I use it for work and it does everything you can ever ask of a PDF editor. Not sure if it’s free or not though since it’s pre installed on my work computer.
