Better to rent through Airbnb or VRBO?

Post by Kennedy » Fri May 22, 2020 2:10 pm

I'm interested in a short-term vacation rental. I see the same unit listed on both Airbnb and VRBO.com/ The listing on Airbnb is for around $15 more than VRBO.

Is there a reason I should use Airbnb instead of VRBO, which would save me the $15? I don't know if one is more customer service friendly, etc. than the other?

I would search around online for some promo codes, that might save a lot more than $15. Also check cash back portals.

Either one is fine. I have had similar experience on both platforms.

Look for your place on both of the sites, as some of the fees may be cheaper on one compared to the other.

Ive used both and been happy with both. I will say that I had 3 reservations on AirBnB in April that we’re canceled and they were excellent about cancelling and returning my deposits

I've used them both also, but pre-COVID era. They were both fine. Just make sure you are factoring in the entire cost when comparing. There are a lot of fees and such tacked on.

This is what I heard about AirBnB. I will consider renting from them in the future.

I will never, ever rent from VRBO again, and that’s after years and years of multiple rentals. Their handling of covid cancellations this spring was horrible. Very little communication, impossible to get ahold of, promises made that were not kept. Hands down the worst customer service I have ever experienced.

It’s been almost 3 years since I’ve compared, but back then I think VRBO was less involved in the transaction and was basically just a marketplace. AirBnB kind of explicitly stood as the guarantor of the whole transaction

NO IDEA IF THIS IS STILL TRUE

We had the same experience -- a vacation rental that was available on both Airbnb and VRBO. The price and fees were about the same. However, the cancellation policy was much better through Airbnb, so we booked through that site. Not sure if these policies have changed since COVID-19.

Check "Flipkey" as well. We just rented a place and for some unknown reason flipkey was less expensive by $100. And the COVID cancel policy was very reasonable.

I've had both good and lousy experiences with both. It depends on the individual property and owner/renter.
The disadvantage of both is if the unit is a bad experience and you want to leave mid rental. You can't just leave and be paid to date such as if you were staying at a resort or hotel, etc.

Based on recent bad experience with VRBO not compelling owners to offer refunds for trips cancelled due to Covid, I would go with AirBnB.
