Glue for lucite plastic to metal

Post by Caduceus » Sat May 02, 2020 10:12 pm

I have a lamp whose pieces have fallen out. The plastic pieces are lucite diamonds that are supposed to fit onto the edges of a metal frame, a little like this lamp: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Lucite ... 4615962615?

What type of glue would work to glue the diamond pieces back into the frame? Are there any reversible glues out there for plastic-to-metal applications? The original makers used a glue that was very gentle, because when the pieces fell out, the underlying bronze frame was in pristine condition - the glue hadn't harmed or corroded it.

2 part epoxies, that you must mix, will usually work on plastic with metal.

I second the clear silicone. Also, clear Gorilla Glue. In any event, be sure to use an adhesive that is somewhat flexible, as acrylic plastic (Lucite) expands four times as much as bronze with temperature changes. Unless there's some "give", the bond will likely fail in time.

I use this website for anything glue related: http://thistothat.com/

It's specialized to help you find the proper glue based on the materials you have.

I would consider using a hot glue gun. It shouldn't impact the materials, wouldn't require precise mating of the pieces, and should be fairly easy to clean off if needed. It's not super strong, but the application doesn't seem like it would need that.

E6000 has the strength+flexibility you need for this project. It’s available at Craft stores and Walmart. Put petroleum jelly on the threads after you use the glue.
All conservators agree repairs should all be able to be removed later. This can be scrapped away if you need to pry apart later.
Good luck.
